In the year 2898 AD, the tenth and final avatar of Lord Vishnu, Kalki, is poised to be born, heralding a new era amidst a dystopian world fraught with malevolent forces. Director Nag Ashwin’s film, “Kalki 2898 AD,” is a heady mix of mythology, science, action, and fiction that works in parts.
🌟 Stellar Visuals and Cinematic Universe: Ashwin, with the help of his cinematographer Djordje Stojiljkovic, takes us into the lone existing city of Kasi, ruled by the evil Commander Manas (Saswata Chatterjee) and led by God King Supreme Yaskin (Kamal Haasan). The mysterious powerhouse known as Complex is where Yaskin resides. It’s a dark world where fertile women are killed, and men are enslaved. The only ray of hope lies with Bhairava (Prabhas) and a motley bunch of rebels from Shambhala. When they rescue SUM80 (Deepika Padukone), the bearer of the awaited avatar, the film takes us on a visually stunning journey.
🎭 Complex Characters and Sub-Plots: The film weaves a complex web of characters and sub-plots, some of which have little to do with the broader narrative. Prabhas’ character suffers from back-and-forth moments, and even veteran actor Brahmanandam’s attempts at comedy fall flat. The half-baked love angle with Roxie (Disha Patani) could have been done away with. However, the film sets up a perfect tone for future installments in this massive universe.
🔮 The Prophecy and the White Horse: “Kalki 2898 AD” revolves around the prophecy of the tenth avatar of Lord Vishnu arriving on a white horse, signaling the end of the Kali Yuga. As the battle between Gods, good, and evil unfolds, the film immerses viewers in a captivating audio-visual experience.
👍 Verdict: If you enjoy diving into epic battles and exploring a world where mythology meets futuristic sci-fi, “Kalki 2898 AD” offers quite a satisfying experience. Patience is required, especially during the meandering first half, but the stunning visuals and imaginative world-building make it worthwhile.
