When I worked as a Veterinary Technician at a Zoo , I had a "pet" cougar , that was definitely part of the breeding/release program. She wasn't released , but all her babies were shipped to Florida to be released in their natural environment. My cougar "Bianca" was too heavily imprinted on people to ever be released , however she was a fantastic mother to her babies.

Deer, coyotes, and big (well fed) racoons and opossums and squirrels everywhere. . The population of nene geese when into sleep decline due to a bright idea with very bad consequences. There was a large population of rats that grew on the sugar plantations. They introduced the mongoose to kill the rats. However, one was active in the day, while the other active at night, so they lived on opposite shifts so to speak. The mongeese ate the nene goose eggs instead of the rats triggering near speceal extinction. Once they got downtown about 16 breeding pairs there was a public-private effort to protect the nene goose. Through legislation and conservation efforts it is slowly getting their numbers back up.

You'll notice a lot of the endangered species have small, very specialized native ranges. Wide-spead species are doing fine for the most part. The "Florida panther" is no longer considered a valid subspecies of Puma concolor. The current thinking is there are only two subspecies in all of the Americas; one found from southern Mexico north, and another from there south. Hence, the "panther" is the same taxon as the cats still wide-spread in the West. In fact, some years ago biologists decided it would be OK to release a number of female Texas lions in Florida to counter a severe inbreeding situation.

With population surveys I used to be a wildlife biology student so I don't know all of the techniques but do have some understanding of the practice. Basically what they do is they go to the area the creature in question lives trap, temporarily mark, and then release the individuals. A little while later. Before the marks fade fall off etcetera. They set traps again in the same area then they count the marked vs unmarked individuals giving them a present of marked vs unmarked population and from there basic math allows you to estimate the overall population density
@jeffburdick8693 жыл бұрын
4:40 They estimate species numbers by catching them and tagging them, then releasing them. Say they catch and tag 1000 of a particular animal completely at random. Then the following year, they catch another 1000 completely at random. Of the 1000 they catch in the 2nd year, 200 are tagged. They can do the maths and estimate that since 20% of the ones they caught the second year are tagged, there are 5000 total.

In my fenced yard (about 7,000 sq feet), I have had hawks, squirrels, crows, finches, many, many lizards, raccoons, possums, so very many spiders, mockingbirds, hummers, doves, many butterflies and on and on. I adore my hummers, and plant specifically to attract them; some are so tiny they appear to be large bees. We also have many many (possibly too many, they are killing pets like crazy) coyotes in town and the surrounding urban areas. Within 15 miles in the foothills and canyons we have mountain lions, bobcats, rattlers, bears. We frequently have news of black bears in swimming pools near the foothills every summer. The black bear population in the USA is very large, perhaps 300,000.

I volunteered for a long time with a group called Wolf Haven. They were participants in captive breeding programs to bring up wolf populations. They focused on the red wolf for a long time, and luckily they have a decent-size wildlife area for them in the Southeast US. Wolf Haven later turned its focus to breeding the Mexican wolf, which comes from the southwest and of course through Northern Mexico, but unfortunately that program is a little more iffy, because the only land in the US at least where they can be released is a minuscule area in the vicinity of the Navajo and Hopi reservations. If the poor animals stray out of this invisible line they can't see, they're usually shot. Circa when I'd stopped volunteering at that place (which granted was quite a few years back), there was only room for about two packs in there, and they were still in negotiations with the Mexican government to see if they could reintroduce the wolf to Northern Mexico as well. I should look into that and see how that's going. I know they stopped breeding them in the interim, possibly because they had nowhere to put them. Which is really sad.

The Florida panther or cougar population was down to approximately 40 individuals in the 1980s. A lot of the problem was inbreeding bcuz the cats didn't have free range of the state bcuz of roads cutting them off from the rest of the state. They captured quite a few and found they had the same DNA. So they put tunnels under the roads and their population rose to the 140 to 160 individuals they are now. The low numbers of animals on the Hawaiian Islands and California Islands are due to the size of the Islands. The Islands can only support so many particular species before they start to die off. It's a simple fact that if there are not enough prey species the predators die off until they can support themselves. Does that make sense?

This list is a bit odd because there's no natural barrier keeping animals like coyotes, bald eagles and armadillos from crossing between the US, Canada and/or Mexico. So for US-only species, you've either got to single out endangered local populations or critters that live in an area that's somehow isolated. I'm surprised how many of those I've seen. I get Allan's hummingbirds, although Anna's are more common. Search for a video of the Gunnison Grouse mating dance (no, really) or sage grouse. They have these weird air horn pouches that go BLOOP. Also, the Channel Island foxes off the coast of California are SO cute and so tiny! I caught a glimpse of one on Catalina Island. I wish I had a time machine, though, there were- I kid you not- pygmy mammoths there until 12,000 years ago, about the size of cows.

Not real happy with this List 25 video. They focused altogether too much on California, Hawaii, and the southwest. The midwest (the Great Plains) as well as Texas have a vast diversity of unique species. For example, Texas has the javelina (ha-ve-leena) Spanish for javelin. They're small wild pigs that are ferociously aggressive, and fast, hence the name javelina. Definitely unique.

Wasn't midway the first naval battle where neither sides ships were in visible contact?

@@hengineerthat’s basically every fleet carrier battle ever and to this day only a small escort carrier got sunk by naval artillery because those little carriers couldn’t out run the bigger ships

Turtle/ tortoise lifespan depends on the species. There are certain species that live up to 100 or more years. Researchers do periodic counts of wildlife, study migration and food availability as well as climate changes.

A bird that eats other birds doesn't make it a cannibal. If it ate its own species, yes. For example, even though you might consider it unpalatable, there are some monkeys that are eaten by people around the world, and gorillas and orangutans have at times also been hunted. Unless you can prove that primates other than humans are your uncle Bob and cousin Helga, cannibalism only applies if we eat other humans.

I'm not sure the prairie dog was mentioned but they get hit by cars a lot and it's sad.

That was a poor example of the Florida panther. They are much bigger than the picture and are quite regal in bearing. Something on the NICE KITTY KITTY scale. I worked for the State of Florida and at the time it was the screen saver on the computer.

My problem with "endangered species" is that they are all in small area,. that may or may not have a lager population of said unique to a zone creature.

This is cool !! We've got like 8 or maybe 9 out of these here in central/southern Florida !! The red salamander I've never seen, but ive seen black ones here ALL the time !! Of course it's also the dangerous ones that are here though lol !! The Florida Panther and Alligator lol ( I'm guessing he meant alligator, cause crocodiles are found like in Africa south America australia etc... )!! ... Definitely not trying to walk up on them !! But I did have to get my 66 year old dad to teach me how to fish an alligator out of my pond like 2 years ago !! Lol !! He grew up here catching alligators ( which is INSANE ) But one was in my pond in my yard and I have puppies and a 12 year old, so I called him... long story short... you tie multiple HEAVY fishing lines together to a tree and put chicken in a cooler and leave it in the sun for like a week and put it on a BIG treble hook afterward... and pretty soon after... you got you a Gator !! Lol !!

There are American Crocodiles in FL. Mainly in the Miami area. Not only that but I was hoping he said alligator since that picture was clearly a gator and not a croc.
