4:27 - Actually, we used to do that "hold onto vehicles" thing quite a bit back then. Was it dangerous? Yeah. Did we care? Nope. Did the driver stop and yell at us? Most of the time, no. But you have to remember, also, this was the era where we would ride in cars without seatbelts, or in the back of a pickup truck with nothing holding us down, we didn't wear helmets while riding bikes, no padding when skateboarding.... it's a miracle we all survived. Hell, if we got hurt, we got Mecurochome and a band aid put on the injury and were told to "walk it off". You could have a bone hanging out and the parental units didn't want to take you to the hospital. I'm not joking! Now you need to complete the trilogy.

So true! No cell phones back then. My parents really didn’t worry much cause that was normal back then. I wouldn’t come home till dinner time. I walked or biked all over my town with friends. Riding and hanging out the back of my fathers truck was so much fun. He allowed too. Lol! No helicopter parents back then.

The 80s were wild. When I lived in Florida we would get golf umbrellas and skateboards. During the early portions of the hurricane, the wind was just right for Brella-boarding. Not a single person was wearing a helmet or any type of shinguards etc.

Watching people watch these movies today is really fun, but amusing, too. The Helicopter-bubbled generation always seem very incredulous about how Free-range kids lived back then. It's a trip to see. haha. Still, I'm sad things changed so much. It's really unfair and unfortunate

Around the time he was filming Doc Hollywood in 1990, Michael J Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. He soldiered on for just over another 10 years, but, since then, he's taken it easy, opting to spend time with his family and fight for a cure to the disease. He's only made sporadic performances since, the most notable (in terms of time) probably being The Michael J Fox Show, a sitcom in which his character also has Parkinson's. You have to see the rest of the trilogy, and an amazing film showing him in another light is Casualties of War, with a terrifying Sean Penn.

Fun Fact: When Marty first goes to the mall in the beginning when he skates up to the sign it says "Twin Pines Mall" with the time on the sign when he goes by it at the end of the movie to try to save Doc it says "Lone Pine Mall" with the Time. That is because when he went back in the beginning to old man Peabody's farm he ran over one of the pine trees.

🎶 "That's The Power Of Love!" 🎶 Fun Fact: The judge who stands up to say that Marty is "just too darn loud" is Huey Lewis, whose songs "The Power Of Love" and "Back In Time" are featured in this movie. Cinematic Chemistry Fact: When Lorraine follows Marty back to Doc's house, she and Doc exchange an awkward greeting. This marks the only on-screen dialogue that Christopher Lloyd and Lea Thompson ever have, though they have appeared together in six movies. Automobile Enthusiast Fact: Writers Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis actually received a fan letter from John DeLorean after the film's release, thanking them for immortalizing his car.

The funny thing is that we’re farther from 1985 now than 1985 was from 1955. It’s funny the way the movie looks back with nostalgia at the earlier time, and we look the same way at the movie’s “present.”
@LA_HA
@LA_HA 2 жыл бұрын
Kylopod: There's another connection between the 1980s and the 1950s. Generally, it's thought that every current generation is like their grandparents' generation, though to varying degrees, of course. This was true about Gen X. Gen X reflected The Greatest Generation (their grandparents) in many ways, including their attitudes about sex and the desire for societal simplicity. This was because of both generations' exposure to war and the hardship during the fear of war. GG actually participated in WWII and Korea, while Gen X lived under the shadow of cold and nuclear wars. Sexually, GG saw the start of what would lead to the sexual revolution of the 60s and 70s. Gen X reverted back to the cautionary attitude of premarital sex due to AIDS, the beginning of the rise in teenage pregnancies, STDs, and single motherhood. Like the GG, Gen X was labeled as indifferent "slackers" even though they couldn't wait to enter what they saw as the freedom and independence of adulthood. They both worked hard, but for Gen X, the good times were behind them with two recessions were in front of them; rather than a recession behind them and an economic boom in front of them. The two generations were the last to be raised by the generation of their parents before a major shift was to take place in the family and society. It's a little more complex than that, but in a simplistic way, this is why he didn't see that much of a difference between the people and what was going on in the movie's time periods. haha

In fact it is a movie you need amazing actors for. They shot almost the whole film with Eric Stoltz as Marty and it didn't work. They fired him and got Michael J. Fox - who was their original choice, but unavailable due to his contract with his television show. They ended up getting him by having him shoot nights and weekends, so Fox was filming all day and night and getting very little sleep, which makes this performance all the more iconic. How wild it must have been for the other actors to film most of their scenes a second time with a different actor.
@nicoletrudell2065
@nicoletrudell2065 2 жыл бұрын
Also the recast of Marty meant the recast of Jennifer, too, as the original actress, Melora Hardin, was too much taller than Michael J. Fox for the producers' liking. A bad break for her for sure, but probably not career changing as Jennifer was recast in the second film anyway, and Melora eventually ended up on The Office (US version).

