According to the Indira Gandhi-Sheikh Mujibur Rahman treaty of 16 May 1974, India and Bangladesh were to hand over the sovereignty of the Tin Bigha Corridor (178 by 85 metres (584 ft × 279 ft)) and South Berubari (7.39 km2 (2.85 sq mi)) to each other, thereby allowing access to the Dahagram-Angarpota enclaves and the Indian enclaves adjacent to South Berubari. Bangladesh did hand over the sovereignty of the smaller South Berubari to India instantly in 1974. India, however, transfer the Tin Bigha corridor in 2011. 37 years later.

3 bigha corridor is not free. Its exchange. India, however, could not transfer the Tin Bigha Corridor to Bangladesh as it required constitutional amendment which could not be done due to political reasons.[1][2] After much Bangladesh government protest, India, instead of handing over sovereignty in 2011, proposed to lease the Tin Bigha Corridor to Bangladesh for a certain time. South Berubari, meanwhile, would remain in the possession of India.[3] The total area of South Berubari Union No. 12 is 22.58 km2 (8.72 sq mi) of which 11.29 km2 (4.36 sq mi) was to go to Bangladesh. The area of the four Cooch Behar enclaves which would also have to go to Bangladesh was 6.84 km2 (2.64 sq mi) making the total area to be transferred 18.13 km2 (7.00 sq mi). The population of the area including the four enclaves to be transferred, as per 1967 data, was 90% Hindu. The Bangladesh enclaves, Dahagram and Angorpota, were to be transferred to India. Their total area was 18.68 km2 (7.21 sq mi) and as per 1967 data more than 80% of their population was Muslim. If this exchange had gone through, it would have meant a change of nationality for the population or migration of the population from Dahagram and Angorpota and South Berubari Union No. 12 and consequent serious rehabilitation problems. There were in any case major agitations by the people of Berubari protesting against the transfer. After 1971, India proposed to Bangladesh that India may continue to retain the southern half of South Berubari Union No. 12 and the adjacent enclaves and, in exchange, Dahagram and Angorpota may be retained by Bangladesh. As part of the package a strip of land would be leased in perpetuity by India to Bangladesh, giving her access to Dahagram & Angorpota to enable her to exercise sovereignty on these two enclaves. This was accepted by Bangladesh as part of a carefully constructed Land Boundary Agreement signed by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and Prime Minister Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on 16 May 1974. The Berubari dispute was thus finally resolved by Article 1.14 of the Agreement which stated: "India will retain the southern half of South Berubari Union No. 12 and the adjacent enclaves, measuring an area of 6.8 km2 (2.64 sq mi) approximately, and in exchange Bangladesh will retain the Dahagram and Angorpota enclaves. India will lease in perpetuity to Bangladesh an area of 178 by 85 metres (584 ft × 279 ft) near 'Tin Bigha' to connect Dahagram with Panbari Mouza (P.S. Patgram) of Bangladesh."[4]

A corridor passing through a hostile Islamist country is not at all a sane idea for India and for her future. It is very risky, we will forever be in control of a foreign country to be able to access the corridor. So yeah, we need to find alternatives or maybe land swap near chicken's neck to widen the area.

Bangladesh is not your father's property that it has to give you corridor bisecting it's land and compromising it's sovereignty and territorial integrity. Greedy, selfish, hindutva imperialist Bharat is the biggest threat for Bangladesh
@suggie16
@suggie16 Жыл бұрын
@@_Final_Boss Even if Bangladesh controls the access, how is it going to be worse than the current situation? By making this new access, we aren't going to loose our existing connector. If nothing else, this corridor is an extra option to connect with NE faster, not a crippling factor. It's like you're worried about something extra that may not work.. Even if they close it for personal use, we will be simply back to the point as of today. Also Bangladesh can never militarily seize Indian assets or openly declare war. Safety of the access is a genuine issue. But it can be dedicatedly used as freight corridor, excluding the regular civilian commute. nobody is gonna land swap now. Local ethnic groups on both sides will never agree and you might end up complicating the matter.

At the time of partition, India took many Muslim-majority districts, which were supposed to belong to Bangladesh. According to the 1941 census, Karimganj district, Dhubri district, Murshidabad district, Maldah district were all predominantly Muslim. But still they had merged with India. Since the Indian government needed a major corridor to reach Northeast India, Bangladesh ceded Tetulia upazila to India after negotiating with the Indian government to give some parts of India to Bangladesh. Some Blocks of Murshidabad district, Dhubri-Mankachar District, Karimganj and Haildakandi district will be given to Bangladesh and Bangladesh will give Tetulia to India.

