Kalevala is Finland’s national epic. Compiled by Elias Lönnrot in the 1800s, it consists of epic poems of creation, magic, lust, vengeance and death. A story of the sons of Kaleva, the forefather of Finns, it takes the reader to a mythical ancient land filled with monsters and magic, and even to the realm of the dead.
This animated series, narrated by Reidar Wasenius ( / reidarwasenius , illustrates the story of Kalevala from start to finish. In the first part we start, of course, from the beginning of times and creation of the world.

I am in Finland and today is Kalevala day. This video is excellent starter. The Oak tree part seemed like an analogy to a giant ash cloud that erupted from the sea volcano that engulfed the earth making the Sun and the moon disappear. Making the land barren for maybe years. Very Interesting.

Alternative folk tradition runo tells that it was Väinämöinen swimming on the sea and on whose knee the fowl laid the eggs. From the brown part became Sun, from the white part became Moon, from the shell pieces the stars. And Väinämöinen had fallen to the sea, as he was shot by Joukahainen or Kaukomieli (Lemminkäinen) with a bow, while Väinämöinen was riding a blue elk (moose to Americans) or horse. - So accordingf to this, there were at leat 3 gods (or ur-heroes) that existed before the world was born: Väinämöinen, Ilmarinen and the archer either Joukahainen or Lemminkäinen.
@Aurinkohirvi
@Aurinkohirvi 2 жыл бұрын
Actually, that runo tells the creation of the Sun, Moon and stars only. Earth existed, but the objects on the sky was created by the broken eggs.
@Chokwik
@Chokwik 2 жыл бұрын
thanks for bringing up the alternatives. i just read the other week how "Lappalainen kyyttö-silmä" shot the blue elk from under Väinämöinen. (and Väinämöinen dropped to sea, the bird landed on his knee etc.) (SKVR1822-25) from Topelius - suomen kansan vanhoja runoja, ynnä myös nykyisempiä lauluja i wonder if kyyttö-silmä is märkähattu karjapaimen, Lemminkäinen or Joukahinen.? Lemminkäinen could match because he's described with "Kauko-mielen silmä karsas" (SKVR1822-9) Are you telling the story from the top of your head, or possibly from a source you could mention? :)

My Hero Iku-Turso! The tales the old timers would come up w after drinkin 🍄laced reindeer piss! Wild! Leaves me w a few questions tho... Is Ukko the 'Father' of these eggs? If so wouldn't Akka be mad ? What were the eggs symbols of (creation obviously) but did each egg create a different aspect of the earth like a celestial cake mix? Also Vainamoinen was the Afterbirth of creation? When he gets back someone should buy him a coffee and get him a back rub that's a pretty rough start for a hero!
@Anttimation
@Anttimation 2 жыл бұрын
Agree about the coffee and back rub, haha. The other questions I don't think can be answered with Kalevala only. It was compiled of various poems and spells, thus forming a narrative of its own, while creating these mysteries. :D

Iku-Turso, Iki-Turisas, Turisas, Tursas... is no god though, in the oral tradition. Search the SKVR-database where the runos are, but instead "Iki-Turisas" search only "Turisas" or you got huge amount of wrong results. I did. Only found couple of poems that mentioned the sea monster, and a poem that mentioned a man with that name. If he was a god, there would be many runos about him. Apparently turisas ment walrus in Finnish back in time, and that's why Turisas is connected to sea. It was Agricola's creation that he was a war god, but he invented other gods too.
