As a young boy growing up I was fascinated with Rambos bow and arrows. I remember building a bow from a sapling I cut from a tree in our backyard lol. This brought back alot of good memories of that time and has inspired me to try and build another one. Thanks!

- You can make fletchings from duct tape. - for blunt tip arrows, seems that nuts that fit the shaft should work.

Hey, I love the finished bow. I've been thinking about doing a small wooden or pvc bow as a personal project, and this is more or less exactly what I wanted to do, so, it's a great inspiration.

If you go to the pet store and get a rawhide bone (dog chew toy), you can make a great backing for the bow that will protect it and increase draw weight a little. Soak the rawhide until pliable and use wood glue. Wrap it around the limb completely with inner tubing and allow to dry. Leave plenty on the edges to trim as it will shrink.
@grejen711
@grejen711 Күн бұрын
I tried this and mostly it just added weight and no strength to the bow. I guess I didn't get it adhered properly so that's probably key. Also note that dog chew toys are no longer rawhide. They're collagen only. The actual hide part is not included. Backing a bow with actual rawhide does work of course.

Nice one bud! Please make a similar video using vertical grain bamboo flooring? I think for a similar draw it will be smoother and faster at lighter arrows 10-11 gpp and would be perfect for a kid’s small game bow

Introducing run off by tapering limbs is something I've always wondered about. I've watched tons of board bow videos and have made a couple... but even if your grain is perfectly straight as you taper your limbs you're going to introduce run off

Switching to a 'left handed' draw because my left eye is dominant changed my archery world. Suddenly I was hitting the target reliably and the activity went from interesting and fun to compelling and rewarding as well.

Hello, I'm not a hunter. It's just not something that I've ever gotten into. However, I do really enjoy creating weapons, bushcrafting, and building things, backpacking, camping and fishing. I've recently decided to try my hand at bow making. So naturally, I'm watching all of the videos that I can find on the subject. I'm just wondering if layering a few thin strips of wood in the center of your bow rather than that 1 large piece and then adding a layer of carbon and Epoxy resin would stiffen it up enough to get around 40lbs out of it. I really like that you tried to create a bow out of big box store, off the shelf materials. I'm heading out to the woods tomorrow to find a nice Maple stave to build my first bow. I've been waiting for a day off from work for this little adventure but I think I will also try your box store bow build. I'm really wanting to try to build at least one bow with a fishing reel on it. And even though I don't wish to hunt big game. I would consider bird hunting, duck, grouse and pheasant, while out on my woods walks. I really appreciate your effort with making these videos and showing others what they could potentially do. I'm trying to get away from a commercial, corporate, consumeristic, existence and get back to a more grounded, earthy lifestyle. Videos like these really help with that effort. Thank you very much. New subscriber.

I’m not an expert on laminated bows but my birch bow videos would be the same process as maple. Just make sure you are choosing sugar maple and not silver maple, silver maple is too soft. I also grouse hunt a lot with bows. Not sure what benefit a fishing real would have.

@Benjamin.stevens It's just something that I want to try. I work in a sporting goods department and we are always getting broken and damaged fishing poles with reel combos. I've got my eye on a couple really nice ones that would work pretty well for a fishing bow. Maybe I'll make a video of it, just to try making a video. I'm actually a boat builder and I have a really great design for a 13' freight canoe that I'm wanting to build and outfit as a backwater camp cruiser. It's really wide and stable and would make a great bow fishing vessel because it's light and advantageous for standing up in. We have quite a few lakes around here and some of the really skinny water seasonal tributaries are only accessible by kayak, canoe and by walking. I also carry a 22 rifle that weighs under 3 lbs. There's literally dozens of these small creeks and thousands of acres and feet of shoreline. It's very much like exploring. It's 26 miles to the nearest town by roadway. It's also very hilly with lots of ravines, with creeks running through that have little secluded fishing holes that no one ever fishes. A fishing bow may be the perfect tool! If you want to see so.e of the area, go check out The Cumberland Rover channel. He sails his little 12' skiff in the same area and does naturalist videos. Thanks, I'll check out your Birch bow video next. I love your work, I'm learning a lot from your content.

Another good option for cheap arrows are the bamboo garden stakes at Home Depot. They will need some heat straightening, but that’s super simple, and they are tough as nails. Also, you can get a pack of I believe 8 for around $6.

When it comes to speed a bow between 35-45# matches a bow between 90-100# (Or more), just because with the poundage of the bow the arrow weight also has to increase. It's just the momentum and thus penetration power that is stronger on heavy bows/arrows. That's why they were used in warfare back in the day.

When I was a kid I use to make bows out of those thin fiberglass flag poles they use to put on bicycles. They worked really good. I bet you can double or triple them up to increase the power.

Awesome bow. Nicely done. I'm working on my 3rd red oak board bow. The first one broke (also broke two poplar board bows) and the second was a success. I used Gorilla wood glue to add fiberglass strands as a backing. Not sure if that was necessary. Love that arrow rest!

Is that an English Springer Spaniel I spy? So cute. I love the contrast of the black head and the white body (with minor ticking). My first Springer had an almost all-white body too, but he had the liver color variant for his head, and the odd body patch. Oh, video was good too. I've been contemplating trying a project like this, just for fun...I'm not much of a woodworker or anything, but it seems to be not too difficult, and everyone knows bows are badass. The tillering is likely to be the part I mess up, as that looks like it takes actual skill. Otherwise though, it's probably manageable.
