Both justification and theosis are at the heart of the Gospel. We need both. We cannot separate the legal/forensic term from the healing term. Both are present in the scriptures to describe how glorious and wonderful the work of Christ is in us. Therefore, having been justified by faith (PAST), we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through Whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand (PRESENT) and rejoice in hope of the glory of God (FUTURE). As what Fr. Eusebius Stephanou (Logos Outreach, St. Symeon) also clearly stated in his sermon, "re-birth" is truly the language of the bible, a one time event. Then, the growth follows. No birth, no growth. It does not mean that justification is the only work of God. Whom He justified, He also glorifies. Justification is God's declaration of us, in Christ, being made righteous in His sight. Theosis is us partaking the divine life of God and growing into the likeness of His Son.

DO WOMEN GO THROUGH THEOSIS? in Orthodoxy and become deified Theosis brings up some interesting questions: 1) Do women go through theosis and become deified? 2) If not - doesn't that sound sexist 3) If so - how do you reconcile God being definitely masculine? 4) If the Titular Head of Orthodoxy further along the path of deification than other bishops? 5) If a low ranking bishop is further along the path of deification why doesn't he have more authority than the Titular Head? 6) If Mary will not be deified, why do you ascribe to her attributes of God?

Our salvation is settled so that one does not need to be self conscious but is able to spread the good news without a question of ones personal being for our success never qualified us therefore our failure does not disqualify us. That does not mean we shouldn't be diligent in our faith and relationship with God for it is by this relationship with God are we able to breathe and handle all circumstances falling 7 times and getting up back up. Your salvation is finished as soon as you recognize Jesus Christ as Son of God and confess yourself as sinner faithfully believing that Jesus will save you and once you say Amen! (TRUTH) you are SAVED. It is finished God is now your father and Jesus is your friend and Shepard no need to worry about your salvation it is now time to worry about everyone else!!! THEOSIS: Becoming like God? The Orthodox doctrine of theosis (or deification) is one of the doctrines unique to Orthodoxy. Neither Catholics1 nor Protestants have a doctrine quite like it. Simply put, theosis means becoming God or like God. In actuality, the Orthodox theosis doctrine combines the Bible’s teachings on justification and sanctification as one thing. The main scripture Orthodox use to support this doctrine is 2 Peter 1:4: “[God] has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature....” This participating in God’s nature is called deification or theosis. Author Daniel Clendenin says, “It is fascinating to observe the total absence of the doctrine of justification by faith in large segments of Orthodox history and theology. Instead, the idea of theosis or ‘deification’ takes center stage.2 The startling aphorism-attributed to many early church fathers, including the champion of trinitarianism, Athanasius-summed it up well: ‘God became man so that men might become gods.’” 3 Such a statement sounds heretical. However, in Orthodox practice it means simply becoming more like God in our character - becoming holy and sanctified. Theosis also reveals another distinction of Orthodoxy - its disinterest in judicial justification in favor of restoration of fellowship with God. In theosis, “the legal framework for understanding the work of Christ is played down and our mystical union with God is emphasized,” Clendenin notes.4 Since theosis combines sanctification and justification, it is sometimes hard to understand if Orthodox writers are referring to one or the other. Most of the time, it refers to sanctification, as Orthodox do not generally accept the Protestant teaching of salvation and justification occurring at repentance. Instead, they believe that salvation is not certain until death. Biola’s report on Orthodoxy says as much: “... justification holds little place in Orthodox theology. Rather Orthodox theology refers more to ‘salvation’ or ‘deification’ (being transformed into the likeness of God through union with Christ) and ‘sanctification.’ ...These terms, which overlap and are not clearly differentiated in Orthodox teaching, refer to a person’s relationship with God. This means being right with him and enjoying fellowship with him and his life, as opposed to being alienated from him and without divine life... justification is included in the process of theosis or deification.” 5 Orthodox Bishop Timothy Ware’s comments on deification (theosis) seem more suited to sanctification than justification: “…there is nothing ... extraordinary about the methods which we must follow in order to be deified. If someone asks ‘How can I become god?’ The answer is very simple: go to church, receive the sacraments regularly, pray to God ‘in spirit and in truth’, read the Gospels, follow the commandments.” 6 The problem with such statements is that they imply that salvation is attained by doing good works. For instance, Orthodox theologian Christoforos Stavroupoulos writes: “Theosis... How is it possible for us to make this a reality? ... The Christian life comes into being with the sacraments and with holy works, those virtuous works which are done with a pure and holy motive in the name of Christ.” 7 According to Orthodox teaching, we attain deification or theosis by observing the church sacraments and keeping the commandments: “Fastings, vigils, prayers, alms, and other good works which are done in the name of Christ are means which help us reach that goal which always remains the same: the reception of the Holy Spirit and the making him our own, that is, theosis. Good works are able to grant us the fruits of the Holy Spirit only when they are done in the name of Jesus Christ.” 8 The Protestant view of theosis First, the Orthodox teaching on theosis usually corresponds to the Protestant doctrine of sanctification - becoming holy and one with God. As such it is a profitable doctrine. However, since the word theosis also sometimes is used to mean justification, it can cause problems, in that it implies we can earn forgiveness. (See below.) Second, Protestants also note that the word theosis is not found in the Bible. It is a hybrid doctrine that neither Jesus nor the apostles taught. Third, a careful reading of the principal scripture that is used to support the theosis doctrine (2 Peter 1:4) shows that sanctification was Peter’s theme, not justification. “[God] has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature....” God wants us to have the same holy character that he has. This is similar to other passages in the Bible that refer to the process of sanctification (and not justification): “...Let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God” (2 Cor. 7:1). “...We ... are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory...” (2 Cor. 3:18). Fourth, adding justification to sanctification may seem minor, but it quickly leads to the belief that we must strive to attain justification just as we strive to attain sanctification. It destroys our peace with God because it is impossible through good deeds to justify ourselves to God. The prophet Isaiah noted: “... all our righteous acts are like filthy rags...” (Is. 64:6). The “holy works” needed for theosis are helpful when it comes to sanctification, but are useless in obtaining justification for our sins, as Isaiah noted. Instead of justification by faith, the theosis doctrine inadvertently tries to attain justification by works. The role of faith is absent, as noted in Biola’s report: “The Orthodox teaching on being born again as involving the necessity of the sacraments and the hierarchy of the church denies that the new birth is effected solely by faith through the instrumentality of the Word of God.” 9 Christians who do not understand that justification is a gift of God not obtained by works, can become discouraged. Trying to reach God by good works, they soon discover that it is not possible. They have no peace with God. They also lack joy and thankfulness for their salvation, since they believe that it depends on their works, which they realize are insufficient. Confronted by their repeated failures, they may give up and fall back into sin. This can be the result of confusing these two doctrines. In its worst form, the doctrine of theosis is a dangerous mix of two doctrines that scripture treats separately for good reason. Christians are justified instantaneously by faith in Christ. You are wrong, early protestants also held this view, but what make them differ from orthodoxy is that they are not tied to this falso dichotomy: juridical justification x theosis. For us, protestants, we are justified (declared just) in the moment of our conversion; wich only happens because of our faith in Christ, from whom we were elected; and since we are elected, God also predestined us, and glorified us. ALL the verbs on the PAST tense. So, once you are really saved, you are always saved, and you will transform yourself from glory to glory, starting from here. (2Co 3:18; Gl 3:27. Your essay reflects a certain misunderstanding of scripture. First, the quotation from Isaiah referring to the righteousness of Man as filthy rags does not apply to the fruitfut works we do in obedience to Christ after conversion. Charitable deeds like feeding the poor and helping the homeless are accepted by God. Two, those who believe they are saved by good deeds but not by faith would not be at risk of "falling back into sin" because their unbelief means they never left their sins. You are overthinking these various doctrines and confusing obedience with legalism. Jesus himself asked, "Why do you call me Lord, Lord, but do not the things that I say?" An emphasis on works is not for sinners but for believers, whose maturity requires them to move past the first steps.