FUN FACT: if you look through the front doors of the school at 4:40 (when Marty is arriving at school at the beginning of the movie) you can actually see that it is clearly nighttime outside and not the beginning of a school day! This is because Michael J Fox was still filming a season of the show family ties at the same time and was literally filming both Projects 24 hours a day at that point!

Twofer Bonus Facts: At the Twin Pines Mall, Doc Brown tells Marty that it used to belong to Old Man Peabody (whose son's name is Sherman - an homage to the old Peabody & Sherman cartoons) who was breeding pine trees. As he flees from Peabody's farm (and Peabody blows away his own mailbox), Marty runs over one of the twin pines. When he returns to the mall at the end, it's the Lone Pine Mall.

Hey K. Since the theme of "messing around with time" intriges you, you should also react to the movie "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure" (an American comedy set in the 1980-90s era of southern California during the popular fad of "surfer lingo"). I think you'd really enjoy it.. 😄 Another consideration, the movie "Clue" (a comedy based on the old murder-mystery board game that was popular in the US back in the day..) Fun fact: the gym used as the high school gym is actually a gym of a church in Hollywood. This weekend actually, there's an event at rhe Hollywood United Methodist Church where they will have the gym made up as the Under the Sea dance as it was in the movie and there'll be a DeLorian in the Church's court yard for people to take pictures with it. I watched another channel a few days ago , German In Venice where he got footage of the preparations for the event this weekend. Fun Fact #2 , the prediction of the Boston Red Sox winning the World Series that was made in the movie actually happened in 2004 after over a a century since 1903. There used to be a Back to the Future ride at boyh Universal Studios parks ( Hollywood amd Orlando due to the fact that the Production company that produced the movie, Amblen Entertainment is Steven Spielberg's company , and Amblen is a subsidiary of Universal Pictures) for well over 20 years but I believe the Wizarding World of Harry Potter Ride may have taken BTTF's place a few years ago. Most of the movie was filmed on the backlot of Universal Studios Hollywood. When you come the US, if you make it to L.A. , I'd suggest you take the backlot tour at Universal.The majority of the major studios have a backlot tour where visitors can see where their favorite shows and moviss were filmed .

Marty never said his mom was hot. He told her she was "so thin", because in 1985, she's an alcoholic and a little heavier. At the dance, it's obviously Doc's car that Marty is driving. Doc is independently wealthy and has a nice car, both in '55 and '85. If you owned a Delorean, in 1985, and it wasn't even your daily driver, then you had some money. I don't think Back to the Future is a "Christmas classic". I think it was more of a summer blockbuster. I mean, it literally has absolutely nothing to do with Christmas.

This teenager has just been shot at by terrorists, seen the Doc killed by said terrorists, transported back 30 years in time, shot at by a trigger happy farmer, run down by a car, unconscious for 9 hours and wakes up to a younger version of his mother and he's expected to just accept all that like it's any other day?

I still own the original movie poster from the 80s. Back in the day the video shop would just give them away or sell them for 10-20p. We lived in a tiny town so the video rental shop was quite small and didn't have space for all the movie posters or the cardboard standees so they'd charge you a few pence for them or when new movies came out and they were swapping them for newer posters they give them away free with a movie rental. I have original posters for Clockwork Orange, Scarface, all 3 Star Wars and 2 Indiana Jones, Alien, Terminator, Robocop, Ghostbusters, BTTF and BTTF 2... I did have more but they've been ripped/damage in house moves.

