Actor-politician Kamal Haasan said there was no concept of Hinduism in Raja Raja Cholan’s time. He was responding to a question on filmmaker Vetrimaran’s statement that many identities are being erased in cinema, pointing to Thiruvallur’s saffron robes and Raja Raja Cholan being depicted as a Hindu king.

The name Hinduism was not in raja Raja chola time. The name Hindu was given by British due to sindu river. During the cholas period, they had changed many vaishnavas, Jains and Buddhist into shaivars because they believed that any one of religions will dismantle the shaivism. So that's why in Tamil Nadu, still Shaivisim is very strong. It just like different sect of a religion.
