Normal Person: *Buys an axe* AKB: YOU FOOL! You've committed one of the classic blunders! Another awesome video and very much appreciated. Sorry to hear you ran into some issues with the buffalo horn, out of all our handle materials while it is the hardest it's also the most prone to cracking and shrinking. When you buy Horn in Nepal, the condition of the horn is often a bit of a crap shoot. It might be horn that's had time to dry and age properly for a few years or it might only have been cut off the animal a month or two ago. If the horn is aged then when it's pinned and glued it holds form just like the HI blade shown but if it's green then it dries, shrinks and warps over time. This causes it to pull away from the tang and delaminate in some places and not in others. It also causes it to shrink away from the edges of the tang as it loses moisture and mass. Here's a picture of a knife of mine after 5 years of hard use. As you can see the horn has also pulled away, with the tang also exposing a little. tinyurl.com/y28kt4mg The guard on the scourge is on the limit of what the material can handle, hence the failure in this circumstance but I'm sure that once you've trimmed down the guard and filed the exposed tang it will hold up just fine for years to come. It goes without saying that this won't affect the warranty on the rest of the blade. These issues with Nepalese horn and rosewood supply are a big reason why we've been working so hard to get stacked leather and micarta handles available. There's only so much we can do with these organic materials. Whether we limit this design to the more advanced materials or we alter the guard to cope with the traditional materials is something that's still undecided. What do you guys think? To finish, some photos of a recent scourge anniversary with orange handmade micarta. tinyurl.com/y6trlurp tinyurl.com/y5b32jdg Thanks a bunch and stay rad, Andrew and the team at Kailash Blades

I have an original Scourge from KHHI from back when Andrew first designed it and although heavy I love that blade! I also own two of the more traditional khukuri that they make with the hidden tang, an 8" and a 10". All three have rosewood handles and all three have been used a lot to process wood over the years. No complaints at all.

Your scourge would be getting on in years now! What do you think- does it get better with age like a fine wine? Or get worse with age like a cheap beer
@turtlewolfpack60614 жыл бұрын
@@kailashblades it is still going strong after more than a few adventures! I would definitely rate mine a good bottle of wine! I still think the handle is one of the best designs available as well. If the bloody economy was better and work would pick up I would certainly buy another just because.

Perfect! Now I can finally buy a fixed blade for my tactical bug out bag! I mean I have nothing but a shotgun, shot shells, slugs and this knife. But if the tactical community has taught me anything its not about survival its about looking cool and having cool weapons to never really use in a truly tactical way. Because real tactical stuff is scary, yo.

It's interesting what a traditional kukri has morphed into . A handle with a guard and zero chance of overgrip to perform fine work . The ogive blade was excellent with the creation of the Kopis and later variants . Some kind of crazy shit happened to the engineering and geometry concept of an ogive shaped blade and its' original purpose . Great review - enough preaching and time for a Heineken and moderately priced cigar . ATB
