After a disastrous first two years and loosing all bees and comb. I decided to get back into it on the cheep after a two year break. I caught two swarms in traps and they are doing great. I recommended your page to lots of people because of your knowledge and excellent videos that are very helpful. The day I moved the first capture to a 10 frame deep in another location I caught another swarm in the same spot with in 30 minutes. The best part is it was only 20 feet from my front door.

Good video, Kamon. This is something I will use often. I don’t have a lot of room in my home yard and being able to increase vertically will be a big help, I have had an amazing year for increase between splits and especially from catching swarms. I’ve gone from only three survivor colonies to 18, which really has me hopping to keep up. I am out of bottom boards, lids, and slatted racks, so when I am not running between bee yards I am in the shop building. Today I used my last assembled frames and need 60 right now, so there will be some late nights in the shop. I am semi-retired and until now have always thought of myself as a software engineer or engineering manager. Now I refer to myself as a beekeeper who works on the side.. I have said it before - I am very fortunate to have you and a couple of other KZbin beekeepers (are you listening, Joe May?) whose experience is useful on a daily basis as I strive to keep up in skill with all of this growth. I captured a swarm this evening that comprised over two gallons of bees, had to downgrade a weaker colony to a nuc to have a place to put them. Stu

Double screen boards are a great tool if your double deep hive swarms. Split the boxes, put the double screen board in between and you increase the odds of getting a mated queen back. If one doesn't come back you just combine and you still have your double deep and if both queens come back mated you've now got two colonies.

For ader stuff i take of one screen.. like brood breaks, so the bees don't start queen cells.. Ther is more, but it is on you to film it.. I cood write a very bad spelled book about it.. the double screen name is not good.

If you decide to re-introduce the bottom or top hive due to queen failure do you still need to use newspaper or do the bees readily accept being mixed with the other box? and if you had two queens for awhile and one dies and you re-introduce....same question. I assume as they have both have different queen pheromones' that they would need newspaper.

Hey Kamon, how are you? I have a question for you about package. Say I ordered a package of bees WITHOUT A QUEEN, and when they arrived, shake them into my hive with a very small tab of lemongrass oil. Would they stay in the box without a queen for a couple days? I ask this because I'm planning on getting my queen from a company that does not sell packages? So I want to save money on a package and then introduce the queen. I know this is an awkward scenario, but was wondering if it would work? Thank you for your feedback.

Hello Kamon, thanks for the great videos. Somewhat offtopic question. I noticed in one or more recent videos you have hung apivar strips in your hive(s). Does this mean you are done harvesting honey for the year, from those specific hives? I'm in southeastern Michigan, so I'm a month and a half behind you, spring arrival wise, so I haven't harvested any honey yet. For any given hive, should I take what I'm going to take, from that specific hive, before treating with apivar strips?

It works for brood breaks too. In summer. I put capt brood down and open on top, and work around thet.. in 3 manth with no flow i can do inaf with just 15% lactic acid and a spray botle. Varroa realy loves me..😂. So i don't use the smoker. The spray botle is my smoker in the summer. When varroa is out on the bees, no capt brood, ther is no need for chemical tretmants. If you have just 10 hives and all you need is honey for the family... We have hives thet are in the 5th year just OAV in novenber and a summer brood breke with lactic acid in a spray used as a smoker.. 1 thing is a problem. It's not inaf if your bothom bord is fool wood. Varroa needs to drop out ...

So I split my hive and two days later my new Hive made for Queen cells was that because they weren't happy with the queen and the hive and what do I do now because I do not want to split again. This is my first year and I only really planned on having one Hive for pollination wasn't doing it for anything else my hive is very healthy actually both hives are very healthy plenty of bees so I'm not sure what I should really do I also have plenty of honey but I don't want to harvest any this year because I live in Michigan I want to make sure they're going to have enough for winter.

Kamon & Laurel, great video and you put the icing in the middle of the cake! Laurel did a wonderful job painting up the board! On the Apivar strips, I thought I read not to use them if the weather is over 85 degrees. I’m I wrong with that or is it not getting over 85 there yet or are you fudging just a little?

Hey Don thanks! Apivar can be used at nearly any temp. Apiguard and formic are likely the 2 you are remembering

@@donbearden1953 Thanks for this Don / Kamon. I was going to ask the same question as I have new strips but I've never used them. Not pulling honey this year and have a mite or two on nurse bee pics.

Wow! Got to try a double screen board. Thanks for the great video. I noticed that you were using Apivar strips and I did not see ant dead bees. I hav been told by several bee keepers that they lost a lot of bees when they tried them. Do you do something different?

Apivar is very gentle on bees and brood. Perhaps they were talking about another treatment. If they were talking about apivar they don't know what they are talking about

It was my understanding using Apivar Strips for 42 days that it kills the Mites because of the duration on the hive and broods and hatch up to 99% kill rate... this being said it very well likely helps having a brood break... but, it is not required.... is this correct? This is in the instructions for use and discussions of this product...

Hey ECP it is not required to have a brood break BUT it does help it get a higher kill quicker.

Norfolk honeybee, so to calculate their foraging area you can use the formula for the area of a circle, which is: A = 3.1416 (mathmatical pie) x (radius)². Where the radius is 3kms, that gives a foraging area of over 28 square kms. Pretty amazing huh!