Actually, this movie did require good actors for these rolls. Originally, Eric Stoltz was cast in the role of Marty McFly. And many scenes from the film were already shot with Stoltz, and had to be re-shot with Fox. From what I understand, we can still see Stoltz in a scene or two. Stoltz just didn't have what it took for this particular character, and since they had wanted Fox for the roll to begin with, they dismissed Stoltz and picked up Fox when he was made available. So even for a film that seems rather silly, good acting is required. Hmm? Let me rethink that. Not that Stoltz is not a good actor, but in terms of this film, he just didn't have what it took. And can you imagine Jeff Goldberg or Gene Hackman in the roll of Doc Brown? Both were considered for the roll. Both are great actors. (I consider Hackman one of the finest.) But neither one had or has what it takes to play Doc Brown. Lloyd's skills simply brought this character to life in a way no other actor could do. On second thought, you may be right. This film didn't require good actors, it just required the right actors. It's just a plus that the right actors also happened to be good at their craft. By the way, loved this reaction. You made this film fun to relive all over again. Okay, okay. I could have fun reliving this film again and again all on it's own. 😄

As far as I know, there's only ONE scene that still has Stoltz in it. When Marty punches Biff. Tom Wilson (the actor who played Biff) recalls that the punch in particular never got reshot when Fox replaced Stoltz. So that's Stoltz's fist, not Fox's.

I read somewhere that Stoltz played the part way too seriously and dramatically. He IS a good dramatic actor but it was felt that he lacked the light, comedic touch the character needed. I can't imagine anyone other than Lloyd playing Doc (or Reverand Jim from Taxi, for that matter), but I admit I'd like to see Jeff Goldblum's take on the part. He's done some good comedic roles before and he can add some comic touches even in a drama, as in Jurassic Park.

@@dr.burtgummerfan439 Yeah, Stoltz showed the tragic side of the story. There indeed is one, as Marty loses his entire original family. They are still there at the end but they're not the same and he doesn't really know them.

1) At 5:32, the guy who says, "you're too darn loud" is played by Huey Lewis, the singer of "The Power of Love." 2) At 14:55, I had one of those "life preserver" vests in the early '80s. I don't know what we were thinking! 3) Young guys acting like "peeping Toms" was a thing in comedies, but not dramas, back then. The 1978 classic "Animal House" had a more explicit version. "Revenge of the Nerds" (1984) even had a "panty raid." I think most teenage boys considered these scenes to be fantasy, not something you should actually do. 4) I had a thing for Lea Thompson, the actress playing Marty's mother. 5) At 18:18, 1955 Doc Brown is reacting with incredulity that actor Ronald Reagan, who wasn't even a major movie star, would become the President of the U.S. It seemed absurd to many of us as well at the time. 6) At 19:07, the famous "1.21 jigawatts" line is mispronounced. It should be "gigawatts." Before computers were capable of storing gigabytes of memory, the prefix "giga-" was not commonly written or spoken. 7) Obviously, you would need to know down to the hundredth or thousandth of a second when the lightning would strike. Knowing it to the minute would not suffice, but it's a movie, so it works. 8) At 21:14, you said George just needs some confidence. Sadly, that's not true if you're autistic like I am, and George might be. 9) Regarding Biff, bullying was condoned and even admired in the 1950s. A "man's man" took what he wanted. In old movies, a man often grabbed a woman right before kissing her, and if she resisted, it was only for a few seconds. 10) Since white people, particularly Elvis Presley, originally received far too much of the credit for inventing rock & roll, not everyone saw the humor in the joke of the fictional Marvin Berry calling his cousin Chuck Berry to tell him about the "brand new sound." The real Chuck Berry was one of the actual pioneers of rock & roll. 11) I was 15 when this movie was released, which means I could not yet drive. My uncle took my brother and me to the new "multiplex" cinema that had a mind-boggling six screens, and up to six movies to choose from. We debated what to see, and my uncle chose "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome." Bad choice, because that movie is awful. We did go back soon to watch this movie.
@LA_HA

JPMadden: [Edited] 3) Revenge of the Nerds came out in 1984 6) Giga was pronounced both ways and was acceptable -- like "gif" has two pronunciations, though one is how the inventor specifies it's pronounced, both ways are acceptable 9) Bullying was not condoned in the 50s. Condoned and Simply Done And Everyone Avoids The Bully are two different things. It's 2022 and bullies abound, except they're not just doing their thing in the real world. They're everywhere online in virtual spaces, as well. And with all of our anti bullying PSAs, rhetoric, and awareness, here they are. If I'm not mistaken, PSAs were created for undesirable behaviors then just as now. They didn't always work, then just as now 10) Rock and Roll wasn't invented by any one race in America since it's the fusion of several genres of music from various cultural backgrounds. There are many pioneers of Rock and Roll. Most people did see the humor of the scene because how ridiculous it was, and they knew who Chuck Berry was in a very direct way; as most not only grew up on his music, but were around for the resurgence of 50s nostalgia during this time period (Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley, Sha Na Na, Grease, revival concerts, etc.). Kinda like how we laughed about the stuff that happened in Forrest Gump 11) You are evil incarnate. How could you call Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome a bad choice? What about Master Blaster? What about Thunderdome's legendary MC? What about awesome Tina Turner as Auntie Entity? The weird father and son bush pilots? The trippy kids in the oasis? The quotes, man, the awesomeness of the quoes. Haha. I dragged my mother and eldest sister to the dollar theater to go see Thunderdome in a double feature. We all liked the other movie... Die Hard, which none of us had ever heard of when it was in first release, and we were hard core movie goers back then. Ha. No offense meant in this response. I'm just replying to a fellow Back to the Future fan

