Hi, what if incision of a hornbill nest size is made in big trees and see whether it can help to increase their population?
@cibir.m.711411 күн бұрын
If an incision is made in large trees where hornbills nest, the approach would fail for several reasons: Hornbill Nesting Behavior: Hornbills seal their nests inside natural cavities of large trees using mud, saliva, and other materials. If an incision is made to artificially alter or open such a cavity, it would disrupt this critical nesting behavior, preventing hornbills from feeling safe enough to reproduce. Tree Health: Making incisions in big trees could damage their structural integrity, leading to decay or disease. A weakened tree would be less likely to offer the stability and protection hornbills require for nesting. Disturbance of Natural Habitat: Hornbills are sensitive to environmental changes. Cutting into trees might drive them away from the area, as they avoid sites that show human intervention or disruption. Loss of Nesting Cavities: Natural cavities take years to form and are rare, especially in large old-growth trees. An incision could compromise these cavities, rendering them unusable for hornbills and other cavity-nesting species. Ecological Impact: Hornbills play a significant role in the ecosystem as seed dispersers. If their nesting is disrupted, it would lead to a cascading effect, reducing forest regeneration and biodiversity. In essence, such an incision not only fails to support hornbills but actively harms their chances of survival by damaging their natural habitat and nesting process. Protecting undisturbed, mature trees remains the best way to preserve hornbill populations.

Thank You for the well explained reply. Preserving large trees including those in private lands and experimenting with artificial nesting like that in Buxa tiget reserve might help.. though the field workers like you might know it better..
