I just love short scale basses, I used to play guitar in a band but I also played a handful of the songs on bass and my bassest and I would switch on stage and going back and forth from a standard scale guitar to a 3/4 bass felt perfect :)

Hey Gracie, how much set up did the bass require? What is typical from kala?

I didn't get mine set up in any way. Honestly they come pretty ready to play. If you're going to be doing really serious stuff especially high on the neck you might want to take it somewhere to get intonation checked out? But honestly nothing has bothered me intonation-wise on mine so far.
