I still have, and use, my fifty-four year old "Ka-BAR". It is marked "U.S. CAMILLUS N.Y." on the blade, and has a chrome looking finish on all the metal parts. I was in the Air Force in 1970, and purchased this knife prior to leaving for Viet Nam. It was with me throughout my 23 year career, and is now a permanent part of my camping gear. That sucker takes and maintains an edge better than any other knife I've used over the years.

I have one like that but I found it stuck in a tree just off a trail. I was never sure what year it was from. Month later I scouted around a bit and found the sheath. (yay!) ~ The sheath has 9 staples vs 9 rivets. Is your sheath stapled or riveted? I'm not sure the sheath era really matches the knife era.

I have 2 KABARs, one I ordered directly from KABAR and the other was issued to me in 1973 by the USAF. It's a Model 1209, sometimes called a PX Knife. The USAF was issuing them to us as a tool for our travel bags. Basically a utility knife.

in 2003 i saw an article in Leatherneck magazine, they were talkin about the OKC. I wanted to buy one, but wouldnt until i graduated bootcamp. when i graduated bootcamp it was the first major purchase i had ever made. i kept it home until i got to the fleet. after my first leave i brought it with me to my unit. i kept it locked away. eventually my unit had purchased the OKC's for all the marines. those were kept in the armory we never really used them, but every field op we had to draw them out. We went on one field training exercise that lasted 2 weeks. well unfortunately, out of the entire company, 2 were lost in the field. after returning from the field the CO said we all had to back out to Verona Loop and police call the entire AO, and we were not allowed to leave until they were recovered. this was also going to affect liberty call as well. so in order for the BS to stop i had to give up my knife. the other was purchased at the PX. we had to put on a show and we stayed out there for 4 hours. the knives were "all accounted for" and we were able to go on liberty. however liberty was still delayed because the CO still had a chip on his shoulder.

Really cool to see them all together side by side Wolf. Great video. You definitely know your stuff. I only have three but they're all pretty sweet. I've customized one of their next generations with ODG cerakote, and I've got an 'original' Ka-Bar that was a boot camp graduation gift from a friend that I've used and abused. The last one is a NOS Vietnam issue in a NOS brown leather WW2 sheath for my MAC-V-SOG/Green Beret collection in mint condition with no oxidization.

My old K Bar is Parkerized , it “had “ a false swedge , but it didn’t take but a few minutes to get a razor edge on it , mine certainly isn’t pristine like your kb it was used pretty heavy for years , but for a circa 1970 knife , it’s still in decent shape , and that 1095 steel takes a razor edge…

Survival Knife = Army. Historically, the Army knife's thicker blades were made to open ammo crates in the past wars.

Great video love the history and all the good information as well. I actually like those OKC3S ones they look pretty sweet. At least the marines still get issued some sort of knife/ bayonet. The army used to issue a bayonet to soldiers but stopped issuing or doing and bayonet training many years ago around 2010. All us Army guys bought and carried are own personal knives of are choice my last deployment to Iraq I carried 2 K-bar folder knives which I still have and love.

the OKC3S is pretty stinking sweet! I dont have to much experience with serrated edges. Love the Ontario SP6. Mine is the older stamped 1095. They switched to 1075 steel so maybe you did get a bad heat treatment. The newer 1075 blades have the markings lazer etched instead of stamped. Joe X shows how the SP6 takes abuse. The one reason I like it is it's a stabbing blade design and is exactly like the OKC bayonet shape designed to penetrate. One knife you need ro add to that collection is the Buck 650 Nighthawk. Talk about an indestructible blade. The fact that our stupid military decided to not do the contract is beyond me. 1/4" of 420HC and a stabbing design like the SP6/OKC Bayonet. You can find destruction tests on it that are impressive! And, from my research, and according to Larrin's toughness chart, 420HC is some of the toughest steel around!

