This is a movie reaction to my first time watching Solo: A Star Wars Story, released in 2018 and directed by Ron Howard. I absolutely loved getting some backstory on Han Solo, Chewbacca, and Lando Calrissian! While this movie doesn't rank anywhere near the top out of all the Star Wars films, I still had a great time. Make sure to stick around to the end of this video for my full thoughts and review and thank you so much for watching!
🚀 WHY STAR WARS?
I was asked to film myself watching these movies after starting my first playthrough of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic on my Twitch channel a few months ago (which is still ongoing as of the upload date of this video).

Thanks for watching my reaction to Solo! What a fun movie. Up next is Rogue One, followed by Episodes 7-9. And for the 250 of you that are going to comment "Please watch Clone Wars!"... yes, I will be starting that when I've finished the movies. 😊 Individual episode reactions are going to be Patreon-exclusives and then for KZbin I will create and upload overall season thoughts & reaction highlights. I'll be announcing when they're going to start over on Patreon, as I'm going to be launching a super awesome special offer. 👀 So stay tuned. Excited to dive into that. That being said, I'm also looking forward to getting into some other movies outside of the Star Wars franchise (which is why TCW is going to be for Patrons). patreon.com/kaiielle ✨ Peep other FAQ: kaiielle.com/faq

Hi Kaiielle! Great reaction as per usual! Now that you've seen the movie and you've touched on the Han Solo casting for the movie, you might want to take a look at the Deep fake video for Solo that Shamook made using young Harrison Ford's face (Shamook got hired by Lucasfilm to work with them not that long ago by the way), that video really makes you appreciate Alden Ehrenreich so much more, I mean, he's a very convincing Han/Harrison and he's got the facial expressions, gestures, manerisms down, if it really was released with Harrison Ford's face, you wouldn't believe it wasn't him. That was just it and thank you so very much for the video, have a nice rest of your day!!!

And I absolutely love all the OT music that perfectly links this to the OT. The Imperial March when the voice said "Join the Empire" and other stuff after Han escaped through the gate and shortly during the battle where Beckett was first introduced, the music from ANH where Luke and Han were fighting the 4 TIE fighters, the music when Han Leia and C-3PO were out running (flying) the TIEs in the asteroid field, and Duel of the Fates, twice, when Maul was introduced at the end. And when Han shot Beckett, Beckett was about to shoot Han to see if he was paying attention, and that was put in there to prove Han is aware of people around him now, but I also agree where I think it's a callback to ANH where the ongoing meme of "Han shot first" is still circulating in the world.

I think the episode 8 hate is just a small segment of fans that is very loud on the internet. The movie was great, and since it made millions upon millions, it seems that lots of others agree. Unless everyone was hating it and just seeing it multiple times to write down all of their objections that they'd go in and type on their message boards.

In tone, "Solo" is very much like the original "Star Wars" was in 1977: a fast-paced, fun adventure. And, thus far, it's the closest we've gotten to a movie version of the beloved Han Solo novels published between the release of "Star Wars" and TESB. It's my favorite of the Disney era, and one of my favorites overall.

So that was indeed Darth Maul at the end. The Clone Wars is of course the answer lol Since Rogue One Star Wars has really started to dive into characters or story arcs from the shows such as The Clone Wars ands Rebels. For one they do an amazing job at introducing these characters for people like yourself who have never watched the shows so it's not a most watch thing only if you want to know the backstory behind characters such as Maul and how he lived. Only part of Star Wars media i recommend watching Clone War's for is Season 2 of The Mandalorian. But everything from the Sequels to even Season 1 of Mando it's 100% fine to have zero knowledge of the events of the Clone Wars. Overall not a big Solo fan compared to Rogue One which i loved. Excited for your Rogue One reaction this was the first Star Wars spin off film coming out a year after The Force Awakens a really hype time for Star Wars. Episode III: Revenge of the Sith - 19 BBY Solo: A Star Wars Story - 13-10 BBY Rogue One: A Star Wars Story - 0 BBY Solo takes place around 5 to 9 years after Revenge of the Sith and the formation of the Empire and a good 10 years before we see Han again in A New Hope so pretty early Empire stuff.

