Oh and a little thing I learned this year that others might want to know… The new DAWN POWER WASH dishwashing liquid that comes in a spray bottle… is EXACTLY like the continuous spray bottles you find for sale online. It’s $5 and you don’t ever have to spray soap out of it if you don’t want to. The sprayer comes off. I just cleaned the bottle and sprayer out after the soap was gone. And it works just as well as the bottle I bought online for $12. Just an FYI.

I absolutely LOVE to get my grubby hands on freebie stuff that is damaged. I love to fix things, figure out how to make them work again, or repurpose something. BUT I try not to EVER pay for those items! I am an opportunist! If it is sitting beside the dumpster or the side of the road, I swoop in and snap it up!

Good stuff, listen to the end. Highlights; 1. Too much paint on the brush. No need to dip the brush too far. Avoid the brush strokes. It's not the product, it's you. 2. Not using enough water. Spraying just a little makes a huge difference if paint is too thick. (2-tick) 3. Not priming red and dark woods. Learn about woods. When in doubt, prime it. 4. Have 3 brushes, paint, wax top coat. No cross over use. 5. Not washing your furniture. Do it to avoid adhesion problems; not just spray and a towel, get a bucket of water. 6. Not letting the paint dry before second coat. Use thin coats 7. Not letting it completely dry after washing and before painting will cause cracking. 8. Painting over furniture wax unless you remove with mineral spirits then wash. 9. Buying broken, missing parts or smelly, (like cigarette smoke or mold) furniture. 10. Redoing someone else's projects.

Everything was spot on. I’ve been refinishing and painting furniture since I was 16 (67 now) and everything was true. I love #1 and had to laugh. That’s the first thing i try to teach people - whether it’s painting a wall or a dresser - don’t dip the brush all the way in. And dry brushing means a “dry” brush! Great job!

From years of personal experience and resesrch: cigarette smoke NEVER comes completely off of or out of any material, with glass beinging the only possible exception. Cigarette smoke residue will eventually migrate up through shellac and every other sealing finish such as varnish and paint. Mold spores can survive in a dormant state for many years to decades, and will actively grow again when given warmer moist conditions unless it is completely killed before shellac is applied. That requires treating absolutely every surface including inside joints, under drawerer slides, and under lose veneer. Mold is a nightmare. Intense ozone treatments can help kill mold spores, but that's challenging itself. My husband and I live in the old pier and beam farmhouse that he grew up in that is almost 100 years old. This house did not have central AC or heat until 2008. When we started working on the house before we moved in, mold was growing on lampshades, the furniture, woodwork, and inside cabinets inside this house, and it is still inside walls. Sequestration, ozone, and chemical treatments have made living in the house possible. Unfortunately, I experience anaphylaxis when exposed to most molds. It's not worth the risk of buying any furniture that has a moldy odor because mold odor indicates actively growing spores. Yeah, mold is a nightmare.

Thank you for your videos. I lost my son two weeks ago and before it happened, he had done an portrait of my dog using colored pencil. It looks like a portrait taken by a camera. Hi Kacha. I love all your points and I couldn’t agree more. I’ve been in the business & flipping furniture for 9 years now but I’m going to tell you a story I’ve NEVER told anyone else because it’s sooo embarrassing and I’m mortified when I look back….BUT on the flip side of the coin, I’m also quite glad it happened and happened on my very first piece as I learnt so so much from it. Ok so I got into this as a hobby in 2012. It was something I was really interested in. I had watched hundreds if not thousands over the years before I took the plunge myself. It was my very FIRST piece and I drove quite far to collect it. It was a smallish tv unit with glass doors and when you opened the glass doors it had two shelves (for like a video player/dvd & also a sky box. I decided to do the two shelves with decoupage. Again another skill I had never done before. I used wallpaper and not napkins or rice paper/transfer paper. My shelves actually turned out beautifully. And the vision I had for this piece was just plain white. In fact I used Annie Sloan - Old White chalk paint. And then I wanted it heavily distressed. So I did my first coat and I’m thinking to myself wow this is going better than I thought. I let it dry for hours before I did the next coat. When I went back to do the next coat I had a brownish stain just on the right side of the piece. At this point I had no idea what bleed through was 😬 so I sanded it and done the second coat. I left it overnight and next morning went to it and again this brown stain was still there. Instead of asking my friends who many do this for a living or some just as a hobby or I could have even googled it, I didn’t! I just powered through and stupidly put a third coat on but SUPER SUPER thick. Well the end of the story goes like this. I ended up putting 5 coats on in total. Two that were normal & then three that were super mega thick. I used 3/4 of a tin of my NEW Annie Sloan chalk paint on one very small piece 🤣 was such a very expensive lesson to learn but so glad I did learn it. And I still proudly displayed it in my living room with the brown stain facing the wall haha. I had put the paint on that thick that when I came to distress the piece I couldn’t do it with a piece of sandpaper as it was too thick. I had to get my palm sander out lmao 😂😂

I so agree with all your tips. There are too many "painters" on youtube that are sloppy, have drips inside drawers, don't paint the sides, etc. I often wonder what those pieces look like after a year when gobs of paint are applied and brushes are filled with tons of paint. I've seen so many times a brush dipped completely in the paint to where the paint drips off the brush and you can hear the brush going over the piece because it has so much paint. I love watching you because you take your time, are neat and your pieces look extremely professional. One painter I actually stopped watching because she often said "I don't care it will look fine" slop, slop, slop with paint. Keep up the wonderful videos and lovely music. You are an artist.

Hi Kacha. Your a great teacher ! Thank you. I have a piece of furniture. I’ve had it since I was 19. It’s about 50 years old. A secretary desk. Top and bottom. With shutters. Dark knotty pine. I think I should prime it. I’ve been Washing it. It has a lot of gashes and some holes. What type wood filler should I use and what’ primer should I use? Me and mom have been watching your videos. Your amazing. Seriously. She’s 85. Her comments are “WOW!! She’s amazed. Me too. ❤️
