It is quite scary where figure skating has come. Skaters like Yuna, Mao, Nancy, Michelle, Carolina were still top skaters in their mid 20s, even hit big at that age, winning Olympic and World medals. Now ladies hit big at the age of 15, win everything just in one season, then struggle with growth. Next season someone younger comes, and vicious cycle continues. Whatever, I wish Kaetlyn the best, she truly loved this sport, she worked so hard to improve her technique. She deserves the best.

It wasn't like this three decades ago! Skaters like Katerina Witt and Sorya Bonelli stayed in elite competition from age 12 until their late 20s, having won medals and qualified for World and Olympic competitions! They dominated their sports for about 4 to 6 years, then skated because they loved the sport! They also lived in countries which sponsored them 100%! Money is the reason many US skaters quit after earning a medal. Therefore, let stop fooling ourselves and using the excuse that body change plays the most important roles when parents go broke and are almost homeless to support their children's art. Skaters need to get to work and pay back what the US government refuses to do: help pay for training!

Retirement age for professional figure skater is mid to late 20’s for various reasons one being the toll it takes on the body she was 23 retirement was around the corner for her same with the one you mentioned
@awuma2 жыл бұрын
The typical age of top women figure skaters has sometimes been up, sometimes down. I recall teenagers being dominant in the late 1970's and the 1980's when numerous triple jumps first became de rigueur, and now the Eteri quad revolution has brought very young teenagers to the fore (i would place her earlier quad-less exponents in the same category). It's interesting that gymnastics had a similar phenomenon, and there also the minimum age for seniors was raised. The physique of modern women gymnasts is much more muscular compared with a few decades ago, and it wouldn't surprise me if the same happens in figure skating. The Empress and Kaetlyn are probably more representative of future skaters than Eteri's pre-expiry-date adolescents. And Elizaveta is learning quads... not forgetting others past 20 who are doing the same, such as Jekatierina Kurakowa. As for age, all eyes in the 22/23 season will be on pairs skater Deanna Stellato, making a serious bid on the international stage at 39.

She just got what she was capable of...Olympic gold medal (team event) and bronze medal for individual competition. She was Gold medalist at Worlds Championship the same year. The contest is too hard every coming season and she wouldn’t be able to challenge to the next generation of skaters. That was and obvious and wise decision.

Kaetlyn has always been such an enjoyable skater to watch. The heights of her jumps and her speed and power across the ice were amazing, and she was always a great performer. She'll truly be missed in the skating world, and I wish her the best of luck in her future.

While Kaetlyn is honest and diplomatic on her retirement, she cannot say the full truth. Here's the full truth: ladies is for the juniors, those between 15-17 pretending to be seniors. You are 'old' at 20, and have no choice but to retire at 22-24. One cannot change the biology of development of females. When they hit 18 the body has changed so much that most can't do the fancy triples, certainly not quads. The very best of the few in the world could just barely do them, frequently with under-rotations, falls. Without those you are finished because the young tiny ones can. These are the jumps that get the big points, the podium. So going forward there will be no such thing as real senior ladies. A big pile of little ones will compete on doing the big jumps. The winners will last one season, disappear from the scene in two. As to a professional career in figure skating, forget about it.

The sad future of the figure skating world. Miss the old days when artistry was more important than technical abilities.
@MsSlucyna5 жыл бұрын
Sadly what you write is true. Mind though that in ladies'artistic gymnastics things seem to go in the right direction and there are more mature female gymnasts still competing than there used to be. Perhaps figure skating will change its priorities one day as well.

Heli City yes, but to be fair, Kaetlyn also started out in seniors as a teenager like every other now “mature” 9Kaetlyn, yes, but Ashley for example considers shimmying her chest as mature artistry. Kaetlyn is the best in that group of skaters now in their 20’s, but still turned senior, competing as a teenage adolescent.
@helicity76515 жыл бұрын
@@amyg4115 Ashley, Kaetlyn others now in their early 20's skated in their teens for sure. But the teens of their era and today are quite different. Today's mid-teens can do 3Lz-3Lo, 3S-3Lo, 3A, 3A-3Lo, 4TLo. Which immediately remove hope of major titles from those of Ashley/Kaeltlyn era.
@fredrika275 жыл бұрын
@@MsSlucyna That's because they realize that over training doesn't bring medals. The oldest gymnasts is 44yo. Most Europeans are in their 20s and unlike skating have decade long careers!

She's correct retiring at this point in her career. The new crop of skaters coming up will be extremely difficult and next to impossible for her to keep up with. She's smart to go out the way she is!!

She would go no where if she decided to come back next season. There’s so much competition from the younger skaters doing triple axels and quads. Retiring now is the best option for her in my opinion.

In today's competitive field, where teenage jumping beans are fighting over medals by landing such crazy elements as 4S, 4T, 3As and 3Lz-3Lo, there's no place for mature artistic skaters like Kaetlyn. She's smart enough to see that and decides to quit. I'll always cherish her gorgeous "Milord" program.

wonderful person, wonderful skater and wonderful role model. She has the credentials to be a broadcaster in respect to name recognition and knowledge of at least skating and she is attractive but she doesn't speak with a lot of confidence or polish. That can be taught somewhat but she isn't a natural star quality like Johnny Weir, Adam Rippon or Kurt Browning or Tracey Wilson. That could limit her at best to Canada but I wish her well.