Hector, you are falsely confusing the Orthodox position (which even some Orthodox do). Justification for us not a legal declaration of righteousness (nor is it really in the N.T.). Rather it is placing oneself by faith in God in a position to receive His divine grace, and thus to to be saved (by relationship to God). And faith is not just a mental “belief” in the idea that God exists and is the Savior, but a way of life stemming from a change of heart that brings one in line with life in the Spirit. We are “saved by grace through Faith. It’s like taking your clothes off and walking outside into the sunshine to get a tan. I believe in Theosis and the eucharist is the body and blood of Christ not a symbol. I'm my heart thought not in communion with the orthodox. I am now a m a defender of the orthodox way, the orthodox church and priesthood. I am here to submit myself I am scared but I know it's God's will. I reject original sin, salvation is. Not an act it's a process, I was baptized as a baby, by Catholics being premature. I have taught for years to prootostants baptism of babys is God's way. I must through theosis work out my salvation with fear and trembling. I present my self to you and the orthodox Church because Jesus wants it. Justin martyr, polycarp and iraenusus, through the communion of the saints, brought me to you.

Salvation isnt about getting to heaven to escape the judgement of God. Its a road you take where Christ is alive in you and become more like Him. And then Death is finally conquered and You live. Eternal life is finally manifested by your physical resurrection. Its no surprise that Protestants dont get it. Their focus and understanding of Salvation is flawed. Its about being like Christ which takes time and thats why its a process. Believing its all about the washing of blood for our sins and getting into heaven makes a person automatically believe that when you accept Christ, Thats it youre always saved for it is by his Grace he came into your life and so He will never leave. Its nothing to do with you and everything to do with Him. And so because Christ cannot change nothing will ever change. But its really not like that. Its about Spiritual growth and if one stops growing and falls away then they will lose Christ in their life and lose their soul.

Salvation is a Covenant by God, not a contract with man. Jesus says that the new Testament is in His blood, it is a covenant vow made by the blood of God (Acts 20:28). (Testament literally means “Covenant” in the original Greek - The Old and New Covenant/Testament) Luke 22:20) Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you. 1Corinthians 11:25) After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. Hebrews 12:24) And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel. John 1:12-13) "But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God." - not by our blood, but the blood of God. Not by our will or power, but only of God. As Jesus said "no man can pluck you out of my hand" that means you cannot pluck yourself out either - not by your will. As it says "THAT YE MAY KNOW" absolute assurance of your salvation, and this is because you have believed. It has nothing to do with our abilities of anything, salvation is only by the power of God which comes upon us when we believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. Romans 10:9-10) That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. The Father doesn't disown the wayward child, but like the prodigal son the goodness of God leads us to repentance and cleansing - When did the prodigal son cease to be a son of the Father? Salvation is NOT by works, NOT by righteous works, NOT by deeds of the law, and NOT by sight. But by Faith alone, through Grace alone, by Jesus Christ who is God alone - Titus 3:5 / Ephesians 2:8-9 / Galatians 2:16 / 2 Corinthians 5:7 / Romans 1:17 / Romans 6:14 / Hebrews 10:38. Romans 10:9-10) “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” After believing and repenting you are sealed/saved, then because of your love for Christ you want to follow Him. Ephesians 1:13 and Ephesians 4:30 - It's not because you have to but because you want to. Any idea of self merit affecting salvation in earning to gain, maintaining to keep, or self atonement for sins is heresy and the person is not saved. The same goes for believing that Baptism saves, forgives, or seals with the Spirit - it's still a belief in a form of righteous works that affects salvation - this is heresy too. It's all through Christ's merit on the Cross and His Resurrection, or else through attempting in your own merit you earn Hell. And this Salvation can never be lost or taken away - Romans 8:1 no condemnation unto those in Christ. Any sin after that brings chastisement, not disowning or a casting away. John 15:1-6 is paired with 1Cor 5:1-5 / Psalm 66:18 / Prov 28:9 / James 1:6-7 nowhere does it relate to losing salvation or having it being taken away. James 2 is not talking about works to keep your salvation, but rather it's talking to Christians already saved, and it's talking about charity and Christian behavior for promotion of the faith, not maintenance of salvation. If James is talking about maintaining salvation then Apostle Paul is a liar. Matthew 24 is speaking about the end of days and the trials and tribulations that will occur. "endure to the end" is in reference to the Great Tribulation, as it is a limited time and will soon be over and those under persecution will be saved from the oppression. It is not a salvationary passage, Christ is not talking about salvation but rather persecution. It's the same context as the other passage that says how a woman will be saved in child bearing - talking about the pains and troubles. Hebrews 6:4-6 and 10:26 is speaking about the unsaved falling away (rejecting) enlightenment, the knowledge of , the taste of salvation - they had not yet taken hold. This does not relate to the saved giving up or losing salvation as many think. Losing Salvation, or it being taken away, given up - denotes a working to keep it. But it's not by works or righteous works, deeds of the law, or by sight. It's by Grace alone through Faith alone. Matthew 7:21-23) "Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity." Nowhere do they say "have we not believed on thy name?". They were trusting in their works, righteous works, and law keeping. They were depending on religiosity and Christian behavior to earn their salvation like all the cults do. He is a classic 'sounding brass'. I approached him when I was young because I had received a powerful vision of the Divine and I sought him out. He snubbed me forcefully, unwilling to speak to me. Anthony Bloom although old at the time wrote me a gentle and loving letter which I greatly cherish. Second, he does not one time mention the gospel and how a person is saved... the gospel that Paul preached regarding justification through faith in Jesus Christ. Yes ... but it is not a mere head belief that we should have. Ephesians 2:8-10 states that we are saved by grace through faith, and notice verse 10 - doing the works of the Spirit. So you are saved by grace through faith in what Christ did for you on the cross, and by obeying the Spirit of grace you receive in your life. Hence, your believing is DEMONSTRATED by loving acts or the works of the Spirit through your life. That's how you are saved. Trust and Obey.