Greetings! So… I stumbled onto this thanks to the Revan revealed video showing up on my feed yesterday. 24 hours and seven videos later (yeah, didn’t get much work done today. Shocking, I know), was proud to add my name to the Patreon support and it feels so wonderful to be reminded by a new arrival why I love Star Wars so much. Some may gatekeep, I choose to sit by the side of the road and whenever I see someone new walking the path, I smile. Because they have discovered what I have loved from my earliest memories and, thanks to them and you, it will continue after I am gone. Now, to Solo - I think the movie is underrated myself. It’s pretty entertaining and wonderful to see new actors in familiar roles. Personally, I’m equally delighted Emilia Clarke is getting work that gets her out of Daenerys’s shadow. Not a knock on Thrones or her, you just fear the typecast, ya know? Truth is, IMHO, I think Solo actually improves after you have seen Clone Wars and Rebels. You’ll see what I mean when you get there. So, that’s it. Happy to have seen, happy to be aboard and… well, as a wise Jedi once said “You have taken your first steps into a larger world.”

My read of Qi'ra is that she is firmly in the pirate life and everything else is secondary. Whether out of fear for her life or newfound ambition, idk. Like you said we don't get much on her cuz she's just playing the femme fatale role here. My read of it seeing this a second time here is that she clearly does still have feelings for Han so she was hoping she could work it out that she could kill Dryden (love his half cape btw) to spare Han but if he doesn't stand directly behind her to give her that opportunity, I think she might reluctantly kill Han. Pretty sure they planned a sequel, and yeah probably dropped after how this did. They may circle round to it later with a Lando centric movie? People LOVED his performance.

To find out more of Q'ira, read Most Wanted. Also, there's another upcoming novel later this year. Also, there's a lot of stories told in the comicbooks of the last 3 years starting with The War of The Bounty Hunters crossover, continuing into the Crimson Reign crossover, and just recently wrapping up the Hidden Empire crossover. All of these comicbooks are set between Episodes V and VI. The novels are either before Solo, or during Solo during the time not covered. I haven't read Most Wanted yet, but her picture's on the cover with Han, but this may focus more on him than her, but the novel coming out later this year (by E. K. Johnston) is supposed to be about Dryden Voss pulling Q'ira off of Corellia. There's also a comicbook series of Han called Imperial Cadet, one with Lando: Double or Nothing, another of an older Lando (original trilogy time) just called Lando, an original trilogy time one called Han Solo, and a one-shot called Beckett. There may be one for Chewie in Canon, but I'm not certain as I know there's one in Legends for Chewbacca. And they're wrapping up the story told in the Han Solo and Chewbacca comicbook series soon if not already done. So lots of reading available to you, along with the Solo novelization. Happy reading, and May The Force Be With You!

I think this was the best SW spin-off movie. It probably feels the most detached from the other movies, but in a good way....the same way Star Trek Deep Space 9 feels removed from other Star Trek shows, which gives it a unique flavor. This feels like a very different side of the Star Wars universe than what we're used to seeing, and at a time when the series was starting to feel a little overplayed, I found that very welcome. I actually don't know anyone who saw this movie in theaters who didn't like it, so I was very surprised to hear that it bombed, but I think it was basically because a lot of people just weren't even willing to give it a chance, after The Last Jedi.

If that movie had been made in the 70s, people would be saying it was one of the best Star Wars movies ever. The problem is that Star Wars fandom can be very toxic, and I don't like it. This movie in particular had many production problems, including a change of director (the original duo was released due to "creative differences" with Disney, and word in the street says that their original plan was for a full-on comedy instead of an action movie with comic reliefs), but in the end it delivered a good background for the character we learned to love. However, I read an idea some time ago on Twitter that I would pay real money to happen: a Lando series. The episodes would start with Billy Dee Williams at a sabacc game, then when he started telling a story of his past adventures Donald Glover would come to screen. I know it's not gonna happen, but I'd like to think that this could work. :)

46:43 you are actually watching it in the correct order cause Solo is before Rogue One. Enfys Nest talks about a character that’s in Rogue One and Rogue One goes right into Episode 4. A couple things the costume Beckett wears to get into the Kessel mines was the same costume Lando wore at Jabba’s palace in Episode 6. Also the cape Qi’ra tries on in Lando’s closet is the same one that Lando wears in Episode 5. This is also the first movie that we learn how old Chewy really is which would explain why Yoda had such a good relationship with the Wookies seeing how they both have long lifespans. Apparently if Lucasfilm hadn’t put Ron Howard as director we would’ve gotten a very different movie. Lord & Miller was going a different way from what Lucasfilm wanted and wouldn’t budge. The one good thing they did was cast Alden Ehnrenreich as Han cause he was great as Han. He even got praise from Harrison Ford who skipped the premiere so as he put it “Alden could have his night”. He didn’t want to steal any attention from Alden which he probably wouldn’t have much. The press would’ve probably wanted photos of the two and asked them questions about each other.

