I've been doing this for a few years, and one thing I want to pass on is using a couple of box fans (square 20" by 20" $30ea)pointing up laying on top of empty 5gal buckets in the empty tub with all the wet clothes either clipped to free plastic string from homedepot for tying stuff onto cars, or hanging on plastic coat hangers. First you let the wet clothes drip for 24 hours, then set up the fans and buckets for a day or two to thoroughly dry the hanging clothes.

I washed my clothes like this in my first apartment and it's not bad. I remember people would be complaining about not having clean clothes because they didn't have laundry mat money but nobody wanted to wash their clothes in the tub/sink and they always asked me why I never run out of clean clothes and how can I afford to go to laundry mat so much with limited income. Some were surprised/shocked at the fact that this is how I was getting by. At that time a friend was staying with me and he was a cook at Sonic and his clothes would be so nasty and greasy and I got them so clean and looking fresh and new everyone was amazed.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who hand washes their clothes😅 I live in an apartment and theres no way of having a washing machine and dryer and the nearest laundromat is half a mile away and I have a 10 month old and i dont have my lisence. I dont have a bath tub as my bathroom is super tiny. I just use a bin, fill it up with hot water and add oxi-clean and a little bit of laundry soap to help take out odors and stains when washing my daughter's clothes and I use my feet also to "wash" the clothes and than use a metal clothes rack to hang up the clothes and air dry in another room woth a window open. Been doing it for a few months now cause i didnt like relying on my mom for rides or a bus in order to wash the clothing. Also, i have alot of delicate clothing and I hate using a washer for my daughter's clothes since its "rough" on her clothes. I wish people handwashed their clothes more!

Looks like I'm not the only one whose washing machine broke at a very bad time lol. I like putting the larger clothes over the curtain rod and twist them there. It really helps twisting harder to get more water out for a shorter drying time, but it can get a lot of water on the floor.

If you have a box fan, or any large fan, you can also aim it at your drying rack to speed up the process. If it dries too slowly, it could end up growing bacteria and smelling.

Yup, brought here by a broken washing-machine and non-responsive repair dude. Biggest tip my friend taught me about laundry by hand is to do with speeding up drying time. If you are at home, set an alarm for every two hours and return to the laundry to gently squeeze out the water that gravity will be sending downwards, then rotate the hanging position of each item. Laborious, but gets you moving every couple of hours and re-hanging so that up-sides now face down and insides now face outward really helps dry time. As many comments say it can stay damp and get mildew if there isn't enough heat/air-flow to dry quick and is so much wetter to start with compared to those out the machine. I've been doing this with machine-washed clothes for the past few years too as no dryer, and again, speeds up drying time a lot especially in a flat :-)

Important Tip: Never wash socks and underwear together. Fungus/yeast spores from feet/ socks are not killed off by detergent and heat. Spores will transfer to undies which in turn will cause nastiness in places you don't want them....
@Scott110782 жыл бұрын
Yeah....... Too late, I got to find out the fun way the washing machine is no longer sending the signal to actuate the drain valve. I'm a disabled vet and a lot of that damage is neurological so time runs a bit different for me. I've spent the last several hours trying to find this awful smell. I finally narrowed down the area. The following was my internal dialog "The washer? Wtf?? Oh yeah I forgot about that load I had in there how many days?? Sniff gag holy crap..." So here I am learning how to wash clothes in my bathtub, THANKFULLY MY DRYER WORKS. Man I hope I won't be editing this to say hey guess what else broke.

You and other people who make videos like this keep referring to the water as dirty. I don't think that's dirt that you see--it's mostly just dye, because you're washing in hot water. I've been doing my laundry in the bathtub since April, but I have always (and still do) washed my clothes in cold water.
@irenebertoni4 жыл бұрын
I still enjoyed your video a lot though. I like the story about the ex-boyfriend and the apocalypse. Was just washing my clothes again tonight and thought of a question that folks here might have an opinion about. If the instructions on your liquid detergent said to use 2 capfuls in an HE machine and 4 capfuls in a non-HE machine, and you're doing a full load in the bathtub, which would you go by? I'm wondering if me stabbing at the clothes with the plunger-shaped mobile breathing washer is equivalent to an HE machine, because I'm focused, or just a regular machine. I don't know anything about washing machines and especially not HE machines, and now I don't expect that I ever will own a washing machine. The only thing I know about HE machines is that you have to use low-sudsing detergents in them. Maybe that's the only reason the instructions say to use less detergent in an HE machine--because it's regular detergent, I guess.

??? Even if you always wash in hot water? My clothes stop bleeding after the first few washes usually and most stopped bleeding long ago when still using a washer. Idk my brain feels like hot water is necessary, I don’t use cold unless the instructions say because hot seems cleaner.

