KA Bar has maintained their brand. You have to understand 80 years ago it was a Fantastic knife. There was zero comparison out there. Today another story. Don’t beat the old KA bar up. It does what it was meant to do kill, trench, open cans etc.

Yeah kind of like the WWII spec 1911 pistols, they were amazing for their time but eventually have become outclassed on essentially every metric including cost. The only real reason to get one now is for the aesthetic or historic appreciation. A $35 Cold Steel SRK is superior to the Ka-Bar in every possible way.

I mean no disrespect because I know many people love the k-bar, I do too but I've always thought of it as half a knife half some sort of lever tool. Two things you get a very steep angle of sabre grind so if you put a double bevel you're getting a very thick angle edge and then the point is entirely geared for strength. I mean it's perfect for a soldier who's mostly using it to open tin cans and crates but both the tip and edge are very uncutty. As I'm writing this I'm wondering maybe if that is actually better, the salt has got a more of a delicate tip and edge. That would normally be my preference because I like sharper knives. I mean I think of the key bar is being indestructible because it is where is the sog that tip is waiting to be broken off but on the other hand it's a more potent knife particularly if you're dressing game. Maybe I need both.

The biggest functional difference is the tip design. Because of the pointier tip on the SOG, it's a fighting knife first, and a utility knife second. The Ka-Bar however is really a utility knife, first and foremost, that could be used for fighting. It does have a cross guard, but if you test how each one penetrates, I believe the SOG will have a massive advantage. As far as which steel is better, I think people underappreciate stainless steels. The biggest problem with the carbon steel is keeping the fine edge from rusting and losing its sharpness, which can happen VERY quickly, if you need your knife to be very sharp.

I have a KaBar USN Mark 1 knife with leather stacked handles that does what I need a knife to do. The SOG was the better made knife, what the future holds is an unknown. Unfortunately, both knives have a top guard which serves no purpose for me, it is much easier to remove that on the KaBar (not necessary on my Mark 1). Quality is the measure of value for me, not manufacturing location. At $140 the SOG had the greater value, at $200+ not so much. I have no problem with 1095CV steel, I believe AUS8 is similar to 440C which is not a great stainless steel. But, blade geometry and heat treat are more important than steel type. A true comparison of knives is in how they cut and slice.

Ka-Bar's steel is NOT 1095, that's jsut marketing. They use the good old "Carbon V" or else "50100b". It's not a simple steel as 1095, that's why Ka-Bars have better edge stability, than 1095 blade knives. It takes a bit more time to sharpen, but still very easy being a carbon steel. It's the steel that made Cold Steel famous back in the day! Good stuff! as for the "1095 CV" that's just marketing bsht because people are more familiar to 1095 since it's a decent inexpensive steel that is used very often, especialy in the USA,so people are more familiar with it and thus more wiling to buy the knife.

50100B is Sharon Steel. Based on 1095. It's other aliases are 1095 Cro van, 1095CV, Sharon Steel -0170-6, and several other different names. Ka-Bar uses 1095 Cro Van. Bark River at one time used 50-110B. Kabar DOES in fact use 1095 CroVan. This information is easily researchable.
