The only way to deal with it moving forward is to check the balance more regularly and consider opening another account elsewhere so not all your savings are in just one place.

I would contact my lawyer. It's clear the bank was at fault for not sending withdrawal notifications. And in my country the bank *will* pay for the damages. And not just for three months. Also, check your accounts on a monthly basis. For any unusual activity. Also have double, triple, quadruple factor authentification enabled at all time. And never log into your account while in public.

I don't know where you live, but recently there are numerous of cases like this happens in Indonesia. I don't know how are the regulations that these banks work, but they always point their fingers to the account owners. From my experience, I use Mandiri Bank and I once got blocked. Before it happens I got notification there's a problem with a transaction. When I visit the bank they told me, I got Skimmed. It seems someone rigged one of "Indomarching" EDC devices, I dare to say this because it happens during covid. At that time I only visit the nearest store, which the nearest store happen to be that store, to buy stuff or doing transactions. Thankfully nothing got taken away from me, and the workers immediatly told me what to do and recommend me to get a new card too.

one of the advices to prevent that at least here is: from the app of the bank you can enable and disable online shopping, so just enable when you are going to buy something and then disable the option, its really awful to cancel the card and beging the process to get another one

The problem with that is some retailers only put a charge on the card when they're ready to ship. Some retailers might put a $1 hold (or whichever currency) upon checkout and invoice the remainder upon fulfillment. An option for some is to limit the withdrawal amount for a debit card, or set notifications as well as setting a limit per transaction. And then using a credit card for most transactions and keeping up on paying the credit card(s) off on time. Some if not many banking institutions offer better consumer protection for credit cards then they might for debit cards, though check the fine print prior ofc. I've had a debit card stolen and used before, it took less than 5 minutes after I contacted my bank for them to freeze the card, issue me a new one and reverse any charges made on it. If you're worried about your payment information being leaked online (e.g. data breaches), virtual payment cards are an option to look into. For the US, Privacy Cards is a free option.

Maybe this is just where I am, but all I have to do to get a replacement bank card is go in to any branch, show my ID and answer my security question. Maybe sign my name for a signature comparison, but that's it. Takes less than 3 minutes from getting to the counter. The hard part of this will be getting any refunds on most of the stolen money, given the amount of time it was used for.

Sucks that this happened to her, but boy is it a good reminder to ALWAYS CHECK YOUR MONTHLY STATEMENT. That is your ONLY window to dispute fraudulent charges in time to actually have them reversed.

Best advice I can give is if using a credit card alot for food....buy a prepaid one. Load up the card every week with enough to cover the food. If it gets hacked these cards have nothing to give them...a few bucks. And the cards are easily replaced. Never use a card with a limit. They will try to max it out asap will multiple small unnoticeable charges. Had it happen to me after Christmas after buying gifts online. Never again lol.

I go through this a lot. Everytime someone used my card to buy Uber eats I immediately get hacked. Seems some places don't keep their info secure. It's always annoying to cancel the card

It's particularly annoying especially when your bank doesn't pick up on it and you aren't checking too much, for me I ain't got money like that so I'm always checking and my bank is pretty quick at realizing the erroneous charges.

exactly this! I set my bank notifications so that I get a message for any kind of activity. my first card got hacked twice, but either the company or I would catch it right away and they would cancel the transaction and send a new card. their app also lets you lock down the card if you expect there might be shenanigans happening. then I changed banks and got a new card, and all the fraudulent transactions stopped. the most that happened was when they replaced the card before the expiration and when the chip stopped working. it's nice when the company can fix the hacking instances but it's better when the security can prevent it without your actions. when you're working hard and getting paid, money is literally the thing you need to pay attention to make sure it's being used the way you intended

I'm glad my bank checks, it happened to me one time when I was trying to buy dinner in CA and I got charged for a hotel suite in freaking New York City. Bank automatically called me and confirmed that New York charge couldn't be me as I live on the West Coast. They automatically sent me a new card too and froze my old account. I only used the card for occasional night outs and paying for subscriptions. The only thing I could figure was that my info was stolen because it was the card connected to my PSN account when they got hacked. I'd probably never known if my bank didn't check with me.

It's moments like this I'm grateful that my credit union starts texting and calling if I make transactions too close to or in another state (although it was hella stressful when I went to Vegas...) Well, I'm glad she's getting some of the cash back. It's unfortunate that it happened to her but credit card/wire fraud could happen to any of us. The best thing we can do is to stay vigilant with our accounts.

A friend of mine also got hacked and some beach in indonesia was buying stuff through amazon and send it to him. She caught on and canceled and blocked everything but it still happend a second time with the same hacker and as last time she also caught on early and blocked again. Since it happend a second time she checked everywhere for leaks and sure she found an old account that she onces used. Because the domaine closed she thought that her acc was gone too. She didnt know someone hijacked it before being gone for good. Shes blocked her card now and changed banks for good measure.

@@Raijin1133 it usually happens to credit card because the payment for purchasing something is different from debit card. but it doesnt erase possibility that debit card got its data stolen from some random atm machine outside mall, they got card reader around the card entrance

I very rarely transact using my actual savings account, and usually just use an e-wallet with debit visa. And I only keep a maximum of 100USD in it at a time. Whenever I need something online, I'll just transfer the amount I needed and just use the debit visa.

it sounds like bank has issue having the notifications working consistently and also it does feel like her bank is not sophisticated enough to secure the accounts/card...in my bank i can turn on/off my card for transaction anytime in a mobile app...i can also set the limit per transaction and number of transaction per day anytime in a mobile app further giving me control on my account...she should try looking for bank that has such capabilities....if theres none, well no choice but to be always vigilant....

Yes, it's always an emotional situation when you find out you got scammed, and probably won't get your money back. But life can go on. She isn't broke suddenly.