@@CelticSaint My whole life I've always washed colors in cold water, and I've always felt they were still clean. Some questions: 1. Have you looked into or experimented with adding an oldschool washboard to this kind of setup? 2. Have you tried out those DIY hacks involving drilling holes into new toilet plungers and putting a broom or mop handle into them to agitate the laundry by hand? 3. Have you found a good way to avoid the scalded foot issue, like a foot covering? I know rubber gloves can work for the hand-wringing portion, but I'm curious about something that could go on the feet that wouldn't either create a slipping hazard or inhibit agitating the clothes to get them clean.

@@CaronClancey its my first time! You were right it is a workout! Of course the washer broke down during the hottest time of the year here in Maine. My work clothes were so nasty. Bath tub washer worked great! I hung them up and maybe that brutal sun can work with me and dry them out fast.

This is so helpful if your washer and dryer is broke until you are able to get it fix this how you wash and dry clothes 👍😀

Turn on your bathroom fan if you have one or open the windows or aim a floor fan at your clothes- that's what I did, with a box fan on high and it worked to get the clothes dry much much faster and I just aimed the fan at different angles to maximize the ventilation airflow drying power.

I had to do this ages ago when my washer broke. I used my 3 year old(at that time) as the agitator 🤣 I put her in a swimsuit and used baby soap. Then... Just let her play in the tub. Rinse and repeat!

Use a plunger instead of stepping in that hot water..it will also work as agitation

I use a detached wooden broom handle to agitate the clothes in the tub or just let them soak for a half hour

Currently having to do this while waiting on the agitator in the mail for my washer. I added soap before then let them soak a while then got in and agitated with my feet. When wringing out I wring out the small and thin articles then lay big ones down length wise in the tub then with my feet stand on it slowly walking towards the drain. I usually have to do two rinses so wringing out three times or until water color isn't dirty looking.

So much cleaner than washing with an old washer that leaves old residue on your cloths from years and years of use ,dryers are almost always good with a new filter In but the washer it's always full of sludge past 1 yr

Some odd reason this looks kinda satisfying. Just the other day, I was tempted to take my big bin out side to wash a few pieces of clothes. Then if I was out in the country I’d really want to line dry my sheets and towels. Yeah I’m in the city area. My clothes smell so bad to me if I hang them on the porch for a few ours :( this is kinda cool
@aembusiness3 жыл бұрын
The water will never become perfectly clear unless you’re doing whites bc most clothing items leach a tiny bit of color during each wash which causes the water to appear slightly grey or dirty as well as actual dirty clothes so be mindful and don’t wash things too many times

I was taught to do this as a child. And actually did it during the pandemic because we just moved and didn't have a washer or dryer.

I was thinking about this recently since I kinda don't want to buy an expensive hybrid washer&dryer machine yet. I knew it would be simple since it just adding warm water and detergent and anti bacterial soap. Then I'll use my hair dryer to dry them out lol

Please keep making videos! I loved it ❤️ I actually had a very similar talk with my boyfriend and we have been talking about the end of the world etc. And I am like crap if I didn't have the internet would I know how to do anything to have any self survival skills.. nope! So now I want to learn how to do everything without electricity just in case. I want to smart about this. This was so helpful for me cause our apartment using the quarter washing machines and because of the coin shortage we can't do laundry 😩 thank you! I was always thinking maybe putting on a heater in the bathroom while they are drying might speed up the process 🤷🏼♀️ thanks again!

Don't do big loads and you can use the kitchen sink. Clothes don't need to be washed every time you wear them either, unless you've been out, in which case you can use Lysol concentrate properly diluted to spray them down. I grew up very poor in Appalachia (not an old person, I'll be 38 this month) and that's how we did things.
@bonriver94203 жыл бұрын
Lysol is full of chemicals. That is not a good thing for your skin to come in contact with.

Kitchen sink has raw meat bacteria and bacteria from everything else. It would be gross even if you clean it with bleach a few times.

We spent 100$ on a mop wringer /bucket from Amazon. It is a traditional floor mop unit, like we've all seen the janitor use. This is used exclusively for clothes. Nothing else. That was last year. This year I spent 110$ on a simple single dial costWay washer. It goes in the tub and is so easy. It is electric. The non electric-manual washer is 70$ and easy too. I also m spent 55 on an air dry rack from target.. So with these 3 items i am able to do my full laundry at home, excluding blankets. I do jeans and sheets as well. No rugs. Think about it, NO HAND WRINGING as we see her struggling with. M. Illinois. 👕

God Bless you. I'm at a hotel for over two weeks where I can't do my own laundry. I could pay the hotel $60 to do it for me but why do that when I can just do it myself. It's a great feeling of accomplishment when I do it for myself. Side note: I must travel for work. It's not by choice.

I would use the shower curtain rod in the middle of the tub to hang dry
