Upon repeated request, here are the lyrics: it is a love song about Cisanse who walks so gracefully. "Going to draw water, the two of us, going into the fields, the two of us, going to collect firewood, the two of us, going down to the river to fish, the two of us, going to look after the animals, the two of us, Cisanse is the name of the beloved, let me look at your legs, let me look at your teeth, walk in front so I can see your beautiful legs."

This was played by young men when they want to get married. They go to the house of the woman they want to marry and play this outside long into the night as a sign of how dedicated they are.
@CMBaird4 жыл бұрын
@@bibty1000 This is not completely correct. Yes kalumbu was traditionally played at night by young men to communicate that they were ready for marriage, and indeed often all night - but not at the house of a certain young lady, as that would have been seen as disrespectful. The result of this night-time kalumbu playing was of course that the news was out in the community that the player wanted to get married.

@XEREBRLTo be frankly honest, I'm not sure about other cultures/places in Africa or even other tribes within Zambia 🤣🤷🏾♀️. What I do know is that within Tonga culture and it's sister tribes, there is/was a heavy emphasis on ancestral worship. You will find a similar theme in the various Zambian tribes and others of a Bantu extract in East and Southern Africa. You'd probably find a similar trend in other people groups across the continent. There might be differences in the mode of worship or ancestral veneration, but it's essentially the same idea. Generally speaking, I would say that Bantus don't have the pantheon of gods that you'd find in West African tribes and cultures i.e in Yoruba, Igbo, other West African tribes.

It's not quite the same as a berimbau. Notice how close it's strung to the wood and how he pulls the string in with his finger instead of pushing out using the stone. That and the gourd is hiked way up and there's substantially less curvature, letting him play on both ends of the wire without sacrificing sound. A very interesting instrument.

We have many landmarks that show and depict the evils of Slave trade all over Zambia. Eugene Mbanacele you won't find the origin in only one african country, the truth is that is and middle african instrument from angola, zambia, even south africa etc. in angolan tribes they call this axact same instrument "hungu" or "mbolu mbumba" in mozambique the call it "chitende". why is it that these countries have so much in common that is because middle africans and a part of southern africa are actualy one big tribe who seperated after long years, the 'bantu people'

King Neto, you're right that musical bows are widespread, both geographically and culturally, but these instruments, in various forms, were being played by the San & Khoi peoples, the earliest known inhabitants of southern Africa, long before the Bantu migrations and European slavery expiditions. You can add "Gom Gom" to your list of names, as it was known in the Cape when the first European colonists arrived.
@mayorjoshua2 жыл бұрын
@@jonwhidden The m'bulumbumba is an Angolan instrument that is obviously related to this kalumbu and the Afro-Brazilian berimbau. I believe that King Neto is correct saying these struck musical bowls with gourd resonator, not just simple musical bows, were widespread among Bantu peoples. Given than Angola is one of the major sources of Afro-Brazilian ancestors, and Capoeira is rooted in Angolan ngolo fighting, it is more likely that the ancestor of the Berimbau came via Central Africa not Southern Africa, where (specifically the Southeast) very few enslaved people came from

So I googled this. This is a bow (as in the weapon, not like a violin bow) with a single metal string that is played by his stick. It is lashed onto a calabash which is that round fruit, which acts as a resonating chamber (amplifies the vibrations made in the string). He can also manipulate the resonance by moving the calabash into or away from his belly, which is why his shirt is pulled up part way. This has that kind of low pass filter, dynamic wompy almost vocal timbre if you listen closely. Incredibly cool instrument! What I don’t really understand is how that the pitch increases the higher up on the string he plays. I would’ve thought that the pitch would be uniform along the whole string, or at least the closer to the centre of the string, the larger the wavelength and therefore lower the pitch.I wonder if I could try to recreate it with more common materials…
