I always say that my main secret is exactly as you said - scooped mids, drop your lowest bass frequency especially w a 5 string and my extra spice is to actually add highs. You get the rumble and roar of the low notes and nice punch as well. All around.
@hanneshampel33035 жыл бұрын
Its actually crazy when you showed us the different chord progressions. They change the mood of the whole song completely and also the feeling. V I and V II were typically poppy - Reggae Sounding. As soon as you played the third one everything stardet grooving as fuck, although you didnt change anything in the riddim itself. Roots Radics and Greg Isaacs came to my mind. Good work.

Sir I have learned so much from your videos, I'm a bass player reggae of course and now I'm learning how to produce my own reggae, I have Logic Pro X and I see it has everything I need to get the music from my head to come to life. Most of my questions were answered in your previous videos so I have much to do to my songs. When I get finished I will reach out to you again. Thanks n bless up
@DMKahn7 жыл бұрын
Bantubrotha I started as a reggae bassist as well. I think out of any instrument player, the bass player has a great idea of how reggae should "feel"... So it shouldn't be too hard of a transition once you understand some basic piano stuff and chord progressions (which you Probably already know because of your bass experience). It will take time to learn how to mix... EQ, compression, etc. Etc. But keep it up and you'll be where I'm at in no time. Also check out the Recording Revolution here on KZbin. That's where I learned 80% of my mixing tips and techniques. Even tho it's not reggae, mixing ideaology is pretty global throughout genres. Like I said, you are a bassie so you know how reggae should sound. Heavy drums and bass. Keep up the good works brother.

DM Kahn yes I'm learning how to use Logic Pro to get this music out my head, I need to know how to make audio tracks midi to save CPU speed and how to make aux/busses so when I want to put delay on the snare. So I have your videos to watch, thanks bro ahah bless

GJ on this compressor adding harmonics on certain notes. Very nice. And good release times, comp makes the bass even more grounded and focused on the fundament of the song. I am not a friend of adding that SSL BusComp that early in the Mix. But thats just personal taste.
@DMKahn5 жыл бұрын
Hannes DerKannEs thanks breddren. I agree it’s a matter of taste on the compressor. I find I like the harmonics the SSL comp adds so I like to mix into it. I just have to be careful not to add too much gain otherwise it’ll be squishing more and more! Cheers and thanks for the comment, I love constructive criticism and differing schools of thought!

Great tutorial man. Could you elaborate on the drum sounds and how you got them to sound like that ? Specifically the snare and the toms. Could you tell us if they are your own samples or if you got them from somewhere else. Thank you. Jah bless.
@DMKahn8 жыл бұрын
Fabrice- Check out episode 1 in this series, it should help explain it a bit more. The snare samples used in this song were given to me by a friend who makes reggae "Jah Servant". Basically it's a snare dampened with a thin towel, then I EQed and compressed it a little. The other important thing is to gate the snare with a short gate to make it quick and snappy. As far as the toms, I purchased the samples from "loops de la creme"... The Tom pack, check it out. Then I also gated, compressed and EQ'd them to taste. Another thing is how I bus the drums together to an auxiliary track and compressed them as a group.... Just a few dB of gain reduction. Hope this helps! Like I said, check out episode 1 more on drums. Bless

Sounds awesome! Having trouble processing my bass for this kind of sound in the projects I'm working on. Any suggestions?
@DMKahn5 жыл бұрын
Nocean thanks! Is it a real bass guitar you're working with or a VST instrument? Try scooping out the midrange (300hz to 800hz) and adding a bit of 60hz and maybe a bit at 150 or 200hz. Also take away most of the high frequencies. This isn't rock so you don't need much after 1k. Maybe just a hint of string noise, but nothin that sticks out. Hope this helps. Cheers 🤙

@Skiroy7 жыл бұрын
thanks so much. what pups and strings are u using for that bass. it is amazing.
@DMKahn7 жыл бұрын
Skiroy bless up and thanks for the question. My bass is an American Fender Marcus Miller V. It has the active vintage jazz pickups. I don't think strings matter as much as how old the strings are. For reggae you don't need so much of that bright tone from the strings... so I rarely get new strings, I think I've had my bass for 10 years and I might've changed them 3 times. Another thing to consider is how you pluck the string and where you pluck it. Don't use your fingernail cause that will cause a brighter tone instead of a deep on with the round part of your finger rolling off the string as you pluck it. Hope this reply helps. Bless!

Thanks for this respect, are you using the bass via a preamo what is your setup , i am looking at recording my own guitars at the moment, your music is spot on bless
@DMKahn7 жыл бұрын
Gunshow Riddims Productions for the longest time I just used the 1/8" jack into my computer and a small Behringer mixer as my preamp. After that I finally got a cheap Scarlett 2i2 interface and used its onboard preamps... they work fine as they are decently clean and sterile sounding. I recently got a UA LA610 channel strip and it has definitely brought the fidelity and vibe of my recordings on the way in. But all of that to say, you don't need anything super special... there's a lot of good plug ins for free at your disposal to make the guitar sound proper. I particularly love Steven Slate's everything bundle. It comes with a great guitar amp simulator

What if we use a keyboard for the bass line?
@DMKahn7 жыл бұрын
eksempler l thanks for your question. The same "rules" would apply as far as swing and vibe... just make sure you play it "right". Try not to use any quantizing... a little is OK but don't just automatically snap to the grid. Try to have the humanness shine through. Check out my other tutorial on Logic... I use a synth bass on that tutorial. Bless!

Why do some producers put the drums on the same track? I put the HH on track 1, the kick drum on track 2 etc. Could you shed some light on this one for me?

There’s a million ways to skin a cat. I’m with you, I like routing my tracks separate so I can process them on the single track level, but then I route them all to a single track to glue them together . Hope that makes sense brother