North Eastern Region comprises a landmass of around 8% od total India's. And its strategic location with China makes it more important to improve the connectivity of NER with rest of India. The connectivity can be improve by developing urban transportation, Inland Waterways, cross border roads. And Obviously Tetulia Corridor can be a big help. India should with its diplomacy and dialogues talk with Bangladesh about TC as it will not only benefit Us but them too. For Bangladesh will become a better market place for the NER products and vice versa. Also Bangladesh is the largest source of Medical tourist to India and that will help NER. Logistics will also be improved. Besides that Railway connectivity can also be proved beneficial.

India will use the proposed Tetulia Corridor for military use to maintain its north-east states. Will india permit the use of Indian land for military use for Bangladesh. Both countries can use others' land, air, and the sea for commercial use only. Bangladesh already has given transit permission for India. India didn’t give the transit to Nepal or Bhutan. It is wrongly depicted in map. Actually berubari is region in Jalpaiguri district of WB. Radcliff gave this region to India, but unfortunately, he forgot to mention in written map. Due to this reason, Pakistan took advantage of the situation and started claiming Berubari, and because of this particular reason, a dispute arose between India and Pakistan. To solve this issue, the Nehru-Noon Agreement was introduced in 1958. By way of this agreement, it was decided that the Berubari region would be equally devided between India and Pakistan.

It is very sad this gentleman has resorted to falsehood. Bangladesh gave up Berubari to India and India was supposed to give Tin Bigha Corridor to Bangladesh. However India back tracked on this exchange commitment and has given now Bangladesh only 24 hours access to Dahagram Angorpota which are just 2 unions. On the othef hand this Tetulia corridor will mean large scale movement of Indian vehicles through Bangladesh territory. The volume of traffic cannot be even compared. India is working on Kaladan river project with Myanmar to connect Northeast. Continue that. Leave Tetulia Corridor out of your plans.

India should deploy its diplomatic skills and acumen to convince Bangladesh and jointly build and operate a railway line and expressway from WB to Assam that is 100 miles south of the Nepal and Bhutan border with India. India has not gifted the three bigha corridor. Instead, Bangladesh gave Berubari Enclave to India. It is sad that after 30 years of Berubari handover India allows us partial use of three bighas even though we have full ownership of three bighas. India uses the territory of Bangladesh for transit. But does not give us transit with Nepal. So there is no question of giving corridor to India

@ Abhishek, No one from our country goes to India. There are some minorities who consider India as their own country, they go only. Economic condition of Bangladesh is better than India and there is no labor available here. One lakh Indians work here. Bangladesh is India's 5th largest foreign exchange earning source. India exports about 10 billion dollars and every year 1.5 million tourists visit India and from this also India earns 5 billion dollars. Do not forget that without Bangladesh, your economy will collapse.

India, however, could not transfer the Tin Bigha Corridor to Bangladesh as it required constitutional amendment which could not be done due to political reasons.[After much Bangladesh government protest, India, instead of handing over sovereignty in 2011, proposed to lease the Tin Bigha Corridor to Bangladesh for a certain time. South Berubari, meanwhile, would remain in the possession of India.

Yes, India must build corridor through SILIGARI that is vulnerable to any attack by surprise. Any corridor through Bangladesh is nor secure however could be alternative but in hot chase in Chinese attack Bangladesh is too small and weaker in defense to stand with India.

India can improve its connectivity options with the Northeast through various measures such as: 1. Developing better transportation infrastructure: The government can focus on building better roads, railways, airports, and waterways that connect the Northeast with the rest of the country. This would not only improve connectivity but also promote economic growth in the region. 2. Promoting digital connectivity: With the growth of the digital economy, improving internet connectivity in the Northeast can help bridge the gap with the rest of the country. The government can focus on providing high-speed internet to rural areas, creating digital literacy programs, and encouraging the growth of digital startups in the region. 3. Strengthening trade and commerce: By improving connectivity options, India can boost trade and commerce with neighboring countries like Bhutan, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Myanmar. This can be done by developing more border trade points and simplifying customs and border regulations. 4. Encouraging tourism: The Northeast region is known for its natural beauty and cultural diversity. By improving connectivity, India can attract more tourists to the region, which can help boost the local economy and create job opportunities. 5. Fostering regional cooperation: India can work with neighboring countries to improve connectivity in the region. This can be done by investing in regional infrastructure projects, sharing best practices, and promoting cultural exchanges. Overall, improving connectivity options with the Northeast requires a multi-pronged approach that includes investment in transportation infrastructure, digital connectivity, trade and commerce, tourism, and regional cooperation.
