You just witnessed one of the most dangerous things of winter. Black ice is what it's named for. The ice on the road is so clear on the roads and sidewalks that it's a bigger menace than it looks. Not to the level of blizzards but it's dangerous.

Black Ice is very different than a pinch of snow packed down, it's a whole new world. Especially for Brits who think their weather can be bad. Black Ice....there is NO warning, just a bit of caution and common sense, and that only works out some of the time.

Yeah, the only way you can find out if there's black ice is to go real slow, and tap the brakes to see how much you slide. If you're slow enough, you'll be ok when your car merrily continues onward. Maybe. Turning onto a highway is such *fun* with black ice. 😱

Strong winds can and do pick up cars and trucks and throw them around like toys. One tornado picked up a pickup truck and placed high in a tree over a mile away from where it originally was. Both people in the truck were killed.

On the last one, the key to driving through that standing water is never letting up on the gas, at all. As soon as you let up on the gas the exhaust pipe will suck up the water. Just floor it and go through. If you need to keep one foot on the brake to slow down but never stop with the gas pedal. An old man in Louisiana taught me that about 20 years ago. Rainy season brings flooding often and I've done it many times in the last 20 years. I'm not sure if try it in a small car with no height to it however. Of course if there's water flowing over the road as part of a stream or river never cross it.

When puddles and wet roads freeze, the black ice is invisible. It is also common for days after a snow or hard freeze because the snow melts during the day making more puddles and re-freezes at night when the temp drops back below freezing. It is hard to see because there is no frost on top and you are already upon it before you realized it was there.

"They've been planning their escape for years..." - I nearly died. The cars going every which way with people chasing them? They were sliding on ice-covered snow, some most probably not being driven. Seen it on local newscasts when we get an ice storm, accompanied by snow or not. About half of the cars slaloming around in clips like that are usually empty. Some of the others are idiots with 4-wheel drive who think that helps in ice. The minivan clip was impressive, because it was theoretically sheltered by the van it was parked next to! But nooo, the wind dived over, under, or around and scooped up the minivan. 😮

I guess it's not reality weather, but the craziest thing I've experienced was huge flakes of ash landing on all the cars driving the highway during rush hour. It was pretty scary because that meant that the wildfire was close. And you're kind of stuck on the highway, with it just raining down.

Oh man, seeing all those cars slide down the hill in the snow. I used to live in the mountains in Oregon and it was on a pretty steep hill. People who lived on the hill knew how to navigate it but I remember watching this BMW who was clearly new to the area try and try and try to get it up it, but just kept sliding back down. Eventually parked at the bottom lol. Just glad they never hit anything.

The scariest weather I have ever been in is Tule fog. Being on a highway in one of the interior valleys in Northern California, the visibility can drop to maybe ten yards, with the traffic still driving 50 mph or so. It would not make for good video, though.

I flooded a car engine one time (sucked water in). All you have to do is remove the plugs, turn it over a couple times, put the plugs back, start it up, drive away. Change oil. Don't stand toward the plug holes when turning it over. The engine will force water out of the cylinders really hard. (As a buddy of mine learned with a column of oily water shooting up his nose and eyes)

Black ice causes tons of accidents because you can never see it coming. You don't know until you start sliding. Definitely scary. We've had way more high winds lately than usual. The weather has been wild. I haven't seen any mini vans flying through the air tho. 🥺

Half of these look like PDX this winter when we got unexpected snow this year. It took me 3 hours to get home because so many cars crashed into each other. I was lucky that I didn't have to leave my car on the road, but many people just abandoned their cars just so they could get home.

It was a bit funny hearing you describing walking through a heavy wind in October or November & having to push against the wind to keep moving being a key memory for you. That’s pretty much mid-October to March or April in the part of Canada that I live in.

I remember once when I lived in South Dakota, I was standing up near my tv when lightning struck the transformer right outside my window. It knocked me backwards and blew out my tv. It also ruptured my eardrum.

I had some crazy wind like that too, but it was at a beach house on a large lake(horizon as far as the eye can see). The wind was so strong coming from the water that it was knocking me over and I weighed 210lbs. But I had fun standing and sitting in the sand during it. It felt like I was going to be picked up and carried away at times.

Driving in the snow is fine, as long as you have the proper tires and experience. Anything other than that combination and it's kind of a crap shoot.
