Sometimes you have to wash clothes while traveling, or for some reason don't have access to a washer and dryer. Here's how to wash your clothes in a sink or bathtub, with an extra tip on how to get the clothes to dry faster.
This is a great method if you're stuck in a hotel or hostel, or if you're camping.
The detergent I use in this video is available here: www.amazon.com/Sea-Summit-Trav...
The fast-drying underwear I wash is Ex-Officio, and you can get them here: www.amazon.com/ExOfficio-Give-...

Can't because we have a washing machine but the manager said we can't us it because there was a water leakage coming from the bathroom; plumbing here sucks and you can't call a plumber btw. They don't fix anything here; the refrigerator motor is dying (can't wait to leave here). The washing machine here (their machine) in this house costs you almost to $10 bucks a wash and another $7.50 for drying them. So I have a helluva perfect reason for hand washing and air drying my clothes.

There's two things you are doing wrong. 1. Don't twist clothes when you wringing them out, it stretches them. Squeeze don't twist. 2. What's the point of filling the sink with clean water and soaking them again? That removes most soap but not all. Use an unplugged sink and keep the tap running. Then one by one rinse and squeeze the clothes repeatedly until no more soap comes out. A further tip, use hair dryer carefully to help dry clothes.

Really great tips here. I don't have a washing machine, mainly due to expense, so was looking for a way to wash my jeans, towels, socks etc as cheaply as possible. This method cuts out a number of things - expense in buying a washing machine, expense in buying detergents [as you could just use soap, shower gel as long as it smells nice] and you would also be saving on your energy bills in your home too.

I've found that a fan directed at hanging clothes will dry them faster than just hanging them. You may or may not have access to a fan, but if you do, it can help. The fastest I have dried clothes just hanging inside with a fan was about an hour. Of course, it depends on the fabric and how much water you can get out of it before hanging. If traveling by car, it's not hard to toss in a small high-velocity fan.

I use to do this when I lived on my own because laundry was $10/load. Here was my method. Two storage bins of the exact same size. One that I drilled 1/2 in holes throughout. Fill the non drilled bin with water and soap in the tub or shower. Throw your clothes in. How you scrub is up to you. I would use a clean sock to scrub sensitive areas like underarms and underwear, as well as any stains. You can also just rub the material on each other. Let them sit for 20 minutes and then give it a quick agitation with your hand or a utensil. Then I'd rinse everything and take it outside to my balcony or deck. Transfer everything to the drilled bin. And put the non drilled bin on top. Now either push or step inside the bin to squeeze all the water out. Repeat this process a couple times. Youll have to move the clothes around to get all the excess water out. I'd also ring out the clothes before transfering them to the bin. Then I'd just hang them over my deck or balcony. Secured in place with magnets (metal balcony rail). 🤷‍♀️ My landlord was an absolute ass asking $10/load and I didn't have a car to get to the only laundry mat in town at the time. Yeah it's a bit more hands on but on a hot day - I could have 4 loads of laundry done in as little as 2 hours including dry time. I now have a house with laundry machines and I sometimes still use this method to save hydro and turning on the air conditioner.

When I travel and sleep in my van I wash my clothes while I shower every time letting the soapy (body wash) water collect and using my feet to agitate them . I then do a rinse and I dry them on the roof of van while I drive. I do this in hotels, gyms and even an off-grid property where I shower with a 5 gallon home depot bucket while shallow well water that was warmed by the sun. I keep all my clothes in a giant duffle bag I use as a back rest for a couch I have in the back. I've gone for weeks like this and it just becomes routine.

Heres a tip to all who wanna dry hand-washed clothes faster. Get a salad spinner and place wrung out clothing inside and spin all excess water out. Will only be able to do one or two smaller piece at a time and some may not fit, just depends. Then, hang on hangers and dry. You could dry even quicker with a strategically placed fan or place a drying rack near a heat duct. When I had a job that was an hour or so away, I placed my damp clothing on hangers and hung them in the back of my minivan with all the windows open. By the time I got to work everything was dry. When I got home all I had to do was taken them in side and hang up. No reason to waste energy on a dryer with the great outdoors to help you out.

Handy tutorial, just ran into a situation where Its too dangerous to use the community washer and dryers (tier 4 lockdown, weeeee!) So this will keep the tops and undies fresh! Many thanks!

Keep your knees dry. Stand on the towel. Weight and pressure gets clothes squeezed more effectively and you'd be drier in the process. Highly recommend investing in a super large beach towel. I've got a 5’x5’ one that's a few decades old have had since the military. I fold it to be two foot wide. The towel being folded comes in handy with items that are more difficult to squeeze by hand. Depending on the item for me determines how I fold or roll towel. Great tutorial reminder here. Thank you. My washing machine just tanked today. Not getting another one before work is finished on the house. So, back to hand washing. A couple of other things that help me, I found an antique roller for a bucket mop. Cleaned it up and now use for rolling water out of clothes $25 at a Salvation Army find, compared to almost $200 for a laundry roller brand new. Also, 5 gallon bucket and a $25 hand washing laundry wand from Amazon gives the clothes a good scrub similar to a washer. Exercise isn't bad either 😁 For all you Covid folks, for under $30 you have an instant washer to handle more clothes at once. For a few dollars more put holes in another bucket, one inside the other. Once laundry is done, pull the bucket out and the water drains. Do this in the bathtub. Put the bucket without the holes into the laundry bucket. Step inside to drain all the water out. Then, use the towel method to squeeze the item or use the roller or both. For stains, you can get a washboard to help scrub. Hope this helps

I'm going to start doing this because my washing machine is breaking down and I can't really afford a new one right now. Well I could save up but it would take ages and I see no reason to buy another if that will break down too. My old washing machine did last over 11 years though and it was quite cheap too. They cost too much nowadays though.

A quick way of drying is to hang your clothes in the bathroom and plug in a space heater. Be sure to shut doors and windows to keep the heat from excaping I had to do this when my dryer went out. It works really well when you need to dry clothes.
@helenarichard

I do this. I hang a white towel over my towel rack and lay my delicates over them. The rack is above a space heater so it brings the warm air right into the fabric. It is dry in 30 minutes.

I got in trouble with my old apartment manager for hand washing and drying without their washers/dryers. (Some things just can't be washed or dried that way.) They just wanted the money obviously. (Their laundry facility was more than twice the price with smaller washers and dryers, than the laundry mat down the road)

Thank you. My washer went out and once I'm all caught up with my laundry I may just hand wash my stuff. It's very satisfying and relaxing to hand wash my clothes. It makes me feel less dependant on electricity. I'm sure my grandmother must think I'm crazy but I'm sure I would have done just fine growing up when she did. :):):) thx again bunches

I used the sink and hotel shampoo soap one time to wash my sweaty underwear and some shirts. It was hot and sweaty that time in D.C. To dry the clothes I stuffed portions of the underwear and shirts into the slots of the airflow output (didn't have laundry clips of course) of the AC/heating system inside my hotel room. It worked so good I in fact washed my blue jean trousers.
