This is the type of horror we need more of, not just in anime but also film. No ridicules jump scares,or gallons of blood and body parts. Some thing supernatural with a touch of human sin.

I was lucky enough to stumble onto this back in the day. I enjoyed the OVA so much that it became one of the few series where I went on to read the books too. Really unique series. Honestly, this is one that could be rebooted/remade today and it would barely even need to be changed. The stories hold up.
@andrejg4136 Жыл бұрын
Much like the Twilight Zone, you'd only need to update the framing and the background setting. The stories at their core speak to human morality, and that's something we going around the block with since we first formed complex society.

With all the talk of the writing in this anime, I just want to add that the writer of this adaptation being the one and only Yasuhiro Imagawa. As in G Gundam, Giant Robo, writer of Berserk '97 Imagawa. No wonder it was adapted so well

Where did you find a mention to Apple Mystery Monthly as the magazine serializing the original manga? Wiki says it was Missy Comics DX which is hard to research in the west and other sites say it was Horror M which would make more sense since it was a horror shoujo/josei magazine competing with Nemuki, where Shin would be later serialized. For some reasson this contradiction seems super interesting to me.

Not quite since the pets do fulfill the stated desires of the purchaser. The knife-twist comes in the fact that it's clear the desires are either misaimed or downright ruinous. Such as the old couple not being able to properly let go of their now deceased daughter, especially the mother.

Owned a bit of both types for a while, I will say until now I hadn't heard the Japanese dub, I managed to view up to the manga referrence to a notable cooking cuisine the Count treated the Detective to whom couldn't tell it apart from meat, C. Dee explained something real from mainland China in a certain province specializing non animal imitation, some stuff is tasty, but I'll say it's an advance cooking method along with some exclusive ingredients.

Is the ‘Dangerous Petshop’ a trope of the Far East? Or is a coincidence? Gremlins does predate this and it’s Manga, still I remember reading Chinese Detective novels that have hints of both and predate them by a couple of centuries. Thanks for sharing, and as always, Well Done 🦇 Have a Happy Halloween 🎃

I think it’s because of the setting. New York is where the show/manga takes place and there is no ‘Japan town’ there. Chinese people immigrated to America in big numbers several times. (Japan didn’t open its boarders till 1853) A lot of those immigrants liked to settle down with peeps who spoke the same language and ate the same food. Let’s not forget that people were suuuuuper racist back then, so a lot of the Appeal of china town was protection in numbers.

I really like the gothic aesthetic. It's a shame pretty much only the female targeted animes seem to use it since their types of stories and or homoerotic writing very rarely gets me interested. This one, black butler and another one I don't remember the name of. I don't know what demographic empire of corpses is geared towards though.

Pet Shop of Horrors is a very well known and much loved manga. I read it this year and ultimately hated it. Not for the stories, and certainly not for the art, certainly a very stylish manga, but for the setting. How does an author think up so many surreal and symbolic fairy tales, and decide to put them in the modern day, in a big city inundated with science and technology? How do you write a greek tragedy and set it in a modern day Middle eastern monarchy, when the setting you have is realistic enough for people to be bothered by no such monarchy existing in reality? And each of the stories breaks the outward realism of the world further, with new fascinating impossible creatures that are confronted by the real world of science and reason for there to be no conclusion. The impossible demonstrably exists yet science and daily life are unaffected. You could see them as unconnected individual stories so whatever change these impossible things cause in the world are simply outside our scope , but the characters have a continuing evolution, events and interactions that mark the passage of time. These characters live in the Twilight Zone, and they hardly even notice. Most every chapter Orcot will have an almost realisation or very strong doubt but he always just dismisses it. The world just falls apart, could not stand under its own weight. Still, it is all well crafted and stylish, and that is why it makes me angry - if it was just bad all around, I could just dismiss it altogether. This way I have reason to remember it and always be reminded how irritating it was to read.
