It's time to go back to my roots on this channel with One Piece content. For those that don't know, I plan to do only One Piece videos for the foreseeable future to try and acquire a new base. My Naruto analysis videos were always transient and meant to end with a final video on Sasuke. Now, I am covering another major villain with significant thematic importance. There's a lot about Kaido that goes unnoticed behind his surface status in the story, and I hope this video illuminated some of that for you all. I'm actually of the opinion Kaido's very short flashback is perfect, because it leaves a lot of room for interpretation, which I'm always a big fan of.

Its insane to me that Gear 5 Luffy paradoxically brought hope to Kaido. He finally got the big fight he wanted, right? But then its such a crushing blow. This whole time Kaido decided that the world is beyond change and to plunge everyone (including himself) into a hellish war, but then he suddenly got a glance at the fact that- theres IS hope. Its been there the whole time. But now he doesn't get to partake in it. He cemented his fate.

Brilliant. The kaido hate is so undeserved and shallow, I'm glad people see the complex insecurity and self-imprisonment buried within Kaido's character. He became an ultimate powerhouse, a villain, because he never believed anything else was possible. But he found solace in his doubt of that worldview, acting as the gateway for Joyboy.
@mrbubbles6468
@mrbubbles6468 Жыл бұрын
No. He didn’t become like that because nothing else was possible. He became like that because he believed it was the right choice and would get him his fight. Kaido spends the entire arc saying Wano is weak and cowardly and relies too much on Oden. And the good guys agree. And he got the fight. Kaido was not insecure. He was right. And until JB turned up no one wanted to believe him. Even when Oden literally proved everything Kaido stands for, the people of Wano completely missed tge point
@MagnificantSasquatch
@MagnificantSasquatch Жыл бұрын
People act like because Kaido didn’t get a huge flashback that there’s nothing there, but we were learning everything there was to know about him all throughout Wano. Even more than Big Mom, he represented the hopelessness of trying to make a difference. He gave up after his dream of a glorious defeat was taken from him, and decided the world should give up with him. His war would serve no purpose, no direction, but that empty destruction was what he wanted. Hell, the first genuine emotion we see from him is delight at the Supernovas making him feel something again, and _sheer murderous rage_ after Luffy’s several-minute death caused him to relive Oden all over again. Kaido is…well, was, absolutely and inescapably _depressed,_ and he just _didn’t care anymore._ That honestly is one of the most unique antagonists we’ve seen not just in One Piece, but in manga _period._
@milzhere
@milzhere Жыл бұрын
@Mr Bubbles You're missing the point. What brought him to wano in the first place? Why did he choose to be a tyrant? Because that's all he knew his whole life, from being subjugated by the WG. He became a monster because he was VERY aware of the chains holding him down, and saw it as his only path to success. It's all he ever knew. BUT. He's insecure about his own worldview. There's a shred of doubt. That's the whole point in waiting for joyboy. He knew he couldn't be joyboy, so he waits and prays that joyboy exist, as the one to prove to him that the world can change. He contributed his overwhelming strength as a test for joyboy, and saw that as the most "good" he could do, the most he could contribute to overthrowing the system.

@@MagnificantSasquatch Yep. But when we're the few times we saw him truly happy? Every time luffy got up and came back to fight him. Even saying post-G5: "Thank you. I didn't want it to end like that." Luffy quite literally brought him joy with their fight.

Kaido was a great villain with a great personality and great potential. I wish Oda focused on the several key players of Wano and gave them as much time and attention as he gave Momonosuke's and Oden's stories, because great characters like Kaido deserve to be fleshed out and developed as carefully as Momonosuke was. Momo was an absolute masterclass in character development… I wish my man Kaido got the same treatment. Sometimes it feels like Oda's just trying to stuff too many people, things, and events into his longer arcs, and most of them end up never getting enough attention as he rushes through the story. Like Yamato, who feels more like a rough outline of a character than an actual person. I love Yams, but baby deserved to be developed properly, and so did Yams' dad.

since ive discovered the op community online recently ive noticed that op fans are weird in that they overanalyze things that are presented clearly but then skip over things that are subtle and should be analyzed, they are so quick to judge character, arc moment by moment and cant let the story reveal itself and come to them, ive noticed that honestly it seems sometimes that Oda has to spoon feed them as they cant read between the lines and things have to go they way they think it should go or expect it to go or they get all disappointed and shit, i feel for a lot of the fans it became less about experiencing the story being told and more about what they want or think should happen, theories and headcannons. just my opinion doe.

