Don't hurt Tom. He's workin' hard on keeping me flexible and not smacking myself in the back of the head with double sticks.

If he grabs and pulls you can go with his force and close and apply an elbow strike. I like elbows because they don't break as easy as a fist. I learned to go with force from Tai Chi. You don't use force against force and you use the minimal amount of force possible. I also train Bagua and Xingyi. You could also take him down and lock his joint on the ground. Running only works if they down come after you.

What we Filipinos and Filipinas do nowadays is the use of the olecranon bone, we call that part siko in Filipino. Sikohan is the action of using siko as self-defense. Girls or boys know this. You could see that even in Filipino action movies or fighting scenes movies. And in real life we use that. In this situation, 1.we evade the attacker (side step) 2. Slap his hand so the knife is removed from hand of attacker 3. Twist his hand ( this step will not care the attacker is tall) 4. Hit with siko or olecranon the face of attacker 5. Push attacker on the ground, his face facing the soil. You could use your free hand or legs to push the attacker's back on the ground. The goal is not to kill but unarm the attacker.

What a gentle bully! lol However, the skills you introduced are really efficient for the weaks including kids and ladies. In my country, Japan, carrying knives and guns is prohibited but the usage of these weapons could be more critical in your nation.

I learned the dumog escape technique in my middle school gym class when we learned basic wrestling techniques. Except they called it an "arm drag".

In that book "Secret Fighting Arts", I never forgot the "elbow breaker"; that cross-grab would be a PERFECT opportunity to execute that move! Goodbye elbow! As a woman, I am always interested in techniques that can be executed by women that rapidly disable the (much stronger) opponent. Wish I had come across kali earlier in life! I can tell you of one case where a young women told me she was waiting at a bus stop late at night after stick fighting class (not kali, some other technique; jeet kune do, I think) and a gang of men started to approach her...she casually started doing a stick drill- and the gang abruptly changed direction and went away.
