It's funny how a lot of people think that the 1970's was a better time, including myself, but when I watch these old news stories, people were nuts back then too.

For real. Hearst & the SLA, Watergate, Jonestown, Hillside Strangler, Son of Sam, the oil crises, Iran hostage situation, Kent State, and more. Super crazy.

In NZ we had our Jimmy Savile -Bert Potter - who I saw once as a kid at the local swimming baths with his hippy dip ship wives, Mr Asia Gang who killed a schoolmate with their heroin, Crewe Murders, Carless days, Presentless Christmas about the same time. Plus the level of car and bike accident deaths was v.high proportionately.

I literally laughed out load at 00:43 when the _Eyewitness News Team_ all came into opening shot at once. Absolutely hilarious - the reporters were not on the scene, they were all in the studio congregating! Now I know for sure the skits re-created in the movie 'The Groove Tube' were dead accurate! Also a sign of good journalism as seen by the disclaimer stated at 04:47 , try seeing that nowadays!

On the contrary, Tubeie, we were ALL (except for the anchors) on the scene! By the time we did THIS show we were extremely grateful to have come back from that story alive! Our team was filled with real, professional, dedicated broadcast journalists who re-defined local television news because we WERE involved in the stories we reported. It took me 3 days and a quantity of valium to recover enough from that experience to return to work!

Larry Carroll I am sorry you read my comment as a serious statement. It was a comment about the objective observation of it as sent up in a movie of the same era. I work in the industry and I would not, for one moment, question the dedication of these people to do a great job in the light of the story at hand. Again, it was meant as a content on the scene in the studio, not a comment on the staff themselves.

This is how the Eyewitness News began. I remember this from a small child. I guess it was just their theme to start the news with the news reporters walking onto the set each time the news began. Also, as a child I always thought Larry Carroll was a cool looking guy, the only problem was that he always had bad news. LOL!

That story about the Torrance crash -- I actually pass by that intersection (Hawthorne and via Valmonte) every day going to work. The area that the crash occurred is now a Truxton's American Bistro restaurant in the Hillside village professional and shopping center, as far as I could tell from the footage. And, yes, Newton/Hawthorne is still a more heavily-trafficked intersection just a block to the north, as it's a shortcut for people cutting across to the Pacific Coast Highway.

7.35: The cops refused to allow the fire brigade to put the fire out for at least a full hour? I had to rewatch that -:I thought I must have misheard but it got worse. The cops were captured on film screaming abuse at the firemen who were brave enough to ignore them and were trying to put the fire out. I'm no fan of terrorists but that was just barbaric - and yeah, I know they claimed the SLA were still firing but that would have been highly unlikely by the time the house was engulfed in flames (they were hiding in the Crawlspace under the house - it was almost definitely the sounds of unfired ammunition exploding towards the end).

This is incredible, dramatic historical news footage. It is from May 17th, 1974, in the middle of the Symbionese Liberation Army kidnapping furor with Patty Hearst, heiress to the Hearst/San Francisco Examiner newspaper/magazine publishing fortune. Patty Hearst survived this as she was in a different location (apparently watching this very coverage, or from one of the other stations), and was later involved in a bank robbery in Sacramento in which a bank customer was killed. Patty Hearst was convicted of bank robbery and served nearly a couple of years behind bars. Jimmy Carter commuted her sentence and Bill Clinton pardoned her. She ended up marrying one of the cops who was protecting her when she was briefly out on bail, starting a family and living a relatively quiet life to this day. The SLA was a domestic terrorist group led by highly radicalized left-wing activists. Six members of the SLA died in the fire dramatically shown in this footage. Rick, I don't know if people from Northern California have sent you tapes similar to what you have from Los Angeles, but if so it would be nice if you somehow also found news coverage from KGO Channel 7 in San Francisco (the sister station to KABC), where Patty Hearst is from and where the SLA was based. KGO was the highest-rated news station in the Bay Area for years, especially in the 70s. This was a HUGE, HUGE story in the Bay Area and I do recall it from my childhood. I'm not from LA but Southern California people can attest to the legend of Bob Banfield, Chuck Henry (still on the air to this day I believe), Christine Lund and the others at Channel 7.

Michael Sheldon Reed Christine Lund lives in Alaska and owns a small gift shop. Unfortunately Doctor George Fishbeck, who was the weatherman died a few years ago. I believe some of the others are still on the air, but I now live in Northern California and don't get down to Southern California too often.