I typically hate saying anything along the lines of “if you didn’t like it, you didn’t get it,” but the horrible reaction Kaido’s received could only be explained this way. Animated media has a bad habit of spelling out themes and motivations, and the moment Oda dips his toes into some more complex, subtle writing, it explodes in his face thanks to a fanbase which can’t appreciate his evolving style, so used to typical anime writing tropes.

One thing I loved about his fight with Luffy, especially during his transformation in gear 5, is the fact that he give to him the joy to fight, to feel something, after so many years. He was surely bored and depressed and an alcohol addicted before his fight for Rufy, and you can see it by the fact that he didn't even bothered anymore to resolve Wano internal conflicts and he preferred remain to Onigashima to do nothing. Luffy gave him joy and fun to fight again, becoming an actual threat for him, and giving to Kaido the honorable warrior defeat he always wanted. Luffy give joy even to his greatest opponent until now and that's simply incredible.

I just realized something. Eren and Kaido are pretty similar. Both had visions of freedom, but both had that vision crushed by reality. For Eren it was the realization that more enemies lurked past beyond the ocean, despite achieving a childhood dream of seeing the sea, he only saw the pain to come from beyond those waters. Kaido's spirit was crushed from his epiphany that the world cannot change, that history has been the same, and that hope for a better one was lost. So what did these two end up doing? Working towards the demise of their world. One in absolute rage, rancor, and fury at the injustices of the world that aimed to end those he loves and rob their freedom, whilst the other sought to bring this miserable world and himself to an end, to strive for the consolation prize of being someone remembered as the strongest. Armin could still find joy in seeing the ocean, Eren could no longer after seeing the epiphany when he kissed Historia's hand. Luffy still had his bright optimism and romantic dreams for the world despite the pain and sorrow he has witnessed and has experienced himself. Kaido couldn't dream anymore, the harsh realities stifling his ability to see beyond what could be.

I will never understand why Kaido gets so much hate from the community. People cite that it's because of his short, lackluster backstory but even if he had that, people would still find something to complain about. Kaido is a very well-written character and, thematically, the perfect person to clash with Luffy. Their fight is about strength just as much as it's about ideals. There are many layers to Kaido's character but sadly a lot of people struggle with reading comprehension, apparently. Great video and thanks for putting respect on Kaido's name!

I don't hate him, it just feels a litle weird he's strong just for the sake of it but there's almost nothing aside from that. I mean, every major villiain that has a real impact on the story are somewhat related to wanting the one piece or reign over something, so we can't say kaido has no ambition. Maybe wano should have explored other points than this tanky creature that is soo bad and that's the reason he must be defeated. This has nothing to do with a backstory or something, just poor storytelling for a character that was hyped through a lot of years. Not a villian but take for example whitebeard, just a few scenes before we could really know the character that, same as kaido, was sold as stronger than anyone but everyone remember him (don't come at me saying that it was because of marineford, I remember Oda said wano was going to be superior to it).

This video make me realize , for kaidou everything is a conflict , a battle to be win. His relationship with the crew os about stregth and power nothing more, relationship with his Son, and everyone is his battle to win.

Your choice of mysic is fantastic. You really know how to add weight to your narration. W man. It's always pleasant to see One Piece discussion devoid of power-scaling's goofiness.

Kaido is great example of reader failure to understand kaido the character . Many reader were more upset about the length of his Backstory. Then trying to understand what the backstory said about kaidos character. Great video.
