All you need is a mouth guard ladies and gentlemen. Head gear only needed when ears are hurt and/or healing.

I have braces so I wear a mouthguard to protect me and my partners

Awesome advice, thank you for your wisdom about how to train & prepare for self defense! I often wondered the same question not understanding the true reasons for using/ not using protective gear.

I only use a groin protector because of aggressive guard passers and I'm VERY BLESSED!lol

I went through the same evolution wearing a cup and mouth piece. I wore headgear after I got my first hematoma on my ear because it hurt to keep rolling with it. Once it cleared up I stopped.

This is a dope video. Very important to know the pros and cons of gear. 🙏🙏 I stop wearing a cup and head gear a few back because I wanted to train, like if I was outside somewhere. Plus, whenever we'd spar, I felt the head gear made it difficult for me to focus clearly.

So, then we should fold up the mats, right?
@KamaJiuJitsu6 жыл бұрын
land on the plywood? we can try that before we try concrete.

Mats are protective gear. Just sayin,

we can try... back in HI before Relson arrived, it wasn't uncommon for us to train on the concrete outside the training facility... we can make it as hardcore as the students want.

Kama Jiu-Jitsu I think you’d have to charge more for the experience of eating asphalt.

So should we train with shoes on or just take them off in a street fight? I can see where your shoes could get in the way of some techniques.

I guess we can then take it to training on asphalt or concrete. In the snow. With snowplows driving by. While being mobbed by drunks outside a club.

Hi Ryan. Great videos. Sorry for slightly off topic question, but I was always wondering how do you spar with self defence stuff? Do you for example have one guy just attacking and the other just defending? Or do you just go life say 50% rather than 100%? Cheers Adam

Let me work on a video for that. Oh, wait, that’ll end up on Dave Kama’s Patreon channel. But yes, one guy is the attacker.

Do you mean www.patreon.com/kamajiujitsu page? If so, would this video available from a specific tier?
@KamaJiuJitsu6 жыл бұрын
yes, that's it. something like that (teaching KJJ) ends up in the "Black Belt" tier. Brown Belt tier typically has the techniques.

Can't imagine not wearing a cup.

I don't think I will ever agree to the no cup thing( unless they are training for a specific competition practicing armbars and such). Wearing the mouth guard, however, does not hurt or introduce bad habits. I personally don't wear a mouth guard for bjj, but wears one for MMA or with new soppy people in bjj on rare occasions. Nevertheless, my point is that wearing a mouth guard really give disadvantages. Your argument about headgear is really good and thought out though.

I've always wondered about using gloves and headgear for some of the standup self defense. Maybe punch about 50% to make the counter as real and sharp as possible. What do you think?

an attacker is also not going to be barefoot.

Bjj is an extremely effective artform and this channel is great. I'm just addressing the critique that traiing must always be as real as possible. even bjj takes safety precautions otherwise we'd be dead (mattresses, barefoot, no weapons etc). In my opinion moutguards and head gear will prevent ringwork and calliflower ear. i noticed you dont have calliflower which is a miracle. many would get it and its ugly. wrestlers still know how to wrestle without headgear should the sitation arises. great channel.

I have braces on both top and bottom teeth. Not wearing a mouth guard would just be plain dumb. It's very easy to get cuts inside the mouth or lips. Funny enough... I used to have a teacher that told me the mouth guard was not necessary... yet all of this other older students that also had braces used it and privatelly told me I should DEFINATELY use it.

After months of lurking, I am preparing to go for my first BJJ class, but I don't want to get cauliflower ear as a result. Also, BJJ would not be my primary sport, so I don't want to damage my knees or fingers. As for hockey, yes, it is a collision sport, but targeting the head for a check is illegal. The helmet is to protect against slappers to the dome, sticks upside the head, and banging the head on ice, in the net, on the boards, or on other heads!

You can get headgear if you're truly worried about cauliflower ear. But it will get the shit yanked out of it every single time.
@KamaJiuJitsu5 жыл бұрын
I wore a headgear for the first 10 of my 30 years in Jiu-jitsu. I contend that while headgear does protect the ears (IF they can stay on right. you want the soft plastic ones and not the ones with foam rubber covering a hard “cup.”), it didn’t allow my ears to “toughen” up some. So when my headgear did shift (exposing some part of my ear while training), it made it so me ears couldn’t withstand even a tiny rub without becoming inflamed.
@KamaJiuJitsu5 жыл бұрын
As far as how long it takes to get it, it depends on you as an individual. I’ve seen some get it in the first 30 days, and some never get it (IIRC, Relson, Rorion, and Royce don’t have it, while RICKSON did have it).

I would suggest gears for beginners, because white belts have more injuries than others. Of course everybody do what they want and some people are really hardcore and likes almost no protection, like you maybe 😀

BJJ students should embrace cauliflower ears. People who see it will think you are a badass and leave you alone!
