Nice to see Capt. Mauser (speak Muuser) who was for years my neighbor whilst living in Kloten in the '70s and 80's.I loved the Convair 990-Coronado one of the fastest aircraft ever besides the supersonic ones One of the most exciting approaches was always Hong Kong. Only a selected few Swissair Captains had the clearance for HKG.

The film looks more like it was shot in the early 1960s at the latest, since at 8.48 it flies over a group of petrol silos on the shore. That is the site of what is Mei Foo Sun Cheun today, a residential development that was completed in 1965.

Brilliant … I notice that during the simulator emergency depressurisation exercise the Captain closes the thrust levers and then lowers the undercarriage. This was presumably to maximise the rate of descent to a safe altitude and was also a technique we used on the faster Trident. Other advantages we possessed were higher fuel consumption, louder noise, more inadequate seating and of course the ‘Ground Gripper’s’ famous extended take off run … Another eye opener was the amazing visibility as the 990 crossed abeam Green Island and the smooth harbour waters. In the several dozen CC 13 let downs I made over the years we groped our way up the harbour from landmark to landmark praying that another rain squall would not disrupt the approach and make us late home for tea …

The Convair 990 has always been my favorite jet airliner and I guess this is as close as I'll ever get to flying in one. I did visit the one in the Swiss Transport Museum some 25 years ago. The cabin is (or was) open to the public and you could easily see into the cockpit. Too bad the 880/990 never caught on as Convair (General Dynamics these days) hasn't built another airliner since. I also got a lot of riding time in a C-131D (a cockpit ride one time) of the USAF plus some Navy examples. And I still remember the F-102, F-106 and the B-58, all awesome flying machines. And I also loved the DC-8 Super Sixty series, which Uncle Sam let me ride on from time to time.
@Disques13Swing7 жыл бұрын
The name 'Coronado' comes from an island in San Diego Bay, quite close to the Convair plant that built the 2/3/440 series of propliners and the 880/990 series of jetliners.

well it was a faulty construction, with only 5 seats in the economy row.....so it was not efficient, compared to a dc-8 or B707- they stuck with the narrower body for speed...

Gute, alte Fliegerzeiten.

@Gracely24612 жыл бұрын
Thanks for posting the video! It brings back a lot of memories. Just a few things for clarification... 1. This video was probably shot in the late 60s. 2. The approach in the video is not the 13 IGS approach. IGS did not exist at that time. 3. The approach was the 13 NDB approach. The aircraft flew over Cheung Chau (CC), which has/had a NDB. Also, the video showed the ADF needle rotated 180 degrees after passing CC.
