My favorite hawaiian song. She always gives me smile & reminds me when I was on the Island. I live in France, so far away from Hawaii but Hawaii is still in my heart.

Was traveling on business to Oahu once/year back in the 90's and heard one of their tunes playing on the radio quite a bit. Picked up this CD of theirs and loved it. Bought them all after that. You can't go wrong with any of them. I like their versions of most of the covers more than the originals.

I went to a Buddhist wedding in Sacramento. When this song started playing, I kind of looked down, and sang the first few notes a couple of beats too early. This song is a favorite, and I can get pretty close to the same pitch. I'm sure it was just the song, but there were a lot of older Japanese guests who liked it, and they started clinking their glasses for the bride and groom. Also, my mom grew up in Waianae. She left years ago, but I know she still has good feelings about the place, and her neighbors. Some are still there, raising pigs and growing food.I was thinking that the guitar on this cut sounds like surf guitar, but more country. Without the big rolls of some of the music from the 60's, but still all there ... seeming a little more easy. I don't want to sound too familiar, but keep playing uncles.

From HSB 6/21/02: Kamakahi, a longtime student in the related disciplines of researching and documenting Hawaiian music, cautions fans of the song not to read too much kaona (concealed meaning) into the lyrics. For instance, he did not write it about any of his "fair-skinned" Molokai cousins or about any other woman in particular. In truth, he says, the lyrics compare the way the white mist parts after a rain to reveal the top of the mountain, to how a woman reveals herself to her lover.

Last year when my wife and I visited Kauai, we took the boat ride up the Wailua River to Fern Grotto and they have hula dancers and play live music by request. When this Haole raised his hand for the first request, I'm sure they were expecting me to ask for Tuny Bubbles or Somewhere Over the Rainbow. Nope, it was this song. They were surprised I knew it, and probably relieved a bit..until the very next request came in for Somewhere Over the Rainbow.
