KailuaKid I have truly enjoyed your videos of old Hawaii Nei. Whoever filmed those precious times is a Hero in capturing Paradise when it was Paradise. And I "Thank You" . Your choice of music is also excellent. 🤙🏼.

Lived in Kailua-Kona 1964-67. My Father moved us there in '64, wanted to build a small 30 room motel in traditional Hawaiian style but the Island "way" (at that time) involved bribes which he wouldn't pay...so we moved back to the Mainland. My sister played the organ in the Church...we were very active in the Methodist Church there. Hawaiian language was not taught in schools...Hawaiian Pride hadn't taken root yet. I still dream about our concrete house across the road (Kahakai Rd. which was mostly dirt) from the tide pools I used to play in...and warm welcome our family experienced.

Kona Nightingales .....oh how fun ! Well, one of my favorite memories from these "olden dayz" was watching the very handsome local boys swimming out to the cruise-liner and diving for money that the tourists onboard would throw to them...... your video includes Saint Michael's Catholic Church ....awwwwww.....thanx 4 sharing!

No vog in those days, unlike now, when it's constant. The King Kamehameha had just opened when this film was shot. And yeah, the Taniguchi Store in back of the banyan tree. No Kona Hilton yet either (its original name), which changed that coastline view forever.

Look at how empty town is, front street. My dad who grew "up mauka" said that's how downtown used be because not that many people used to go downtown. I asked him about that gas station or whatever it is near where the old Oceanview restaurant used to be & he said he doesn't know. lol But look at the mountains, especially the view from the pier. There's hardly anything! No houses or anything. Well, as a kid who grew up here in Kona in the 80's it was almost like that as well. My how times have changed. ^_^ Also I think that's Kainaliu. Look at how busy it used to be. Not very much. lol Well except on Friday's & the weekends when people used to go to the bowling alley and Ben Franklin store used have the raffle for everyone to win free stuff. After showing this video to my dad he named everything in the video since that's where he grew up. haha. This video definitely gets a like from me. ^_^

That gas station is now an ABC store and a bar. The old Ocean View restaurant was about a hundred feet further south. My Mom and Pops were probably working somewhere around there @ the filming of this

Yeah I was sad to see that place go. So many childhood memories eating there. Used to eat saimin there majority of the time we went there to eat. Either saimin or fried rice. I remember playing with the saimin spoon while waiting for my bowl of saimin to arrive. Then after we finished eating & my parents were paying the bill we used to go to the banyan tree to swing on the vines. lol

Wow Deb, shots of the Tanaguchis, the Banyan tree. I think I even saw the ocean view inn. Plus shot across Kelalakekua bay. I'got some stills of my folks right on the monument which was not alownd at the time. Not sure about putting those on yet. Thanks for a great Montage and addition to us folks that enjoy the beautie of the island much in person anymore. And yes I remember taking off from the old airport on my first trip to Honolulu and then to Arizona from Los Angeles. Will never forget it.

I was only twelve years old myself. They were taken by my father, Dick Helin, who flew over to Kona from Kailua, Oahu so that he could be there for the grand opening of the new restaurant in the second iteration of the King Kamehaeha Hotel. He was the guy who designed and built the restaurant and it was his obligation as a vendor to be there at the opening. Did you note the airplanes flying overhead to land at the airport located then right next door to the Hotel. Crazy, huh? You can see all of the fuel storage tanks located right next to the buildings. Sure glad they moved it out to Hualalai before all of those jet aircraft started to use the field.

It’s worse than you think. If you go downtown, there’s homeless people sleeping on the walls and not a lot of things to do
@aloha4ina4 жыл бұрын
Shadeweb GMD that’s rude, those people are struggling because of the overpopulation inner island. There’s plenty to do, by the way, if you know where to look.
