When the count bonks Westley on the head with the sword, he accidentally actually hit him with the hilt and knocked Carey Elwes out. He had to go to the hospital and had a concussion. Carey wrote a great behind-the-scenes book called As You Wish that is EXCELLENT reading.

@@Laura-mi3nv Cute to mention Flash Gordon, that was silly but terribly fun :) I wonder if you have seen The Commitments. I put it close to P Bride in that it is Fantastic, but not well known and very under-appreciated. The special part of it is that much of the cast are musicians- not actors- because the movie is about young folks trying to put a band together in Dublin; but it has as much "natural comedy" as anything. The writing and slang is fun to listen to and the very young lead singer is *Amazing*. If you like music at all, it is a Must. I bought the soundtrack in 1992 after I first saw it. 🔥❤

This is one of the few perfect movies. Think about it. This movie knows exactly what it is, and the director, (Rob Reiner) got his story across seamlessly. It doesn't take itself serious, the roles are perfectly cast, and the actors deliver their parts flawlessly. Not to forget the great dialogue with immortal lines like, "Inconceivable", "As you wish" and "Hello, My name is Inigo Montoya....". Perfection in every category. This is why it is such a cult classic.

This movie gave Andre’ one of his few joys during a very hard part in his life. It came out at the same time Andre’ had turned Heel (bad guy) in wrestling for his feud with Hulk Hogan. Because of his commitment to the story Andre’ couldnt be nice to his fans, so he spent alot of time alone on the road. The director gave him a special cut of this movie on VHS on the promise he wouldnt show it to anyone who was not a fellow wrestler. Andre spent night after night in his hotel room on the road, watching this movie with his bagman Tim White, or Fellow Wrestlers like Many Poffo. When the movie finally came out, Andre was again able to respond positively to his fans (of the movie)

I was introduced to the WWF by my friends. A good friend invited me to his house to watch Wrestalmania 2 and watch awesome entertainment! Then, I saw the Goonies music video and it stared Andre the Giant. I always thought he was a baby-face.

A one-of-a-kind movie that couldnt be remade ... because the chemistry between the cast was perfect and it is going to be -impossible- INCONCEIVABLE to find another giant that could do as well as Andre did.

They did a version of it for charity. It was during the pandemic so the actors all got scenes and they had to do their own costumes and props and filmed it wherever they were. Then they were edited together. It's on KZbin. I was going to just watch a bit of it but ended up watching the whole thing...then watched it again with my husband. The love for this movie! There were a ton of A listers who agreed to do it. Huge Jackson, Pedro Pascal, Jack Black, Common to name just a few. It's hysterical and well worth seeking out if you love this movie.

About 2/3 of my extended family can quote this film, nearly front to back. The book is amazing, btw and Rob Reiner did a fantastic job putting it to film with William Goldman (the author) and screenwriter. The film is very true to the book, and having read the book only enriches the film. For my son's 30th birthday, we rented a small theater a few towns from here and did a private showing of TPB. My blonde-haired great-niece dressed as Princess Buttercup and her brother and cousin dressed as Dread Pirate Roberts and Inigo Montoya and when the great sword fight scene came on, they jumped up on stage and acted it out. My nephew-in-law wore a glove with six fingers. We had themed treat bags and we all shouted out the lines (except for the wife of one of my nephews who just didn't get the whole cult film thing. She was offended when people shouted out the lines, saying she'd never seen the movie and wanted to hear. We all ignored her.) Best of all, we managed to truly make it a surprise and he loved it. Considers it one of his great memories. Oh and TPB fans are Brideys. :)

@@pamelahofman1785 It was loads of fun, and really, not that expensive. The little theater was in transition, for sale but bravely hanging on for one show a week. So all told we spent just about $500. I'd purchased a few rare posters and the owner put them up in the glass cases in the lobby, and then we rolled them up for my son to take home. He had them framed and now he's got them hanging in his man-cave. :)

Billy Crystal was so taken with Andre that he and writing partner wrote a script for a movie the two could star in together called "My Giant". Unfortunately, Andre passed away before they could make the movie together.

If you're up to it, check out the making of this movie. They say that when the princess got cold on set, Andre would put his hand on her head and it covered almost her whole face, like a really warm hat. Very sweet

When I finally got to meet Carey Elwes at a Comacon in Oklahoma City I had to remind myself not to yell, "As you wish!" He really is a nice guy. My friend and I got a selfie with him and talked for about 10 minutes. We are from Ponca City he remembered it from filming Twister. The cast stayed at a B and B there.

