Love your passion for the American Muscle Car. I grew up in the 70s/80s and went to High School with guys who lived and breathed muscle cars and music. I wasn't lucky enough to have one, but rode in many a friends muscle cars jamming to classic rock tunes. These guys would work jobs after school just to afford the gas and insurance, but it was the focus and passion of a young American male's existence back in the day. Taking them to drive in theaters, cruising mainstreet, a trip to the mall, and dates was all the rage.

I bought a 69 Charger 440, 4 speed in 1985. I rebuilt it over 10 years while still driving it. And now i'm 59 and the car is 55 and it's a gem. At least when i pass away one son gets the house the other the car.

I learned to drive in a 68 Charger & a 71 Dodge Dart Swinger both with 318 engines. No big blocks, but they were fun. Didn't realize till later what I got to learn in, and that was the late 80s

Dodge Dart and Plymouth Valiant were essentially the same car, but different badges. I had a 75 Dart with the 318 and it was a pretty snappy little car that go from whoa to go in a real hurry

@@TonyM1961 Back in the '80s, I won a lot of street races in a '71 Plymouth Scamp -- basically a Plymouth-badged Dodge Dart -- with a 318. The secret of its success was light weight, a mere 3,050 pounds. On a roll, it could go from 30 - 70 in the length of a city bus. The 1-2 shift dusted most opponents. It defeated everything from a Formula 400 Trans Am to a Nissan 300ZX Turbo. Never faced real big-block '60s musclecars, but its one nemesis, the cars it never beat, were 350 Novas. Same light weight but a more powerful engine, and almost always non-stock. They showed me their taillights so fast I could barely register it. ;D

@@steved1387, I learned to drive in a 74 chevy nova. My mom's car I was saposed to get when I got my licence. Loved that car, yellow with black vynl top and black pinstripes, even a fun hatchback you couldn't tell😂! But her and my dad got in a barfight, got kicked out and came home playing demolition derby in front of the house till neighbors called the cops!😢 No car for me. My grandpa ended up getting me a 65 chevy impala. At first I thought it was a big boat. But damn that car had kick❤❤! My brothers raced it a little, and everyone loved and wanted my car. Lol Best car i ever had. It was in great shape cus it was garage kept and not driven. He bought it from his neighbor for $150.00 in 1986! ❤❤ wish I never got rid of it, cus in never broke down other than little stuff!

They're not as terrible on fuel as everyone thinks. With an 8 speed transmission a 68 charger with a 5.7l hemi can get over 30 mpg. With something like the ecodiesel v6 and said 8 speed transmission, you can EASILY get over 50 mpg with no issues and still have CRAZY power. Diesel is the future of muscle cars. And with today's modern technology, you can absolutely make these cars kick ass on the circuits. And remember, all of these top speeds were reached with 3 and 4 speed transmissions. That whole 6 speed thing was a lie, ford never made a 6 speed til MUCH later, no manufacturer did to my knowledge.

I Had a 1970 Cougar Eliminator 351 identical to the orange one in this video, an original orange paint, near mint, 4 speed California car I bought for $5000 in 1999. At the same time I had and still have a1970 Buick GS 455 Stage 1 with Stage 2 T/A aluminum heads and headers. At the time, I bought the Cougar with a cash advance on a credit card. The best use of a credit card I ever did! The kids in the neighborhood would stare down at the Cougar as I drove by. Have a 2015 Challenger Scat Pack 392, always loved Mopars, but could never get one back then.

I grew up in the muscle car era. When looking at the muscle cars you have to remember that 1971, in most folks opinion, was the last muscle car year. After that the government pollution controls that auto manufacturers were forced to install on engines caused the lowering of compression ratios reducing the horsepower possible. If you pay attention you'll notice that after 1971 the cubic inch displacement of engines increased in order to produce the same horsepower that lower displacements could achieve before. It just wasn't the same any more. I always felt Chevy had to come out with the 454 because their great 427 wasn't the same after they hobbled it. The favorite one I owned was a 68 Firebird with a 400 cid engine. It was the most exciting muscle car I ever owned. It was built to be a very quick car from the factory naturally asperated. Most people alive now don't know what it's like to have an engine that can be used for braking as well as acceleration except maybe some diesel owners.

