We had two monarchies in Middle Ages, and since 1648 we had at least three hetmans of Ukraine, who tried to install the monarchy (but there were more). Those were Khmelnytskyi, Mazepa (got deposed after the Great Northern War) and Rozumovskyi (the last hetman). And we even could get a monarchy of our own with Pavlo Skoropadskyi as the monarch after the Great War. So, no, nothing is weird in Ukrainian monarchy, you have just shown your ignorance.

@@principetnomusic They were not deposed because of that. Mazepa got deposed because he lost the war with Russia, Rozumovskyi got deposed because Russia eliminated the Hetmanate. And only Khmelnytskyi succeeded in making some sort of a monarchy for a short period, by installing his younger son as a hetman. Sadly, that son had some "problems" and didn't manage to save the position. After that Hetmanate got split and thus began a period known as The Ruin in Ukrainian history. But not because hoo-moo, "republicanism".

The only reason, why cossacks abandoned the idea of kingdom was, self-eficiency of host. Who needs a king, when no king feels same? But in old rus tradition, there was a kniaz and veche(counsil). Limitation of power was crusial anyway and Hetman during war was literaly turning parliament system into super-presidential, because cossacks understand the importans of consolidation during war time. In Ukrainian state of Skoropatski, his Hetmanate supposed to be constitutional monarchy.
