A far more convenient solution could be development of a port in Feni river in Tripura.distance of Tripura from river mouth is much less than Kaladan river route to Mizoram. Recently a tourist cruise via Bangladesh has been agreed with Bangladesh. Agreement for cargo route could be settled for mutual benefit.

No it won't replace Siliguri as the gateway to Northeast India. Such bizzare conclusions are drawn by those who are not aware of the ground realities of the region as well as the topography and natural barriers that limit access. The central part of the northeast is taken up by the hilly state of Meghalaya and the North Cachar-Karbi Anglong hill districts of Assam. This is a natural barrier between the Brahmaputra Valley and Barak valley regions of Assam along with the neighbouring states of Tripura and Mizoram. Currently, this Barak valley region and the states of Tripura and Mizoram have to bear inflated prices for most things because of the high cost of logistics and transportation. Whether the Kaladan project will make it easier for consumers of this region is something I'm not sure about but because waterways are much cheaper, it could make a meaningful difference. Let's hope it does. What kind of transit fee Myanmar charges will obviously be important but because the major part of the route will be via sea, the overall cost of transporting goods to Mizoram, Tripura and Assam's Barak valley could get rationalized. Of course, the government would have done the math before taking up such a major international project.

@@prakashchandraker4600 3 Points to consider - 1) Why on earth any country will give up such a crucial part of their geopolitical importance? countries which had traded land for money were either too weak, like is Bangladesh, Nepal or Bhutan have a condition 100X bad than Sri Lanka only then they will agree to trade, but even then a negative sentiment for India will rise that we benefited from their bad position 2) The trades happened were either between a very geopolitically active country and a newly formed or weak country and that too in todays 10s of billions of dollar 3) Only country possible is Bhutan but China wont let that happen, and also if there is an economic condition with them, we have to secure ourselves also, so giving at least 20-30 billion dollar in such a vulnerable situation will not we a good move And also major swap had happened a very long time ago, at that time the complete mass of Earth was not even captured to land was les valuable for countries, things which cant be created are most valuable, Money can be earned through good economic planning but how much money you have you cant generate land on the sea (in major quantities)

There has been no MOU between india and Bangladesh about using the Matabari port, it was just a Japanese proposal to india to get access to using the port for the NE. I've been following it for 3 years so quit yapping and do some research.

Siliguri will not be replaced cause in place of crisis who knows that other countries will still support India and give their land to use for military deployment? At last, every country will look out for their interest and National Security if war happens. Secondly, the government is investing heavily for Asian Highway projects across North East States including Siliguri so they can build wide roads if war breaks out they can easily deploy military to those regions. I am from Siliguri and still it's the gateway for NE no matter how much time it takes cause of national security and huge tolls and taxes that needs to be paid in terms of transport. So, if we can transport goods at a cheaper price why to go a long way and make things costlier along with multiple documentation for crossing borders. 😅 Lastly, Siliguri is in India and we can transport goods safely without crossing International borders including military deployment to borders quickly. Doklam is nearby but Siliguri is way more safer than Mayanmar cause Siliguri has almost 10 - 15 BSF and Military Camps around it. If needed, it's easy to deploy them and protect us. It will never be replaced cause why to invest heavily here if it was not important 😂😂
