Someone wrote me asking if I could write a song about a woman who’s strong and crushing it but also wants to fall in love - which sparked all these memories from different conversations I’ve had in my life. All of them with ambitious women who had this tension between their ambition and their desire to be loved. There was this sort of shame around it, as if their desire to be with someone romantically conflicted with them seeing themselves as strong or self-sufficient. In the song, I combined all their stories into one - about a girl who paid her way through college and afterward ‘made it’ - culminating in an honest conversation between her and her mom, a mom who essentially tells her that love is a waste of time. That dynamic between her and her mom also comes from those few women I’ve talked to about this, each of whom had a unique friendship with their moms - a dance of expectation and encouragement and support and sometimes pressure. Also, I wouldn’t have written it had I not felt the same thing as the character I’m singing about. There’s been a tug-of-war in my heart between my drive to succeed and - wow, even writing this is sort of embarrassing, goodness, see, I definitely wrote this song, haha - and my romantic life. Sometimes pursuing a dream and falling in love can feel mutually exclusive, and I don’t think they have to be. It’s a very specific song, about a very specific feeling, so I know this won’t connect with everyone, but for a handful of people who listen to my stuff I hope it tells part of your story. Any time I hear multiple people tell a similar story or share a similar feeling - that sounds like we’re quietly rhyming together, an instance of us all singing the same song when we think we’re singing alone.

You're amazing man, i was in a low low place in December, and I found New Drugs Freestyle. Audio Inspiration. You've easily climbed to one of my favorite artists/producers, as well as inspire me to better myself and my life, and above all, reignite the spark for producing music FOR MYSELF for the first time in yers.. TY

I love the fact that you've touched on the fact that a lot of parents project their negative experiences onto their children - this is unfortunately an issue that happens a lot and acknowledging it helps those that have gone through this to break the cycle - thank you, Kai 💕

Can definitely relate to the feelings of this one! Not so much as a lover but more succeeding in one area of life only to forgo another. 16 yrs of marriage to a soldier, I have my lover, but I’m still lonely a lot of times. I gave up a career, and as strongly independent I am, I’ve struggled, just as these ladies have in love. Don’t get me wrong I’m happily married! It not weakness to yearn for something like love or a passion, just patience. Still a great one Kai!! ❤

This song speaks to me. My Dad left my Mom when I was 13 years old... Unfortunately, she was supper bitter and told me to stay single forever b/c men where evil... I ranway from her when I was 18 years old & decided I love love. All facets of it, good & bad.
