Yea, they have tried to make guns one of their things. The fact is it's been an American thing regardless of party. The only reason the right claims it so vienimently is because the NRA and other major associations give them money to tote unrestrained ownership for sales and the right takes the money and runs with it. This isn't a secret. It's been going on for decades now. I am in my 50s now and my family mostly leaned left. I grew up around guns and responsible ownership of them such as regular training and license upkeep. My dad kept them locked up and was very watchful of us whenever we went target practicing. I wouldn't consider myself a Democrat specifically, more a moderately left leaning independent, but have seen more honest responsibility on the left by far when it comes to this topic.

I believe - I am not positive this is factual, but it makes sense to me - that the gun control movement was started specifically to take guns out of black hands. now obviously it's grown beyond that since, but a) one of the instigations of the Tulsa Race Riot was a black militia forming to protect a recently incarcerated black man from a lynch mob - the sheriff lost his SHIT and officially deputized the same very same lynch mob that was already forming and with official sanction they went WILD over the nearby black district of Greenwood. and b) there's the more recent example of the black panthers who panicked white law enforcement by exercising THEIR right to bear arms... you see where I'm going with this. now do I believe gun control is necessary? absolutely yes. the second amendment was written when the only gun a citizen could get their hands on was a smoothbore musket who couldn't reliably hit a man standing fifty yards away. and even THEN the founders EXPLICITLY stated that gun ownership had to "well regulated". we no longer live in that world. and to imsist we do is crazy. but no one would have started THINKING about gun control if whites didn't start getting twitchy over blacks having the means to do onto others what had already been DONE unto them.

Until I left California in 2006, I had 37 guns, locked up in a safe. They included 2 on the ban list, that were "grandfathered" in. I reduced those down to 2, when I moved to Oregon. This isn’t a violation of the second amendment. The amendment does not preclude the government from banning a particular type of weapon. When the constitution was written the best soldiers of the era had single shot muzzle loaded rifles, that on your best day you could fire a single round a minute. I believe the founding fathers would look at the state of guns in our society today and be outraged at how the second amendment has been implemented and perverted by the NRA and the right wing judiciary.

Bare minimum, I think Americans should know how to use a gun. Guns are so prevalent; people should know how to check if it's loaded, know how to load and unload it, be familiar with the safety, how it feels to hold it, fire it, and of course: safe gun use 101. I recently came across a gun on a kitchen counter. I was at the home of an acquaintance and his wife, watching their kids while they attended to a family emergency. I'm not personally a gun owner, but I'm familiar with them. Basic knowledge meant I could unload it before locking it up. We don't have to be scared of guns. We have to be sensible about them.

Something is very different in the US versus my country Norway. We too have a lot of private arms, but next to no people killed by guns. How come? Most guns are bolt rifles or shot guns used for hunting. To obtain a rifle you have to prove yourself by attending coursing in hunting and gun handling. To obtain a one hand gun (pistol or revolver) strictly for sports at a shooting range, you have to prove yourself in a shooting club for more than one year and be endorsed by the club. When not in use, all guns and ammo are to be stored under lock and bolt in a armour safe. Guns are to be kept away from any child or unattended teen-ager. Under way from your house to hunting ground or shooting range, the gun must be stored unloaded in the trunk of your car. If you bring your gun down town, into the city, into a bar, you risk 5-7 yrs in prison! In shirt, you are allowed to have a gunn if you have a good reason and you myst keep it locked down.

No recession. Inflation back down to healthy numbers through investment in America. Record Stock market. No boots on the ground in any wars. Harris continuing the Biden presidency works for me. I'm extremely liberal and own about 100 guns, own a private 800 yard range on my farm, shoot at least 250 days a year, and I hunt. Why's it so hard for folks to imagine an American that owns guns and is liberal? I can understand not having firearms beyond home defense if you're a city slicker; but USA is 3.1 million square miles and I bet at least 90% of that land is rural.

Harris was a prosecutor, dealing with drug dealers etc. She needed to have protection within her home for her safety. So what's the problem? Nobodies mentioned that Trump also owned a firearm? It's not like she leaves home carrying a weapon. She has it for home protection. Which is what the 2nd Ammendment us all about. She has used it on a proper gun range. She doesn't go out into the hills shooting up everything that moves. As a weapons Instructor for over 20 years? I would be surprised if, because of her work, she didn't have a weapon. I've been around DA's and judges that also owned weapons. They are responsible gun owners. I've had to run ranges for some real idiots that should never have been allowed to own a sling shot let alone a deadly weapon.

I lean left and I own firearms. I also have pistol safes trigger locks and locked ammo boxes. I do teach my older kids firearm safety and hunt with them. My oldest will deer hunt this year. That being said, I do not agree with most gun nuts. Assault rifles should be highly restricted and regulated to only those who actully need them. (Private security, military, police, etc.)

New Mexico is a True Blue State and is known for cowboys and vaqueros and has a rich history of outlaws like Pancho Villa and Billy the Kid. NM has LOTS of gun owners. I remember high school back in the 70s when rifles were stored on gun racks of student's pickup trucks in school parking lots

I would own a gun if I needed, but a basic shotgun for home defense, or even a handgun. In a gun safe of course. When I lived in Sweden my cousins owned and competed with hand guns. My uncles owned rifles for hunting. It is very common place in Sweden. But you have to register and train. And have to store it safely.

If your job was to put people in prison you need to have a gun for defense against criminals that have been released or are going through the judicial process. Most law enforcement officials have concealed carry permits and they need it to defend themselves. Most lawyers, prosecutors, judges prison guards all have concealed carry permits because they all deal with criminals on a regular basis.