The film is actually based on a novel by William Goldman who was an Oscar-winning screenwriter as well as a novelist. The "S. Morgenstern" part is a literary flourish that Goldman used to put off people. The novel as the subtitle says, "The Good Parts Version", is played off as Goldman did an editing job to make S. Morgenstern's work more accessible to a modern audience. The novel itself was conceived after Goldman when a young father asked his two small daughters what kind of story they wanted for bedtime. One said that she wanted a story about a princess, and the other one asked for the story of a bride. He wrote the novel and it was a modest success. It was a fairy tale that was told much like adventure novels of the past like 'The Prisoner of Zenda', 'The Scarlett Pimpernel', and others. It was written between his two biggest successes as a screenwriter. His first Oscar was for the film 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid' (1969) starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford. His second Oscar was for another Redford film where he was teamed with Dustin Hoffman as the famous Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein in 'All The President's Men' (1976) and their coverage of Watergate and the Nixon White House. Both films are amazing! Goldman also did screenplays for (among many): - Chaplin - A biopic starring Robert Downey, Jr. as Charlie Chaplin...RDJ got an Oscar nomination for his performance, which is astounding to see. - Maverick - Starring Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster, and James Garner, based on the 1960s TV Western, directed by Richard Donner. FUN movie!!! - Misery, Hearts In Atlantis, and Dreamcatcher - all adaptations of Stephen King novels...Misery has an Oscar-winning performance by Kathy Bates and is also directed by Rob Reiner. My favorite quote about Hollywood and movie-making was coined by Goldman in his book 'Adventures In The Screen Trade'. The quote: "Nobody knows anything!" Truer words were never spoken! Cary Elwes (Westley) wrote a great book about the making of the film called 'As You Wish'.

Actually, I looked them up on Wikipedia several months ago. The Florin was a small gold coin from Florence (hence the name). "Guilder" was how the English referred to small gold foreign coins; it is believed that they specifically meant the Florin. And the names of the two countries involved tells you everything you need to know about the countries and the proposed war - they share the same currency, just under different names, which means they share an economy and probably a culture; and money is Prince Humperdinck's real motivation for starting a war.

I happened across this movie when it debuted on HBO in 1987 or so, having barely heard of it in theaters. I was instantly hooked. There are so many fun facts behind this movie, but my favorite is that for the swordfight scene, the script literally calls for “the greatest sword fight in modern times," word for word. And two actors studied hard and provided it. Which reminds me: every effect in this movie is a practical one, as in, CGI - actual objects in real life.

Several years ago, I heard a news story about a fan of this movie who was kicked off a commercial airline flight. He was wearing a shirt that had all of the "prepare to die" line written on it. Other passengers tried to explain what the shirt meant, but to no avail. I think the ejected passenger was only temporarily detained, and I would imagine he was advised to reconsider his choice of clothing when flying.

The sword fighting scenes were choreographed by Robert Anderson who worked on Lord of the Rings

Andre the Giant was 7'4". Regrettably, he died 30 years ago. He was not in good health even during the filming of this movie; his back had him in constant pain. In the scene where he was climbing the Cliffs of Insanity, the cliff face was some kind of fabric painted (or manufactured) to look like rock, and it had two slits in it for the tines of a giant fork lift which served to actually lift all of them up the cliff. In the scene where Buttercup jumps out of the window into Fezzik's arms he had his back attached to a board which actually took the weight. He is remembered fondly by all of his costars from this movie, as a kind and loving man. Robin Wright says that when they were filming the shipboard scene, where she was wet from jumping in the ocean, she got very cold and between takes Andre would put his huge hand on her head to warm her up.

Arnold Schwarzenegger has a story about talking to Andre the Giant in his kitchen once. Andre picked Arnold up like a child and sat him on top of the refrigerator, so they could talk eye to eye. Arnold said his leverage and strength were just ridiculous, that he really was naturally giant-strong. For all of his body building and weight lifting strength, Arnold said there was just no contest as to who was stronger.

He was very strong in certain ways, but I read that he was not allowed to do the stunt of actually catching Robin Wright in her jump from the castle window because of danger to his back.

At the time of shooting TPB Andre was dying and he knew it. At the time he'd just had back surgery caused by having so much weight to carry around. The doctors had diagnosed him with acromegaly and told him that it was only a matter of time before his heart gave out.

@Will Cool Actually no, they never diagnosed him in France. And by the time he had been diagnosed it was to late to do anything. Paul Donald Wight II (AKA The Big Show) also had Acromegaly but was able to get his pituitary gland removed to stop his growth hormones. But yea, he'd already accepted that he'd die young at that point. According to Vince Mcman his friends were more upset than he was at the news of his impending death.

YOU SEE it's Westley chasing the 3 kidnappers; whoever is hearing the story read to them (or any reader of the book) is left in the dark about who The Man in Black is: the movie shows all but the book keeps the reader's/listener's imagination working. Never heard of swamp gas? It's the source of the spouts of flame in the Fire Swamp. BBQ ROUS! Pass me the catsup, please! The story is so beloved because even an adult can revert to their childhood and enjoy having a tale recited to them, their imagination let loose to roam with the story. Good job, Sir!