@@LA_HA The year for "Revenge of the Nerds" was a mistake. Thanks for correcting me. Would it be more accurate to say that today we would label certain behaviors as bullying that in the past we would not? As a fan of old black-and-white movies, I often marvel at how obnoxiously men behaved and were expected to behave.
@LA_HA

@@JPMadden It's not a correction. Just a reminder. As much as I love movies, I make plenty of mistakes. haha The bullying...hmmm... I believe people are basically the same, as is the general consensus of moral behavior. And regardless of era, some people -- both men and women -- were bullies. The reasons are very likely the same as well. I've noticed that the kind of bullying is pretty much the same, too. I guess good men are good and bad men are bad, with most in between sliding around the scale. We agree, though, that bullies are annoying jerks that everyone really should stand up to Way more

Funny thing about this movie... I got curious a week or so ago and did a little math: the average bolt of lightning delivers roughly 9 terawatts of power. That's a bit more than 7400 times what the DeLorean needed. Granted, you lose a fair bit when it destroys the clock and going through the cable, but it's not going to be reduced 7400 times.
@rccraig7580
@rccraig7580 Жыл бұрын
I'm no expert but I was always wondering if That lightning strike could have been powerful enough to completely vaporize the cable before it had a chance to channel into flux capacitor or if the lighting could have completely overloaded and fried every electrical system in the DeLorean before it could travel back to the future?

Fun fact: Michael J. Fox only started filming after six weeks of filming. The Marty McFly character was originally portrayed by Eric Stoltz, but the director was not happy with the seriousness with which Eric Stoltz was interpreting the character, so he was fired and they brought in Michael J. Fox to finish the movie. All the people working on the film at the time were shocked when one day they were called into a meeting and told the leading actor would be replaced and most scenes would have to be re-shot.

One of the things that they included in the movie is the fact that, as cool looking as DeLoreans were, they were not the best. They notoriously broke down... like, a LOT. I love how they never mentioned it, and yet, the car was kind of a piece of junk. It was the Flux Capacitor that made cool.

I used to see skateboarders holding on to trucks, cars, etc., a lot in the late 1980s in NYC. Not common now, but it was a thing, a dangerous one in Midtown traffic, at one time. Michael J. Fox is alive but has Parkinson's Disease. He kept acting for a number of years after his diagnosis, and he is an advocate for research on the disease, but I believe he's retired from acting now.

When I was about 19/20 my friends parents had booked the event hall above the local social club for her 16th birthday party. There was already a DJ who worked there playing general party songs, then one of our friends was a comedy singer and she was to do an hour and Debby, the birthday girl, wanted me to DJ some of the club tunes she loved as I mainly played piano, vocal house, Italohouse and that was her fav kind of music ... I'd already set all my gear up before the party and when it was my turn I remember walking on stage putting the needle on the first record and looking seeing all her family in their 40s 50s and 60s looking at me like those judges were looking at Marty in that school hall. Hhahaha I had never wanted 2 hours to go so quick. There were about 15 or so friends our age who were up and dancing but the majority were all her older family members. And just like this movie I saw one of her aunts mouth the words "Far too loud for me"... I'd been DJing in my bedroom since I was 15/16 and this was going to be my first live gig in front of more than a few friends sitting on my bed drinking cans of Stella. hahaha So I know that feeling of Marty.

The trilogy is full of details and everything fits together perfectly. the actor who plays biff, in reality is the exact opposite, a real nice guy, a comedian. The bully part turned out so well because he was bullied himself. I recommend that you watch chapters 2 and 3 as soon as possible. 😉
