Here's a comparison between the original Kalimari Desert on Nintendo 64 and the newest version included in Mario Kart 8's Booster Course Pack for Nintendo Switch!

One thing to note the cpu players in Mario kart 64 would actually stop for the train when it's in the way. They don't always come to a full stop right away and may hit the train anyway but they'll still attempt to stop. But I noticed in Mario kart 8 deluxe they'll keep driving forward regardless if the train is passing or not. Mario kart 8 deluxe Cpu players will not stop for the train

It's so impressive that they incorporated the train tunnel into being part of the race. I guess it's because the 7 version wouldn't let you drive through the tunnel, so Nintendo is like, fine, you wanna drive thru the tunnel, you can, but now you must go against the train without getting run over by it.

It's really crazy how lonely the original track feels. That applies to a lot of games on the N64, but this one especially. How you can just stare off into the distance and there's nothing but flat ground for miles, how the music only has 2 or 3 instruments, it's really got a vibe only the N64 can pull off. It's cool to see how far Nintendo has come in terms of design and liveliness, too.

Back in the day that was all we needed and never did anyone complain about it. The game was as much fun as today's, despite the huge graphical differences. That's why to many, those graphical complaints are always a little over the top... because it's just not as important as many make it out to be.

I have to say this really makes me appreciate the track more, I may not be a 90s kid so I didn't grow up with Mario Kart 64 but I just love the atmosphere of the track, a orange desert mainly revolving around passing a train, it's calming and with the train tracks it becomes exciting to both watch and pass the train along with the western/country like music.

Meanwhile, the cross buck (the X sign) is the completely different in both versions, heh. (MK64 uses the American one, while MK8D uses a different coloured version of the Japanese one or similarly to Poland's cross buck)

A couple of things to point out between the N64 and Deluxe version of Kalimari Desert is that the train in N64 has 5 carts behind the train and in Deluxe there are only 3. Another thing to point out is that the first set of railroad crossings are beside each other in N64 and in Deluxe they are across from each other and in Deluxe the other set of railroad crossings is missing which I don’t really understand why they took that one out, maybe because of that ramp that appears in the second lap or something.

It's worth noting that on the N64, the number of cars on the train varied by player count, with four-player races only seeing a lone locomotive race around the tracks.

I think you mean the crossing signals, there are two only on one side of the crossing in the original, as they would do for a one way street, and one on each side in MK8 as for a two-way street...

I like how the original track about the Railroad crossing SFX that has Real Japanese National Railroad crossing with electronic bells before they replace the American Railroad crossing sounds in the later or new version of the course.

I still love the 64 courses so much. Kalimari Desert is one that I'd get really competitive against my siblings when playing the og back in the day. I would love to see all of them back but if we can't get them all, I'd at least hope to see Bowser Castle N64.

I always loved the 64 version of Mario kart... To me it's not just about playing something that I loved a kid it's when the series started to go into the competition of the series... There will always be things that are in a title that are not in others that I enjoy but 64 really brought out what it means to local play... And battle mode...

The comparison of the on train collision is what slightly disappoints me with the new Mario Kart games. The impacts are so nerfed that most items or obstacles just don't feel as intimidating as they used to be. I miss when your kart would go flying high in the air from bombs and blue shells as it felt powerful and actually a decent item now they're just like a simple green or red shell.

I do see what you mean, and yeah, impacts could be a little more dangerous, but blue shells bring you to a dead stop, while red and green shells let you maintain a LITTLE momentum. But it's barely noticeable because the animation is the same. Bombs and Blue Shells should cause more damage than reds and greens.

In order for the lap to be counted in the old Super Mario Kart, you have to drive through the tunnel with an active star. But that only works in rounds 1 and 2.

They reversed the railroad crossing. The old one has e bells on the crossings that is used in todays railroads crossing where as the new ones sound like mechanical bells which in todays railroad crossings are hard to find since electronic bells took over. Should of put a GS type 2 or 3 e bell or a Safetran type 3 e bell or a NEG e bell. Those seem to be the most common. Especially the type 2 GS e bells

I love the flow of this video. Mario kart 64 was a big part of my childhood so it means a lot! Though if you wanted to be slightly more faithful you could have used the pipe frame kart which is based on the 64 design.

While I like the looks of the new train it's sad that it's still shorter than the original, meaning it's blocking the crossing not as long. And as almost always I'm not a big fan of the remixed music.

Take a look at the timer in the top-right. I'm doing this by eye, so I might not be EXACTLY right, but... each train in each version, from the moment they are in the 'crossing zone' to when the rear carriage leaves, is just about four seconds. MK64: 1.16.26 - 1.20.50 MK8: 1.41.158 - 1.45.048 The train may look shorter thanks to the different graphics, but the difference is about 2 10ths of a second... objectively shorter, sure, but in practice? It's a hazard for just as long.

The 8 DX version is a fusion between the original and "Kalimari Desert 2" from Tour, also retaining a ramp from the T version of the track.

Hovering would’ve ruined this and other tracks I’m glad they didn’t do that (Waluigi Pinball would’ve worked because you wouldn’t have changed the whole track) I’m not apposed to hovering I just want it where it wouldn’t ruin the essence of (like Wario Stadium) Toads Turnpike, Piranha Plant Slide, Neo Bowser City, and Dk Jungle worked because it worked it in without ruining the essence of the track Wario Stadium just said throw it in and cover what used to be there with mud (What I’m trying to say is I see Wario Stadium but I don’t feel Wario Stadium)

Arguably the most improved course of wave 2 thanks to the race track layout change provided by the Kalimari Desert 2 track of Tour being combined with the classic one. A combination that also opened the door to more classic tracks getting actual rerouts in Tour, then having said rerout be combined with the classic course should it return with the Booster Course pack. Instead of having just the Tour original tracks receiving this treatment.

??? What are you talking about? You can go into the tunnel in both versions. Though with Mario kart 8 deluxe version is more mandatory to go through the tunnel as the path changes on the second lap to go through the tunnel. in 64 version its more for an optional exploration purposes. It's even shown in the video

But I still don't like it, I prefer the original circuit with the totally useless option to go into the tunnel. Like exploring Peach's castle in Royal Raceway. I dunno I just like these random areas that are pointless and add nothing but can be explored. So this continuous run that just arbitrarily changes for no real reason doesn't appeal to me.
