Of all the films to fault for wilful eccentricity and inanity, this one's the least deserving of such a criticism. It's one of the most disarmingly touching family dramas I can remember seeing. If anything, the playfulness of some scenes helps the film's power creep up on you as it delivers a profoundly grounded depiction of someone's coming of age. It almost feels like a magician's sleight of hand when you realise the destination Miranda July's got in mind, as the unusual milieu she plumps you into hides the arc of the emotional journey until the satisfying payoff in the third act. Anyone who's undecided about seeing this should rest assured that it's a lot more accessible than some critics seem intent on making it out to be.

Love this movie. I usually see where you're coming from, but I thought this review was much meaner than this film deserves, even if you didn't like it.

I thought it was fantastic, think Mark is really off the boil here. The quirkiness didn’t ever seem inauthentic to me

Jesus who pissed Kermode off before he watched the movie I found this to be great. Particularly the scenes when they broke into the older man’s house.

I loved it! Didnt agree that the weird-ness was too much to get through. I enjoyed the romance, the relationships, its a character study and I enjoyed it as such. I wanted more social commentary though.

Me and You an Everyone We Know was amazing. I thought it sort of calm in direction with crazy powerful feelings underneath. So achingly beautiful visually and thematically and some of the strongest performances out there. Solid story, everything is just amazing about that film. Too quirky? Felt grounded to me. Children are weird and this one has been through some stuff. It all just felt so emotionally true, solidly grounded, that I fund it hard to see how anyone can fault it for artificiality (too quirky).

Exactly. When a story is grounded and has a heart the 'quirkiness' just then serves to drive this home all the more powerfully. It's exaggerated for a reason - to dramatise how messed up humans can get. I think she's a genius on this showing and I now want to see her other films

Ah, Mark, where to begin? You can be wrong about Miranda July (and you are) but it's really unpleasant reviewing to reveal the story behind Old Dolio's name - which comes out in one of the most heartbreaking scenes of the movie (and there are a few) - before people have had a chance to see the film. Miranda July has now made 3 beautiful, affecting and funny films in a row. I watched it and, once I could talk, suggested to my wife that July must be heading into genius territory now. That you can't even sense this suggests either you have a tin ear for this blend of filmmaking or that you're becoming calloused from too many years at the coal face of movie reviewing. You're wrong about Breaking the Waves, wrong about Sucker Punch...but right about Twin Peaks: Fire walk With Me, which is verging on the kind of broken clock reviewing that just makes me sad. I used to quite enjoy your podcast but the dismissive smugness and misfiring has made it easier to skip. Miranda July has talked for years about how difficult it is for even established female directors to get films made. You are entitled to defend your review as a genuine reaction but your sneering attitude to her body of work certainly doesn't help.

This movie is for very small audience. Only few and i mean very FEW people can really get what this movie was about. Only for those with specific experiences, and for others it is just incomprehensible.

Gina Rodriguez’s performance at the beginning of this movie really took me out of it. She really overdid it in my opinion. She wasnt bad at the end though.
@luca_hc_gruber4 жыл бұрын
The end just didn't make any sense. If you have never felt love and affection you shouldn't be just randomly capable of a sexual romantic relationship. A sort of mother daughter relationship would have made much more sense imo
@mhawang8204 Жыл бұрын
I wasn’t random though. She was interested in Melanie in a sexual way. There were many hints/set-ups throughout the film. And a mother-daughter relationship with someone of the same age as you would have been really weird.

How can anyone not say this movie was all over the place? Yes, the acting is good, yes, it has quirky moments, but where is the story? What Is the story?! Everyone is saying they enjoyed the movie, but not what was enjoyed.