Mat R Who said anything about “mere head belief” anyway? Paul doesn’t mention that. I’m talking about faith in the heart that trusts God’s Word and Promise and so behaves accordingly. It’s not our behavior that justifies from sin, though. It’s the faith. It’s the blood of Christ, otherwise why did He die? Did He die as a spectacle or to justify us from our sin? The only way to receive that justification is faith. I’ll never understand how learned Christians can go sit and read Paul’s writings, which were written with much passion and love, and come away with any other doctrine except faith justifies, apart from works. It’s hammered on so well in Galatians, I’m baffled every time I meet someone who listens to a preacher or someone else as if their opinions are above St. Paul. Truly a mystery to me.

Did not Paul teach we must do the works of the Spirit of Christ in us to be saved? James talking about the works you do by the Holy Spirit's direction. James is saying, your faith is dead - it can't make you saved if you reject the Spirit's leading. The reason it does is because your God is a very small and provincial God who makes very small and provincial changes. the main difference between the Catholic and Orthodox understanding of theosis and the Mormon one involves the scale of the god that we are dealing with. The God of Catholics and Orthodox is "ipsum esse subsistens", is that is he in whom the act of being subsists, in whom the very foundation of the category of "to be" is found. Glad to see another LDS here, While theosis, is similar to our concept of becoming like God, we should keep in mind that Orthodoxy still maintains a traditional view of the Trinity. (Vs Our conception of the Godhead), they see only one God as a totality in three beings, whereas we see The Father, Son and HG as three different and distinct beings. Deification does not mean anyone become a god in any sense, and thus it is very different in comparison to Mormon theology. The fathers has said that theosis is like iron that is heated in fire: iron starts to radiate light and heat like fire, and iron become less solid; yet iron is not transformed but stays as iron. Similar way, we humans grow in the likeness of God by partaking the life of Triune God without changing our human nature. God's nature is something very different with human nature, just as fire is very different with iron.
