The kalimba's sound reminds me of music boxes I had when I was a little kid, the sound had this poetic tinge I can't explain, I think it's also used for mood setting when the griots go from village to village, during story time or when they recite proverbs.

If you've never played an instrument before, it will be. But it's probably the easiest instrument I've learned. You can play really simply things that sound nice, and the way the instrument is designed, it's pretty hard to play things that sound awful.

If someone is thinking about getting one, please go for a 17 key kalimba in C. You'll quickly learn how to play and 10 keys isn't enough for many songs.

Funny. You don't need a10 tube Kalimba just out some tape over the ones you don't want to use. Beginner songs only use 10 to 15. So for those buying one done waste your money on the 10. Get the 17. Although I'm a musician, it is very simple to learn. Can play anywhere and you don't need to read music. There are lots of resources here in KZbin for learning. I chimney the red tabs to a number chart and it is easy. If you read music you can go a step further using a piano score to write your own cover Kalimba music.