In this group of muscle cars, the cougar eliminator is my favorite. There were so many muscle cars and all of them had their unique appeal and style. The heavy hitters also cost the most but the true in the know speed enthusiasts would order the basic model where you could option the strongest motor or special order to get beyond normal engine availability some those were the COPO (central office production order Camaro's ) got you a 427 cubic inch v8, "68 Hurst Oldsmobile Cutlass got you a 455 cubic inch v8, Pontiac T-37 got you their 455 H.O. (high-output) v8. In Detroit if you had the right connections you could get some really "unique " cars built. Ford and Chrysler had their "flexible" build sheets too. Then there were people doing special modifications on top of stock components Mr. Norm's Dodge, Don Yenko for Chevrolet, Royal Pontiac "bobcat's" , Baldwin Motion Chevrolet's, Carrol Shelby for Ford .It was a incredible time for the auto industry.

I took my drivers test in a 70’s Camaro. It cornered like a dream but I had to do a 3 point turn without power steering. Kinda rough but I passed. You should watch the 60’s movie Bullit with Steve McQueen. He drove a green Mustang and bad guys drove a black Charger. There’s a great chase in the movie and it takes place in San Francisco - it’s a great chase and a very good movie.

James Bond got to drive a few American cars. George Lazenby drove "Mrs. Bond's" 1969 Mercury Cougar XR7 in On Her Majesty's Secret Service. And Sean Connery got to drive a 1971 Ford Mustang Mach 1 in Diamond's Are Forever. Like you said...a lot of these had similar body styles, especially the cars that fell under the same banner like GM (Chevy, Pontiac, Oldsmobile). There were plenty of Americans drooling over the sophisticated styling of Aston Martins and Jaguars....

My friend from across the pond, I grew up with these cars & they were sturdy & easy to work on, you could practically rebuild the engines without pulling them out. Our government started putting restrictions on them because of the oil crisis, then the designs just got weird & boxy then smaller & smaller. I still turn my head whenever I see an oldy.

My favorite corvettes were the C2 body type, 1963 thru 1967. Beautiful cars without compare. Fiberglass gave them a weight advantage. 1963 the C2 corvette came with a split rear window and a 327 cubic inch V8 which conservatively produced 360 horsepower. By 1964 the C2 lost it's split rear window, and got a 1 piece wrap around (truth be told, the fastback styled window was large, but the angle left you with little to see). The Corvette of 1965 started getting big block engines in 1965, withe the 396 cubic inch / 425 horse power. If you knew how to deal with the codes handd down by the techs a Chevy, you could get some very interesting engine and transmission combos, as well as final drive choices, although it was hard to pick the brain of your local dealer and Chevy themselves didn't advertise those options well. Another interesting fact, is that the Corvette wasn't a large car. It was a mid sized car compared to the Chevrolet family car lineup of the day. But as a further oddity, when Chevrolet took the corvette C2 racing, they built 7/8th's versions of the C2 in order to scrub even more weight and gain further advantages. If you buy a period and race spec. Corvette from Superformance, you are getting that 7/8th's build, which is great for the driver, but 6 foot plus individuals may find the passenger area a little cramped.

It's criminal how the 1970 Oldsmobile 442 W-30 and the 1970 Buick GSX stage 1 are not mentioned in any of these "top 10 muscle car" videos I've seen. A stock 1970 Buick GSX stage 1 could pull the front wheels off the ground. The '70 GSX stage 2 built by Buick for their race team could pull a wheelie past the 60' marker, and dominated all other manufacturer teams throughout the late 60's and early 70's in the 1/4 mile, even the drag race teams Ford, Dodge, Plymouth, and their GM cousins, like the Chevelle SS. The 442 and GSX were often called "the executives muscle car" or "the bankers muscle car" because of their price tags and high-end options packages.