As a kid I loved the Han Solo trilogy of books. They're called The Paradise Snare, The Hutt Gambit and Rebel Dawn. They had three books to flesh out Han's backstory and it was awesome! It had a very different version of the Kessel run. Han working for Jabba The Hutt and a bunch of cool stuff I won't spoil. So for me that will always be my favorite back story for Han Solo and Chewbacca. However as an alternate universe story this film is dope as hell! Honestly I'm sad it flopped because I'd definitely be down to see more adventures of young Han Solo and Chewbacca. Also Lando absolutely steals the show in this film! If my younger self saw this film it would blow their mind! I definitely think the end of this is a Han shot first reference. In the original 1977 version of A New Hope Han shoots Greedo before Greedo even has a chance to shoot. Speaking of that... I wish they'd release all of the different the versions of Star Wars. My favorite version is the 1997 special editions Because my Dad took me to see them in the theater and i had the VHS box set growing up. I'd love to be able to see that version again. I feel like people would be much less upset about the changes if every version was readily available. And we probably wouldn't still be fighting about who shot first. My only big complaint about this film is Qi'ra. Maybe this is because of the Original trilogy and the EU books but I love Han and Leia together. I have no interest in seeing Han with someone else especially when I know it's not gonna work out. In most of this film Qi'ra is there as Han's love interest and we don't get to know her or really see her outside of that relationship. That kinda sucks because I think she could have been an awesome character maybe she still will be. I mean they were clearly setting something up with her and Darth Maul. However given that this film was a collosal flop... I don't know anything will come of that sadly. It was awesome to see Maul again though! Especially since they got the original actor Ray Park alongside Sam Witwer providing the voice! Also I agree L3 is kind of annoying... However the way droids are treated within the Star Wars universe was always this horrible unspoken thing. It was kinda cool seeing it actually get called out for once.

Any romance Han has is obviously doomed to failure until he finds Leia. The Solo trilogy played this up to the hilt, giving him numerous flings, the most serious relationship being with Bria Tharen, who eventually betrays him in order to take treasure they'd stolen to fund the Rebel Alliance. This sours Han badly on the idea of fighting for a cause. Qi'ra definitely has some shades of Bria in her, but not nearly so altruistic.

I didn't even know there was another SOLO trilogy of books. When you mentioned PARADISE SNARE, HUTT GAMBIT, REBEL DAWN, I was like "what?" I read, multiple times, HAN SOLO AT STARS END, HAN SOLO'S REVENGE, and HAN SOLO AND THE LOST LEGACY as a kid and really enjoyed them. They came out in 1979-80. There was also a LANDO trilogy of books that came out not too long after that that I also enjoyed. I probably still have all those . . . somewhere.

Very unpopular opinion: I think Han Solo is a slightly overrated character in Star Wars. He's not as complex as Luke or Anakin. He has depth, but not as much. I think he kind of got played for laughs by the time of ep 6. He's good fun though- works well for a movie like this :)

I had a lot of doubts going in to Solo but I was happily surprised by how much fun it was. I liked the callbacks though there were probably more than was needed for one movie. I just had a good time and that’s kinda the point of it. Fwiw, I’ve been a fan of Star Wars since 1977 and I love Ep. 8 and consider it my favorite of the sequels. I still really don’t get all of the hate for it. So many people think their idea of Star Wars is better but I think RJ did a fantastic job. I wish he could’ve done Ep.9 as well.

I really enjoyed Solo. It's ... different, but in a good way! And the more I watch it, the more I like it. I agree that Alden Ehrenreich did an excellent job. And it must have been very difficult, not only to catch some of Harrison's mimics, but to tackle that specific role. Han Solo is so iconic that anyone trying to portray him is bound to get some backlash. Ehrenreich was great!

