Black Waltz is my favorite. It's so consistent front to back. No filler songs at all. Every song has its own personality and uniqueness. It's where their songwriting peaked imo. (Sections like 2:25 on One from the Stands, the first minute and ending of Time Takes Us All are just legendary and the opening/main theme of the title track is ear wormed in my head for all eternity) Unlike the "blur" of riffs, blasts and synths on their first two, its just so much more thought out. The first 4 are untouchable classics though.. after that, hit and miss albums and songs before they mostly recover with Palo. No singular album they have done after Black Waltz can touch the greatness of the first 4. (Some songs definitely reach those heights). I remember being so excited for and consequently let down with For the Revolution. Oh and Kalmah > Bodom

for those of us who had devoured the 2004 sample tracks the band posted of bitter metallic side and groan of wind which at the time was being called infernal death, the end result of black waltz was very disappointing in comparison. especially the album version of infernal death - groan of wind. also they made the melody on bitter metallic side sound like some Sesame Street nonsense. Black Waltz is maimed by production and the fact mr pekka's voice had to switch styles to the low register due to being allegedly damaged. At least that was the reasoning given for no more of the shrieking style vocals on that album.

Nice review! With many songs, you only realize how brilliant they are when you take your time and listen carefully. These are my 3 highlights from the album "The Black Waltz": Groan Of Wind: The beautiful melody which starts at the same time as the brutal vocals. Time Take Us All: Rytm at 1:44, Black Waltz: Solo at 3:20. Kalmah plays in the top league although they just do music as a hobby.

Thanks for the video. All the more reasons to revisit some of the albums I havent listened to in a while. And since you asked: while I loved the first 2 albums I (for whatever stupid reason) stopped paying attention to this band for a while. That is until I heard Black Waltz, which in my opinion is where Kalmah peaked. I love how the album is simultaneously heavy and catch and the growls blew me away on first listen, as I prefer how they fit the music. Crushingly heavy riffs paired with unforgettable melodies. Perfect album!

There's also Sirenia's 1977, Olkoth's At The Eye of Chaos (For some nasty, heavy death metal FFO Nile, Hate Eternal and Hideous Divinity).

Your tier list really shows what kind of sound you like from their albums. Interesting that you rated The Black Waltz so low. That album has so many timeless and unique songs but I can see how the overall album isn't as consistent as some of the others. Contrarily to you, I LOVED Hollo so much it was refreshing to see them try this sort of song and nailing it so well. Really appreciating the respect for 12 Gauge since that album slaps so hard. That said I rate Swamplord much much higher than They Will Return or Swampsong. That debut album was a masterpiece.

I like kalmah. This album brings back certain vibes that felt in short supply on the last album. Palo you can kinda tell they wanted to try something different. This album feels more back on course with what people loved. It is taking a few listens to connect to but the foundation is there. Like with insomnium I can find the vocal production hit and miss from one album to the next, with lyrics and hooks having either the right mix or clarity and rawness or feeling muddy and buried a bit. It’s an ok album, they can be proud of it. Also Black waltz is awesome

I agree with your point on Palo. It definitely sounds like they tried to go in a more 'accessible' direction with tracks like 'The Evil Kin' and 'Take Me Away'. I'm not sure if they've ever admitted to it in the interviews they've had, but I believe that they made a conscious effort to go back to a heavier sound, and I think that it can be heard within every track of their new album. Even 'Red and Black' and 'Drifting in a Dream' manage to have some serious weight and punch in their sound when compared to Palo's heaviest songs.

Really happy you have released this video, as I'm the guy who promotes Kalmah in our 200-300 pers. metalhead community since at least 2011, and usually no one cares about. 😂 I guess they remained underrated due to having released just a single album in every 5 years since the social media boom, and "rival" bands like Insomnium get big media coverage. On a more serious note, my list would look totally different though. When Palo came out, I was waiting for too long for a new Kalmah release, and I was a bit disappointed. I have tried too many times to love that record since then, and after a point, I started to totally dislike it 😅 However I'm loving the new album, so everything is fine again :D