Gotta say, My Ontario is finished very well. Absolutely nothing like the one in the video. Not well ground, but 30 minutes on the bench, and it is now shaving sharp. I've had it three years and do a lot of batoming. No issues whatsoever. Construction is identical to the "K-BAR" with the 5/8th" tang running the length of the handle, stepping down to 9/16" shoulder for the pommel slot, which is pinned. This does not have a rat tail tang. That's something completely different. I sanded off the black paint, revealing beautiful stacked leather, which got a generous saturation of Obenauf's. No. I don't hammer it into a tree and use it to step up to my Bug Out Tree House. But as a sturdy camp tool, it's as good as any and will baton through 4" hardwood like a splitting moll. The Ontario SP-2 is just as good - maybe better because it has a solid rubber grip and a 5" blade, which many find more practical.

Gus...i was watching a video yesterday on a Ka bar knife. And these two guys decided i test the knife. So the first thing they did is nail the knife into a tree trunk. In doing so the knife at its guard failed and was bent. Than they proceeded to try to remove the knife by batoning the handle. The handle broke off and the blade was left in the tree. I find it really ridiculous the testing of this particular knife on how its abused. You really should again post a video truely explaingbthe role thatvthis knife has had in its history. This knife its an excellent field knife coupled with a tomahawk and a saw. Sure it ain't an esee 5...but it wasnt designed to be that knife. People are comparing apples to oranges. I dont know about you but i would carry a Ka-bar anywhere along with the understanding that i wouldnt slam my knife into a tree...call it a day and than explain why it was done and to justify it with some upsurd comment. These guys thought that they were metalergists!! They take away from its history. Its a great knife; its a warriors knife; its an American knife; its a outdoors knife; it's a camp knife; its a bikers knife and a gangsters knife two. Fuck OJ used this knife...he had too!!! I see knives on some ofvthese channels that have never been used. You gotta guy out of Alaska who loves his Pacific Chris Reeves knife. This dude has never used his knife. But he loves talking about his Chris Reeves knife. He thinks to that to live in Alaska you need a C.R. knife.

I have the Ontario version. It is an exact copy of the "kabar" requisition requirement. Good, solid knife, although I have greatly modified the edge angle and I've ground the clip point to a straight line that strengthens the tip. On the tang thing: These do not have a rat tail tang. Those are tangs that taper to a thickness less than what they start at. All requisition USMC designs have a straight tang of 9/16" all the way thru the handle that shoulders down square to 1/2" at the pommel cap, which is cross pinned. Continous spiking will ecventually loosen the pommel cap and can loosen the cross guard as well. A simple punch and hammer will quickly solve the problem. Thus, if they have a weak spot, it is at the point where the blade transitions into the grip, which can be broken under extreme stress. It is not easy to do but some do it just to "prove" the knife is crap.

Funny bit of history, when the military wanted a new fighting knife several companies answered the call with their designs. Onterio won but in true US fashion, the DOD awarded the contract to kabar BUT to produce onterios design. Thats right, the iconic kabar was designed by OKC

I had a ka-bar my parents got me when I graduated from boot camp, but somebody stole it when I was deployed for Desert Storm. Recently I bought the Case version. It's my understanding that it's based on the model Case submitted during WWII, but didn't get a government contract.

strongly recommend you keep your videos short, but informative . . . like a full video summed up in 10 mins . . . the broken knife is a result of oxidation that's hard to detect . . . oxidation happens if the blade absorbs moisture during shaping of the molten hot steel into a knife . . . it's a rare phenomena but they do happen . . . any form of oxidation in a blade cannot be easily detected, except if & when put under a electron microscope . . .

I can verify that 1095CroVan (small percentages of chromium, vanadium, and a few other elements) is harder to sharpen that straight 1075 to 1085 carbon steel. I tried to get my Ka-Bar brand Ka-Bar back to hair shaving sharp, on my Work Sharp Ken Onion. I couldn't do it. Admittedly, I was rushing, and I'm a novice when it comes to knife sharpening. I think I wasn't using the correct angle, or the correct grit to sharpen my Ka-Bar. Regardless, it's still harder to sharpen. And from my experience, if you buy one with the Kydex sheath, it comes hair shaving sharp, but dulls quickly, even without use. Just taking it out and putting it back in the sheath dulled the blade. That's fairly common for polymer spring-retention sheaths.