The priest is of course Peter Cook, the famous British comic. He used to work alongside Dudley Moore. One of the funniest movies I've ever seen is the 'Hound of The Baskervilles' with the pair doing what they do best. By way, Cary Elwes is a British actor too.

I loved Butter Cups royal garb. Especially the wedding dress and crown. Miracle Max/Billy Crystal has been in many movies and also a repeat Oscar host. Grandpa/Peter Falk also famous TV show Lieutenant in the popular 70s show Columbo. The grandson is Fred Savage very popular too in the show the Wonder Years.

I was in a media store when this lady said she had 12 girls coming for her daughter's 11th birthday sleepover and was trying to find a suitable movie, I recommended this movie and then others around were saying it was a good choice. I have seen kids and adults love this movie. I have it on DVD so that I can watch it when I want.

Who wouldn't enjoy it? One of the best movies ever created... stands the test of time... still a beautiful tale... and so much fun. A bit campy ... slightly silly... but swords, danger, eels, a princess... True Love... what more could you want?

Mandy Patinkin (Inigo) lost his father to cancer before the filming of this movie, and there's a lovely interview where he recalls how the fight with Count Rugen felt like it was *his* revenge as much as Inigo's, like in that moment he was avenging his own father as well.

I love how they snuck in a "go f*ck yourself". when the guy from the brute squad confronted Inigo and shouted out "Ho there!", and many people think that Inigo responded "keep your ho there", but that's not what he said, he said "Keep your joder" which is Spanish for "to *ck" and by telling him to keep it, he was telling him to go f*ck himself.

I hear what you're saying about no A-listers. Now they may not be considered as such, but when this movie was made, there were so many A-listed actors. Robin Wright was relatively new at this time. Carey Elwes still makes movies now & has his own fan base that began with this movie.

I wouldn't say that any of them were stars at the time it was made. That's part of its appeal, that it was cast for suitability rather than bankability. Robin Wright had appeared in a small role in only one previous film, and Cary Elwes had done only a couple and certainly wasn't a well known name. Probably Christopher Guest and Billy Crystal (and Andre the Giant, to his fans) were the best known, in part from their past work with director Rob Reiner, and they had a following, but they certainly weren't at the top of any A-list of box office draws. Mandy Patinkin was still near the start of his distinguished career, a major figure on the stage and later on TV, but never quite in the movies. Probably at the time, the best known actors to US viewers were the boy and grandpa in the "frame" story, Fred Savage and Peter Falk, because of their popular TV series.

Kabir, since you don't see anyone of importance in this cast, it must be that a very popular cop show didn't make it across the pond, starred in by the grandfather in this movie. That would be Peter Falk, who played Columbo. Also, Miracle Max was played by Billy Crystal of a goofy, but very popular, show called Saturday Night Live from back in that era. You asked how that "spontaneous fire" started. Remember that they were in the Fire Swamp at the time. In the duel with the 6-fingered man, even in his weakened state, Inigo was able to hold off the slashes of the sword. Andre the Giant was 7 ft. 4 in./224 cm. tall. One scene you didn't mention, which I personally thought was hilarious was the (apparently) high class wedding (high volume organ music, etc.), only to be presided over by a priest with a terrible speech impediment: "Mawwiage! What is wuv?" 😂 I found myself wiping away tears of laughter the first time I saw that, and still do.

To this day you will often find clips of the surviving members of the cast talking about their experience filming this, EXCEPT you don’t hear alot from Fred Savage (or before he passed Peter Falk). I suddenly wonder what it was like for them to be a part of such an iconic movie, but to have a completely different experience filming it. Outside of their lines , how much were they aware of the rest of the project at the time of recording. Sometimes movies ADD a narrator when a movie fails a test market due to the audience being unable. Imagine a version of this movie without a narrator, or just a more neutral narrator

Sumthin almost no one notes: The musical score is overly simplified to sound basically like video game music (of the time), because we're watching this through Fred Savage's eyes. So it's like the baseball game he's playing at the start.

A movie doesn't need to have current-day A-list actors to be fantastic. Most fantastic movies don't. They have excellent character actors and a cast able to inhabit its roles. The cast of this movie were and are name actors in movies, television, and theatre.

I will watch this film anytime it comes on T.V. Probably seen it at least 200 times. The characters are wonderful. The story is enchanting. There's nothing not to like. Stop trying to figure it out. Just watch it, and enjoy. It's a modern day fairytale.

Fun fact: it took Andre the Giant 119 beers in six hours to get close to drunk. And Robin Wright was the Amazon General in Wonder Woman. This was such a great cast and movie. I never get tired of watching it. I really enjoyed how you were in the same head space as the kid (Fred Savage) in the movie, but that by the end you were just as invested and enjoying. Also Billy Crystal played the role of Miracle Max. According to accounts when he was acting on set the actors where darn near dying of laughter.

TPB has an A list star, it's just that people tend to not recognize him or forget about him being in the movie. Magic Max is played by Billy Crystal who starred in quite a few big hit movies in the 90's.
