I don't ever see these becoming affordable for regular Joe's. Amazing audio and video but very much a niche product for the elite home theater enthusiast. I watched Avengers Endgame on a Kaleidescape in an exclusive showroom demo theater in NYC. It was significantly better than watching in a commercial theater.

i cant agree more. this should be a service thats software based. id throw money at this all day. i dont get why i cant run my own pc and i actually need this "server" . if they would turn this into a service like steam the cinema would really be in trouble.

@@ld32486 - if it were software based, it would be too easy to steal the movie and sell on the street…. Precisely why its NOT software based. Unfortunately. There are thieves that ruin it for all of us.

Thats happening now anyway. take music and games for example. priacy in both was rampant. but thanks to services like spotify,tidal,gamepass or steam as a whole piracy has gone down in those areas. not saying it doesnt exist anymore its just not as big as it used to be thanks to ease of use of all these software based services. film needs this or its fucked. i would paid gladly for uhd 4k raw files. LEGALLY! instead of downloading torrents when i wanna watch a film. i cant buy a uhd disc and pop it in a drive on my pc. cause reasons that i dont understand at all lol. so what other choice am i left with? film industry needs to get its shit together asap or its fucked. sorry for the wall. lol.

@@ld32486 - no disagreements here nick… I only buy 4K UHD, bluray, and still dvds. But I know I’m the last of a dying breed. I do not ever want to stream anything of value. I do have Netflix for its original series and movies, and finding the occasional title not available on disc. But, yeah… sadly, lots of folks still sell pirated movies on the street here in NYC… I don’t buy pirated movies… I have a library of over 4000 titles all purchased legally. If this device were purely software, I guaranteed criminals would hack it and sell even better copies on the street… sadly The movie industry needs to find a better distribution method for quality offering… and streaming is NOT the solution in my book.

@@mikewinburn i mean some of us put a TON of money into our home theaters. we should be able to use what we paid for. im just sick of all the gatekeeping thats been goin on. the tech exists they just need to use it and cut out the HDCP nonsense. streaming is a great solution until its not lol. until i can stream in 4k hdr with lossless 11 channel dolby atmos its not a viable solution at all. thats an experience i can only get with a disc or downloading raw uncompressed files. if this software had a pc or mac app and wasnt exclusive to the hardware this would be immensely successful. the absolute standard when it comes to home theaters. anybody should be able to use this. not just the elite.

You use the correct terms here, "premium", "ultra-premium", "fancy", "high-end" which all set the expectation of the huge price tag. Very cool solution but even at 50% off MSRP it would be difficult for me to justify that expense. I do hope the model is successful and takes off for them so that this might be attainable for the rest of us one day.

So, I have a question…. Playing back the files…. Is the “player” linked directly to the hard drive… kind of like a disc transport and DAC …. Or the movie file is on the storage and uses the users ISPs network to play the movie back?

“Premium” except it only works locally. I can watch a disk put into a nas and watch it anywhere anytime including on a plane. You’re spending as much as a car for the chance to buy a movie assuming they have it. What’s the point?

Why can't I use my own storage device ? why spending so much money when I can build my own storage based on Qnap or Synolgy under 1000$ including drives ? I don't get it

Their proprietary system is to prevent any sort of piracy apparently. It’s the primary reason the studios trust them with the mezzanine files, prima has similar setups but are way more expensive but they do get movies on launch too…

I think it does as you're downloading the large movie files physically onto physical movie servers. You only need the internet for configuring the settings and buying movies on their store.

Does it access your Vudu and Movie's Anywhere accounts?

It is not a streaming device so you can only rent or buy movies from Kaleidescape. The movies are not inexpensive. The audio and picture quality are equal/better than disc. This is not for the regular Joe movie enthusiast. This is for upper echelon theaters.

external power supplies are lame for such expensive gear. Doesn't sound like a problem until you get a few, then becomes a rats nest of cords and external transformers behind your equipment or rack.

I cannot bring myself to purchase one of these. For the simple fact that there's nothing stopping them from being sued, much like they were in the past. One day there's going to be a lawsuit they just can't win, or settle. And I fear everyone who purchased these movies will lose access to them. Just something I think about....

But if you own the storage and its in your home, even if the do lose a copyright suit, how would it impact the movies already stored? Don’t we all still have files we downloaded from bearshare years ago? And they still play just fine today? They are now licensed to sell movies from their store… so for sure…you’ll be buying a legit, licensed file and storing it on your own storage…. Just like he digital files that come with your purchase of a bluray from the store.