It varies per manufacturer and can change from decade to decade. Sheaths are often lost and easily replaced with numerous manufacturers stamping “Ka bar” on the side and some not. It would be hard to identify a knife based off of a sheath alone, but it’s not impossible.

Was alittle shocked that during the comparing of the mark 2 combat knives that there was no mention of the fact that both the ka bar & case knives are made for the commercial/civilian market. While the Ontario knife is a U.S. Military contract knife made to Gov. Spec's. That explains the more refined finish on case & Ka Bar knives compared to the True Military Ontario.

Don’t leave them in the sheath. If you do, spay they with olive oil and wrap them in plastic wrap. When ever you are storing your blades always cost them with oil and separate them from the leather as it draws moisture. As far as removing just use steel wool. Don’t worry about scratching it because you can polish with a dremel or grinder wheel with the proper attachments. Some people polish with a strop and stropping compound as well.

I'm not sure why there was confusion, but a higher chromium content would make a knife more corrosion resistant, not less corrosion resistant. It also makes it harder to sharpen. Chrome is a very hard element. On some of the swords that were found with the Terracotta Warriors in china, they found that some of these swords Stihl razor sharp. The reason, they eventually figured out that they were coated with hard chrome. Something that we didn't develop until about the 1930s and it was originally developed so that you could put it on internally reciprocating engine parts so that they could run even without oil at times. My gunsmith happened to take a firearm he built for shooting in the Camp Perry matches, and he sold it to me after his son passed away. And yes, it is still the most accurate government model, on the planet, bar none. And documented so. He hard chromed it because I was going to use it as everyday carry gun with a couple of modifications, he also made sure that I kept the original parts he had built the firearm with. The reason he did that was because I would spray dry Teflon on it and leave it the hell alone I would not oil that firearm in any way shape or form because oil draws dirt and dirt causes issues with reliability.

what is the most use of knife in modern warfare?
@gustifer0311
@gustifer0311 Жыл бұрын
Field utility. Opening boxes, etc. warfare has been increasingly longer distance especially the last 30 years. The infantry will always be in need of a short range close combat weapon, but only a very, very small percentage will be afforded the opportunity to use in such situations. Was some bayonet usage recorded during the battle of Falluja also known as operation phantom fury in 2004.

@@mikeyob4271 I don’t have experience on that battlefield, so I can’t testify to that. If munitions are cut short for the Russians, like they were in the beginning, I would say that that might likely be an option. However, I think most men would rather surrender first . it seems their drafted fighters have very little will to fight, and bayonet fighting is something that takes a lot of will.

@@gustifer0311 SSgt. David Bellavia, US Army, earned the Medal of Honor for actions during the 2nd Battle of Fallujah in 2004. In his book he talks about engaging in hand to hand combat with an insurgent and using his Gerber combat knife to introduce him to his 72 virgins. I later read that he was carrying a Gerber Applegate combat folder. (Interestingly, I carried that same blade in Iraq in 2006-07, along with a few others). Yeah knives aren’t used regularly for combat, but it happens. I regularly transported enemy prisoners on helicopters, and given the close proximity, we carried condition 4. Also, nobody wanted to start putting rounds downrange inside a helicopter at 3000 feet. During those operations, your blade was your primary weapon if it got bad. Semper Fi🇺🇸

These are not “rat tail.” The are concealed tang, and though some are not very good, in terms of strength, or taking care to radius the tang where the guard site they are not so narrow as to take a threaded pommel Rat tail is where the gang goes from ricasso width to very narrow right below the guard. The tang on the kbars is rediced width, but under the handle it should not be so narrow as it appears in the pommel