This is in the top 3 Star wars movies along with Rogue One for me. Enfys Nest is my favorite in this movie because she's in the begining stages of the Rebel Alliance and I am 100% a Rebel Alliance person, no dark side for me. so this film is set after Episode 3 but before Rogue One and Episode 4: New Hope. Han Solo grew up in what many consider the darkest times...when the Empire were at their peak of strength...no one challenged the Empire in those days...and the mention of Darth Vader was just...a terrifying thing...hardly anyone ever spoke of him. But slowly people were begining to fight back...and the Rebel Alliance and been formed yet...but people were beginning to have ideas of rebellion. in the Clone Wars the Wookies sided with the Republic so once the Empire took over they enslaved the Wookies...kind of sucks for them...but hey at least the wookies took the right side and helped the good side. Crimson Dawn are not to be trusted...no one who stands under their banner is to be trusted...they have links to the underworld...to the dark side...they may not like the Empire...but they get power from wherever they can find it...including similar sources to the Empire star destroyer appears Me: well that's not good :/

I thought this movie was a lot better than the reviews. The only thing I didn't like about Ehrenreich's Solo was his voice. Other than that, he was pretty good. So yeh Beckett was always on the side of himself so that's why he was flip flopping. It seemed to me Qi'ra somehow got into that lifestyle, and it was too hard for her to get out. Then once she killed Dryden and took over that power kept her sucked in. I was surprised you didn't mention Paul Bettany as Dryden. (VISION!!!) Loved Chewie, Lando, the Millennium Falcon!! Loved the mention of doing the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs! (not if you round down budddy!!!🤣) Yeah I would say Han shooting first was a nod to him shooting first in A New Hope. He learned!! Loved Han winning the Falcon from Lando "fair and square" a nod to when they first meet in The Empire Strikes Back. All in all it was a fun movie and I enjoyed it. Once you put the Star Wars logo on a movie the expectations go through the roof! Is it my favorite no, is it the worst, again no. I put it in front of Ep 2 and 8 any and every day. Darth Maul wasn't supposed to be the villain at the end of the movie it was supposed to be Prince Xisor from an old Legends storyline Xisor was a Falleen who ran the Black Sun organization which Crimson Dawn was based on. When ron Howard asked who Prince Xisor was the entire production staff was too stupid to look him up on wookiepedia to find his image or any background to develop the character. So Darth Maul was a late half-assed addition that luckily worked out. Don't hold your breath for an on screen follow up, especially after ray Park's offscreen behaviour since by posting revenge porn of his wife online.

Having grown up with the extended universe and being aware of all the intricacies and elements of the original Han backstory and the omission of some bits of it, this movie was not what I wanted it to be. Was it bad? No, it would have been a great star wars film if it wasn't retconning of Hans origin story, especially as Disney decanonised the whole of the extended universe and stopped us ever seeing the possibility of movies from one of the most amazing series in all of the star wars universe, that being the x-wing books written by the brilliant Michael A. Stackpole. When they announced rogue one, so many fans were so excited that it was the start of something that it turned out not to be. Casting was great, story was shit, acting was a little all over the place.

Ive been loving these star wars reactions, and I'd just like to make a suggestion for when you watch the clone wars. While the later seasons are absolutely fucking brilliant, the first 2-3 seasons are definitely a "kids" show and can kind of drag. I'm not saying you shouldn't watch them, but it might be best to maybe only record the important episodes from those first couple seasons (which I'm sure someone from your patreon or discord might be able to help decide). I've just seen a lot of reactors start the clone wars and end up giving up or the series fizzling out because it really is a LOT of work to do for some of these 3-4 episode arcs that are pretty much filler in the grand scheme of the series. Of course I will be watching either way, but I just don't want you to get burnt out putting in so much effort for some of those worse/less-important episodes.

