This fourth installment focuses on The Valley Isle, Maui, the land of birth for my tutu in Wailuku, February 1892, during the reign of Queen Liliuokalani
We recently discovered several vintage 16mm films filmed in old Hawaii. These films were originally taken by an unknown photographer for his own, personal enjoyment while enroute from San Jose to Austrailia in 1940. We purchased them at a garage sale at the house at an old local orchardist. The films were converted to digital by volunteers from the California Pioneers of Santa Clara County using a special telecine processor that allowed us to preserve these historic images at no charge. Mahalo for sharing. As a Maui boy and a former pineapple field and cannery worker, I really missed all the green pineapple fields and the sugar fields that covers the land.

You were born and raised in paradise. I've seen several great paradise destinations but only Maui really can take your breath away with pure beauty. Stuff Walt Disney only wishes he could build for tourist. I'm afraid tourists have ruined Hawaii for the natives. I couldn't imagine how great being born and to live there would be back when it was as it once was. No snakes, no mosquitos, perfect climate. Maybe heaven on Earth. Thanks for sharing it with those of us that really appreciated seeing it. My last lasting thought of Maui was I ate at one of those louous ( spelling? ) and I turned green I believe before I hit the restroom. Two lasting bathroom episodes I remember in 45 years of life. Waiting for bathroom in superdome 1991 and running for bathroom in Maui circa 2006. I will never eat at one of those events again. Lol gnite

This is the most delightful song I have ever heard about Maui. The footage is spectacular, especially the Wailuku River. Every emotion expressed is authentic, like the ohana who show an abundance of aloha.I miss my time spent in Lahaina looking after my dearest friend's daughter, Fiori, and the friends I made at the Lahainaluna worship centre. Bible study was held in Paia and led by a charismatic Maui mother of eight children. The contacts you make on the island are forever faithful.I would like to express my gratitude for my generous landlady, Wanda, who brightened every day with her Japanese/ Hawaiian nutritious wisdom and hospitality.I would be amiss if I did not mention my upstairs neighbours, Brad and Kelly who made a day off so much fun going surfing and upcountry muddy monster truck discovery. For me, Lahaina will always be my second home.Thank you friends for blessing my life so spiritually❤Mahalo❤

So did my tutu on my mother's side. She grew up in Waikapu in a little home just outside St Anthony's Church area... February 1892. My g-grandfather worked as the assistant mgr/postmaster at the Wailuku Hardware Store.

I miss all the pineapple and sugarcane fields. Never should have abandoned those. My landlord worked the pineapple fields and used to bring home hybrid pineapples.

My Tutu on my mother's side was born in Wailuku in February 1892 during the monarchy, She thought it had already changed way too much back in 1960. I guess it's all relative to the date of your first recollections. It is amazing footage, though. Thanks for the kind words.

Maui's population then was higher than it was in 1970. Tens of thousands left during the war, and meanwhile, 100,000 Marines were based there. Maui was very industrious with hardly any tourism then. The plantation workers were paid almost slave wages until unionization in the late 40s.

Maui and Hawaii were big time paradises back then but not any more. Oahu way over developed with hirises and the rat race of Western civilization. The old time Hawaiians had it right but 21st century man has it all wrong and were all paying a heavy price!!😮😢😢😢😮
