To be fair, it was slow and expensive for individual people, but there were T1 and T3 connections that companies were able to afford with the bandwidth required to theoretically make calls over the internet. Those connections costed thousands a month, and most companies would lease fractions of T1 connections, but a dedicated T1/t3 could handle the bandwidth. Most individuals had either dial-up or ISDN, so that sort of thing was out of the question, though I’ve spoken with people who actually had T1 in their homes back in the day.

If anyone else has trouble following "An online argument": Polka argues that slang tends to change over time, with old terms falling out of use to be replaced with new ones--especially when it comes to tech slang. Marine tries to bring up cases where the *first example* of a slang term sticks indefinitely, even when the specific reference becomes dated. 1:18 -- Marine brings up "sha me" (see TL notes), thinking it's a case where the first widely used photo sharing app becomes lasting slang. Polka shoots this down; that term is out of favor too. 1:24 -- At first I didn't get why Polka brings up Yahoo Messenger, but it's meant to counter Marine's main premise. If the first app to let you do something becomes the basis for the relevant slang, why wouldn't Messenger be the word, since Messenger predates Skype? 1:33 -- Marine says this isn't a good counterexample because unlike 写メール or Skype, Messenger didn't catch on for making calls. It may have been first, technically, but in practice it wasn't used widely enough to become slang. 2:00 -- Polka pulls some rhetorical trickery here. She tries to demonstrate that Marine is contradicting herself, because the only people who'd complain about Messenger being unusable would still be on the internet, so obviously the internet itself wasn't prohibitively expensive. That doesn't actually counter Marine's point, though, because it's completely possible for bandwidth to be good enough for text griping, but not good enough for quality voice connections; and either way, it doesn't speak to the question of whether Messenger was ever popular enough to enter the conversation as slang for voice chat. Unfortunately, Marine is too flustered by now to notice the misdirection, and instead thinks Polka is making an unfair demand for data on e.g. Messenger's lack of market penetration. tl,dr: These two are super clever, and there's a lot of unspoken argument going on! Marine's thesis is weak, but Polka wins in the end mostly by riling Marine up.
