This temple was built by Maharaja Lalitadit Muktapid in the 7th-8th century so that thousands of generations to come can see the splendor of this ancient and glorious temple.
Dedicated to the Sun God, this temple was established in the 8th century by the Karkota dynasty king Lalitaditya Muktipida. King Lalitaditya was the most successful and famous king of Kashmir. Who raised the flag of his kingdom from Tibet to Dwarka, from the sea coast of Orissa to the south, Bengal in the east, Vidisha in the west and Central Asia. The threat of his army had reached Iran. This brave king had conquered Peking i.e. even present China. At that time, Maharaja Lalitaditya was one of the most powerful emperors in the world.
Maharaja Lalitaditya had built many temples during his rule in Kashmir.
There are 84 pillars in the Martand Sun Temple complex, which are placed at regular intervals. The temple is constructed with the help of square bricks of limestone.
The exquisite architecture of this temple makes it one of the most beautiful temples not only in India but in the world. Situated amidst the snow-capped mountains all around, this famous religious place gives a breathtaking view of the Kashmir Valley. On the eastern side of this temple is the mandapa of the main entrance.
इस मंदिर का निर्माण महाराजा ललितादित मुक्तापिड़ ने 7वीं 8 वीं शताब्दी में करवाया था ताकि आने वाली हजारों पीढ़ियां इस प्राचीन और गौरवशाली मन्दिर का वैभव देख सकें
सूर्य देव को समर्पित इस मंदिर की स्थापना 8 वीं शताब्दी में कारकोटा राजवंश राजा ललितादित्य मुक्तिपीड ने की थी। राजा ललितादित्य कश्मीर के सबसे सफल और प्रसिद्ध राजा थें। जिन्होंने तिब्बत से लेकर द्वारिका तक, उड़ीसा के सागर तट से दक्षिण तक, पूर्व में बंगाल, पश्चिम में विदिशा और मध्य एशिया तक अपने राज्य का परचम फहराया था। उसकी सेना की धमक ईरान तक जा पहुंची थी। इस वीर राजा ने पीकिंग यानि वर्तमान चीन तक को जीत लिया था। उस समय महाराजा ललितादित्य दुनिया के सबसे शक्तिशाली सम्राटों में से एक थे
कश्मीर में अपने शासन के दौरान महाराजा ललितादित्य ने अनेकों मंदिरो का निर्माण करवाया था
मार्तण्ड सूर्य मंदिर परिसर में 84 स्तंभ हैं, जो नियमित अंतराल पर रखे हुए है। मंदिर का निर्माण चूने के पत्थर की चौकोर ईंटों की मदद से किया गया है।
इस मंदिर की बेहतरीन वास्तुकला इसे सिर्फ भारत का ही नहीं बल्कि विश्व के सबसे खूबसूरत मंदिरों में से एक बनाती है। चारों ओर बर्फ से ढके पहाड़ों के बीच स्थित इस प्रसिद्द धार्मिक स्थल से कश्मीर घाटी का मनमोहक नजारा देखने को मिलता है। इस मंदिर के पूर्वी किनारे पर मुख्य प्रवेश द्वार का मंडप है।
