is that Crisco lard or vegetable grease.. what was the deciding factor to make the formula with the one teas spoon of winter green oil, not one and a half or 3/4
@kadyscout3 ай бұрын
Name brand traditional Crisco . Never use Great value or lesser brands. It's not thick enough. This recipe was given to me by my mentor from South Carolina, back in 2006. We've never deviated from what we were taught. I'd suggest ya'll do the same. However, if you have 100's of colonies, and want to test things, you have room to sacrifice colonies. But why? This has already been done. We've written an E-book on Essential Oil strategies. Here's the link to purchase; www.littlecreekbeeranch.com/essential-oils-handbook Thanks for the question. cheers, ken

@@kadyscout Crisco has two brands, one is Crisco lard and the other is Crisco vegetable grease, I was wondering if it made a difference, I do use the lard. lard being pig fat and the vegetable being made from corn or something

The SHB can't tolerate the smell of WG oil vapor. If they stay in the hive, they die. They prefer to fly away. Either way, the die, or they fly. I DO NOT care. I want them gone. Once the WG grease is applied, the colony is closed up. When this happens, the bees will vibrate to regain their heat. This, TURNS ON the WG vapor. This is a beautiful system. The bees make this work. The vapor will kill SHB and Varroa mites. If you're unsure, just test a colony. Slide in greased mite tray. Leave tray in for 3 days. Apply the WG grease the first day, close hive, slide in mite tray. After 3 days, pull tray, count the mites and beetles. Also know, SHB like to pay HIGH in the hive. They don't like being down low inside the cluster. This is why the WG grease is applied in the top brood box. We don't put the WGG in the honey boxes. No need. We've written an E-book on how to do this and more. If you're interested, here's the link; www.littlecreekbeeranch.com/essential-oils-handbook If you have further questions, please give me a shout. @@kadyscoutwhat is the reason for the sugar and crisco? If the oil is the main thing to get them to leave, why not just add a sponge with the oil on it?

Hi Ken, here in Australia Cristobal is a brand name for various oils peanut, sunflower and canola as an example. Could you just clarify if there is a particular oil type to be used. Cheers

I'm going to try this out, the natural way is the best way I've always believed. I have two vertical hives and two horizontal hives. All have screen bottom boards, the long hives have oil trays under the #8 screen bottom. The vertical boxes seem to be more prone to shb, not so much with the horizontal hives.

How many hives do you run on average in your operation?😀
@kadyscout4 ай бұрын
Normally? 30...ish. We teach and coach a lot of people, so our numbers are down, around 10. which is fine with me, easier to manage for us. My favorite number? about 15. I can usually get really good honey production from 15 good colonies. thanks for asking. cheers, ken