@@MetalTrenches I'm from Eastern Europe, and Insomnium are quite big in this zone. Sadly Mors Principium Est is not known at all :( we had them playing at the biggest metal festival in Romania for at least 2 times, and still no one really knows them from apart a small fanbase. But Kalmah was in the same pot 10 years ago. I remember I wrote an album review for a small webzine after Seventh Swamphony came out, and beside the small fanbase, the people didn't really knew them, and we are not that far away from Finland and the Scandinavian scene either. Hopefully it will change. For example Omnium Gatherum started to get a bit hyped, they toured last year opening for Fleshgod Apocalypse, in front of quite big audiences. :)

Yes, Kalmah didn't released a bad album. Therefore the preference of an album is purely subjective. Yes on their first records there were some similarities in the sound with Children of Bodom, but the content of their songs is thematically broader and constructive as that of Children of Bodom. For example the songs are about live and survive in nature and therefore their positioning against environmental destruction, but also about social issues like rejection of the consumer society or against bigotry on their last albums they are turn more towards original christianity. My view of the development of their sound is, that it became more independent and qualitatively better over the years.

I'm glad lots of people are liking the new album. For myself though, I think it's one of their weakest if not the weakest. There are tons of moments on the album I swear I heard before and the melodies just aren't as memorable as normal. On top of that I think the production is their worst ever - kinda muddy and jumbled. The drums especially sound bad. I'd give it a 7 at most. Which is good most of the time, but very low for a band like Kalmah.

What? Bro? Are you high? Pasi Hitula and Marco Shrek were better composers than Janne Wirman ever was. Wirman's claim to fame is that he can play incredibly fast. Most of the stuff he played was composed by Alexi. Look up "Warman" if you want to see his "true talent" because it's all classical music but in a metal style. Kalmah's keys are mush deeper, darker and melodic without all the classical undertones.

@@Charles_Anthony I may have been high when I was writing the comment, fuck knows...but I'm entitled to my preference and taste in any given state of mind, aren't I? And my preference is the Gothenburg sound, more reliance on guitars/vocals, more groove...

"Good tier".... Yeah, you did that just to piss off your viewers and get them to comment... I get that it was a pretty large shift due to Pasi Hitula's departure but this ain't 2006 anymore. It's pretty much universally accepted that For The Revolution and 12 Guage are the weaker albums, but I personally love 12 Guage so I don't subscribe to that line of thought. With all of that said, I personally think Seventh Swamphany was the biggest shift in tone because the new keyboardist... I can never remember this guy's name despite meeting him, but he originally played in some death techno style band back in the 2000s. He is a good keyboardist and the stuff he did for that one Russian black metal band (Vintergata which kicks ass) is definitely what made the boys in Kalmah recruit him, but even after almost a decade of him... I'm still not used to his keys...

Any analysis of the last two albums that doesn't mention the terrible production quality should be disregarded. The compositions are good but they just sound atrocious

@@MetalTrenches Dude, c'mon... Have you heard the cymbals on this new record? The snare? The way the lead guitar is buried? There's no proper amalgamation, no depth, no dynamics, nothing, it's unexcusable

Yeah, I can listen to Palo all day on headphones, but pop that CD in your car or in a stereo system and it's a mess. The new album is just as bad when it comes to the mix... I love Kalmah, spent like $200 bucks at their merch table and met the guys; they're amazingly humble and don't talk much but whoever is mixing their music (the last two albums) is destroying what they've created. I never thought I'd say this, but I hope Palo and the new album get a remastered version before I die because this is unacceptable.

@@Charles_Anthony Well said; what pisses me off even more is how barely anyone seems to be complaining on their social media pages or even the reviews, the complacency is frankly grotesque. They have to be made aware of the problem, this has to stop.

@@adamagedone: They started touring doing world tours so I'll definitely let them know the next time they come to the states. I was the typical "fanboy" when I last met them saying stuff like "I've listened to you guys for 20 years and you guys are my favorite band." They appreciated the praise but it was probably the hundredth time they heard that type of thing that night.

Lavrentiy Pavlovich Beria (ˈbɛriə") is very mad at you, tovarisch, for mispronouncing his surname. You get -1000 points of social rating and a one way ticket to GULAG. Just joking, f*ck him and his "heritage". Kalmah is sooooo great. Principle Hero is probably my favourite melodeath song of all time.
