Easy detail to miss, but the implication with the mirroring of their fight as teens is that Obito originally used the smoke to hide his approach on Kakashi, and possibly even scored a hit, but had attacked a clone and got beat by Kakashi emerging from the ground. So in the rematch, Obito throws the kunai to fake Kakashi out and get a much harder hit, then when Kakashi jumped out of the ground, he was ready for it and figured it was the real one, but this time around Kakashi had the clone go in front.

Obito wanted to lose here. He wanted kakashi to pierce his heart and remove the seal Madara placed there, same seal who would have blocked obito from absorbing the 10 tails. So, yeah, he didn't want to demolish kakashi.
