Those underperforming players that he is talking about which were not in the Australian tour were Azhar, Jadeja and Mongia. Sachin had made a bold decision however, the mistake he made was that the replacements were like on dosti-yaari basis rather than merit and they should have gone to Aus a month before the tour and slogged out in practice match as Sourav did in his first tour. To be honest Sachin did not had man management skills. That tour was painful to watch for Indian fans and when Azhar returned, he was truly a refreshing experience because India got back to winning ways and won a few tournaments, esp against Pak.

Azaharuddin alwayz performed below to his potential during Sachin captaincy. Manoj prabhakar sting operation confirmed it that few players including Azahar were in match fixing and they were penalized later by BCCI. BCCI banned them from indian team. Sachin has great understanding of game, but cricket is team game. There is a saying “Akele chana bhand nahi phod sakta”. Ansuman gaikwad once said- Even satta market never bet when sachin used to bat.

There are some factual discrepancies: 1)I don;t think captains were appointed series by series in 2000 unless the current captain was injured. 2) India did not lose badly in the first Test, it was close. India did have batting collapses, but SA's chase in 4th innings had a lot of hiccups. It took an assault by Mark Boucher on the debutant Murali Kartick and a lot of luck on Boucher's part for SA to win that Test. 2nd Test was more one sided as SA batting got it together. 3) The Sharjah ODI series between Ind, Pak and SA was won by Pak not SA. I would expect better from a journalist.

That was a really bad wicket. 120 was a really tough target. No excuses we should have won the test..West Indies was a good team that time, see the highlights and you will see the huge crowds which one doesn't see now. In my opinion the target of 120 would have been achieved either by Australian grit or if someone like jayasuriya would have played a quick fire knock.

Sachin recomended dhoni's name to bcci as per the story, as for sehwag remember he was dropped after 2007 wc in WI, he made his comeback only 6 months later during 2007 t20 wc. He was not even part of team during series with australia and pakistan.
