Kakhon Je Bashonto Gelo | Dawning | Rabindra Sangeet | Kamalini | Mayookh

“Dawning” is a fresh start, a new beginning where Kamalini Mukherji, a leading practitioner of Rabindranath Tagore’s songs (Rabindra Sangeet), and Mayookh Bhaumik, an Indian National Award-winning music director, collaborate for the first time to present seven of Tagore’s songs in a unique soundscape that brings a new perspective to these masterpieces.
“Kakhon Je Bashonto Gelo” (“Oh when did the spring pass by…”) is one of the offerings. Amir Mondal has cinematically interpreted this song and Subha Mukherji has translated the song from the original.

কখন যে বসন্ত গেল, এবার হল না গান।
কখন বকুলমূল ছেয়েছিল ঝরা ফুল,
কখন যে ফুল-ফোটা হয়ে গেল অবসান॥
এবার বসন্তে কি রে যুঁথিগুলি জাগে নি রে--
অলিকুল গুঞ্জরিয়া করে নি কি মধুপান।
এবার কি সমীরণ জাগায় নি ফুলবন--
সাড়া দিয়ে গেল না তো, চলে গেল ম্রিয়মাণ॥
বসন্তের শেষ রাতে এসেছি যে শূন্য হাতে--
এবার গাঁথি নি মালা, কী তোমারে করি দান।
কাঁদিছে নীরব বাঁশি, অধরে মিলায় হাসি--
তোমার নয়নে ভাসে ছলোছলো অভিমান॥
Translation
Oh when did the spring pass by? No songs got sung this time.
When was it that the flowers fell and strew the root of the Bokul tree?
How soon the season of bloom has faded!
Did the jasmines never awaken this spring?
Did the bees, busy in their murmur, forget to drink of the nectar?
Did the wind not quicken the field of flowers - it seemed to turn away and leave, not with its usual call, but faint and pale.
Here I have come on the last night of spring, empty-handed.
I have not woven a garland this time: what could I possibly offer you?
The silent flute weeps, the smile fades on the lips -
Your eyes well up with unspoken hurt, the unspeakable wound of love.

This is a stunning piece of work, Kamalini di! Almost flawless. I couldn't really put my finger on what I liked the most.....The soundscape, or the stunning images....The cinematography itself is awards worthy! The use of natural light is so so good. I almost thought this piece was a slice from Ritu da's Abohoman(the color palette bears an uncanny resemblance). And Mayookh Bhaumik is an artist extraordnaire. Keep them coming more. Kudos to everybody involved:)