Great reaction! The reason it flopped was because of the backlash the sequels received and so the aftershocks of disappointment fell on Solo, unfortunately and unfairly. Understandably, the people had a very sour taste in their mouths after the way the sequel trilogy was made and handled, story script and development wise. No hate towards the actors, they're amazing people. I personally am a very passionate SW fan, I did not like the sequel trilogy that Diseny made, but I'm not a hateful zealot that some of these fans are and quite sadly, imo, to me they seem very hateful and destructive and I will never associate with such people. This movie, however, stands strong alone, apart from the trilogies, as an origin story and I will always support the want for Solo 2. It is debatable, that this movie was necessary. It's not adding anything major to the Skywalker saga or its story, but personally, I quite enjoyed it nonetheless - its fun and did great by exploring the orign stories for Han and Lando as well as bringing in new and interesting characters. It gave us a tad bit more Maul and what he's been up to since the Clone Wars { running Crimson Dawn }. Disney did really well with this one and I hope they continue to. Solo doesn't need to contribute to the "main" saga that much, just keep it fun. Ever since the movie was announced, already then I understood and expected it to be its own thing. Solo 2-3 can definitely continue to tell more stories up until A New Hope, more stuff about Q'ira and Maul. To me those two are very intriguing and would love to know what those two are up to and I'd like to see Han and Chewie run into them and get into trouble - would be so rad. Here's hoping.

This movie is enjoyable enough, the main issue I have with it is being a prequel movie is I never had any real sense of danger in the action scenes. Like no matter how intense an action scene gets Han, Chewie and Lando CANNOT die. I'm pretty sure they were going to try and make more movies but the box office for this movie was very tepid and Disney definitely took a financial loss on this. Even though the movie is OK I know myself and many others think its main problem was that The Last Jedi had come out only a few months prior and did a lot of damage to fan confidence that Disney knew what it was doing with Star Wars.

I thought this film was quite fun. It wasn't anything special, but I thought it was a good, fun sci-fi action flick. I think in part the movie flopped as hard as it did for reasons unrelated to its content. Star Wars 8 had come out a few months prior and proved to be very divisive, there was hardly any marketing for solo, there were rumors of production issues, and honestly, at that point, people were a bit star-warsed out after the initial barrage of new movies. In addition, there was a lot of skepticism in regards to Han's recasting. All this didn't exactly encourage people to go to the movies to see this one.

I have just assumed that since the Darth Maul bit was intertwined with Clone Wars, that maybe so was Crimson Dawn and all of Qira's past, and you see storylines from these elements there. However I haven't seen the show yet so I can't say if that's right or wrong. I disagree, Ehrenreich did a valiant attempt but wasn't convincing. But DonGlover is as suave and smooth as Billy Dee himself. Overall it got a bad rap. All of the member-berries made the movie annoying (I really didn't care what a Kessel Run was, or how they explained away George's gaffe with time and distance, or yet another drop in of Jabba and Tattooine). But the movie as a nice heist job with the criminal boss intrigue was great. As you said, Woody's character was very intriguing.

So I've heard that people saw in the OT that Han and Lando may have had a little bit of A Thing in their past and a writer for this movie said that he viewed Lando as pansexual and while Disney won't affirm that as canon, its in the movie as opposed to just saying after the fact that Dumbledore is gay but it wasn't in the books anywhere. Flirting with Han and clearly there was some kind of Thing with L3. So I think that's good actually. As far as L3, I haven't seen all Star Wars content certainly but this is the only thing that I know of that so directly addresses droid sentience and its actually a huge problem for the universe. Like they are sentient persons who are enslaved. The problem is that this movie takes that and mainly uses it for comedic relief which is not great. But yeah given that droids are sentient and that provides an opportunity to give representation to a group that rarely gets any, I think that's good.

you need to watch star wars the clone wars, star wars rebels, The mandalorian, and the book of boba fett. In that order. And you can watch the sequels whenever. Trust me this is the ideal order to watch the rest of the canon star wars material. The clone wars and rebels may be animated series but they have some of the best star wars content out there. especially the clone wars.

@@kaiielle Hear me out here. Still I must urge you to reconsider and watch the clone wars before the kenobi series at least. There's a good reason for that. You may think you understand obi wan but there is so much the clone wars shows you that will be valuable to know for his series. The same for rebels with characters it introduces. I'm just afraid you'll be lost on certain story details and who certain characters are. And trust me as a hardcore star wars fan that had seen countless peoples reactions to the series out of order you will get confused or not shocked by certain unexpected events because you wouldn't have the knowledge of what has already occurred in the shows. I know what I said is a mouthful but it's the truth. Of course it's still up to you. The choice must be yours.

IMO Solo and Rogue One are the only 2 films that feel like they take place in the same universe as the OT. The prequels and sequels all have a different vibe to them. It was also refreshing to see stories that arent preoccupied with the Skywalkers.
