Here's my theory for why this cover works so well: Kali Uchis' voice is unique in its own right, and Björk's own distinct voice was designed to be sung over this instrumental and singing these specific words and sounds. Kali's own presentation and delivery is faithful to Björk's version in that she does not compromise her own voice or style to match something that nobody can even try replicating, so she does her own thing with this, and it makes for a much more compelling listen than if a Broadway belter or someone with an indistinct voice (yet still technically gifted and/or trained, mind you) took on this song, or any of Björk's songs. Something tells me that if Christina Aguilera tried singing her heart out to Bachelorette, it would sound like shit. Alicia Keys singing Pagan Poetry? Don't even get me started.

I think it also has to do with the fact that both Kali and Bjork came onto the scene with their own unique sounds, Bjork introduced this new alternative sound that had never really ever been done before, therefore making her sound impossible to replicate no matter how hard someone tried nearly every bjork cover had a weird sound that just didn't fit the atmosphere Bjork had made for herself in terms of vocals, sound, etc. when Kali came out with drunken babble what enticed people was her voice and its hypnotic nature that people could only compare to artists of the 60's to mid/late 90's and the very soulful sounds throughout those times, with all of this it doesn't surprise me how well Kali performed this cover because she doesn't try too hard to make this cover her own, she follows Bjorks sound and mixes it with her own talent to create something beautiful that is still very faithful to Bjorks sound.

I’m a huge fan of Björk, and I really do enjoy Kali Uchis’ sound. I didn’t know how I would feel about this upon seeing it…but her and the band really did an amazing job covering it.
